Class History H On September 4, 1940, fifteen little pupils'who were later to be- come known as the Fernald Class of 1953 began their search for know- ledge under the guidance of Miss Frances DeVries. This group consist- ed of Shirley Baker, Barbara Cawthon, Ray Couser, Elaine Crosby, Donna Rae Danielson, Dean Handsaker, Joie Heintz, Jeanette Hitchings, Iris Hobson, Gay Huhn, Kay Huhn, Robert Peterson, Charles Riley, Helen Irene Shull, and Florence Watt. Later in the year we were join- ed by Carroll Dunahoo. Miss DeVries returned to give us. our first grade education. We had gained one new member, Jerry Springer, but had lost two of our primary classmates, Florence Watt and Iris Hobson. We began the second grade under the instruction of Mrs. Betty Sorenson. After the death of her husband she was replaced by Mrs. Santee. Jerry Springer's stay with us was very brief for he moved away as did Carroll Dunahoo. Despite this, our class increased in size with the addition of Helen Wheelock, Viola Borton, Albert Borton, and Lavaughn Gull. . Long division, geography, and other fascinating UQ skills were introduced to us, as third graders, by Miss Pearl Picht. It was also during this year that we acquired two girls who were to be permanent members of our class--Janet McBride and Evelyn Jarboe. Marilyn Griffith also joined us, but five of last year's members were not on hand to answer roll call this year: Shirley Baker, Jeannette Hitchings, Robert Peterson, Albert Borton, and Lavaughn Gull. Viola Borton al- - so left during the year. , At last we were climbing the stairs to the fourth grade room and our new teacher, Mrs. Lela Caskey. The clirnb was evidently too much for Marilyn Griffith for she was no longer with us. Irene Shull left us in March, leaving our enrollment at twelve. Our class now in- cluded Barbara Cawthon, Ray Couser, Elaine Crosby, Donna Danielson, Dean Handsaker, Joie Heintz, Gay Huhn, Kay Huhn, Evelyn Jarboe, Janet McBride, Charles Riley, a-nd Helen Wheelock. Mrs. Louise Foote was our teacher during the fifth grade. With the loss of Joie Heintz. and Charles Riley, our class had reached its smallest enrollment, ten members. With the removal of prinnary from the Fernald School system, we returned to the same room for our sixth grade education. We don't know what Mrs. Foote's sentiments were upon learning this arrange- ment, but we were happy to have her as our teacher another year. Our membership was increased to twelve with the arrival of Carole Swartz and Margaret Miller. .
