The theme chosen and carried out through- out the banquet was Gay Paree . The tables were decorated attractively in keeping the theme. They were covered with light blue paper, centered with vases of beautiful flowers, and the favors were little French pipe-cleaner men clothed in smocks, pants, and berets, holding a little artist's paint brush along side of them. During the meal, we enjoyed a selection of records. All participants at the banquet received a corsage of carnations centered with rose buds, or a boutonniere . l Norman Huntrod Y Marlene Hall Larry Hall Dale Mericle Betty Lock Freshman Initiation On September l7, the sophomore class was privileged with the honor of taking over the five green freshmen. The freshies had to do as the sophomore's wished them to do. They each had to wear a costume that fitted their personality or something from outer space. Instead of having a party that night, the high school had a skating party at Skate- land in Ames. So on the night of September 23, l954, the high school, taking two buses, spent a rolling good time on skates. On the way home one bus of students stopped and ate at the Tip-Top in Ames and the other stopped at Nevada's West Cafe . When the freshmen arrived home that night they knew they were truly students of Fernald High School. 31
