Without the knowledge of her family, Mrs. Gilman had spent a number of months in writing, during her spare time, a book called The Art of Ruling Your Household --months of wishful thinking, no doubt. To her amazement, however, the book was accepted by an established pub- lishing firm. Mrs. Gilman became a national celebrity, rediscovered self-confidence, ana astounded all the members of her household--including the comical, outspoken maid, Lena. 28

The assembly was decorated with blue streamers running from the light to the walls with silver stars hanging down from them. Crepe paper covered the book- shelves with the word 'The Midnight Club attached to the crepe paper. After seeing the movie Call Northside 777 , we spent our time sitting in the candlelighted assembly at card tables eating, talking, and then later danc- ing to music from records. The refreshments consisted of all kinds of homemade candy, cookies, pop- corn, sandwiches, and punch. When midnight arrived, we brought the New Year in with the clanging of noisemakers and the throwing of tickertape. The chaperones for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Gabel. After doing a little cleaning up, we all went toward home. 27
