PETER O’KEEFE FRANK PECH PELLECRINO REVFRUZZI Every experience offered at Fermi High mirrors these educational goals and prepares students for graduation into the real world; today, a much more demanding world than yesterday. Therefore, a student’s responsibility in terms of his her education is also much more challenging. Students must work with the school system by assimilating knowledge, interacting with ideas, developing the self — intellectually, physically, and morally, and by actively participating in determining the meaning and direction of his her education. Parents and students must cooperatively work with teachers and administrators to ensure our schools reflect our society. Education must be relevant and dynamic; a continuous experience involving not only the school, but the individual and the community at large. Then, and only then, will students be able to deal with the constantly changing world. The learning situation offered by Fermi epitomizes those of the work world. This microco sm of skills, knowledge, and “on-the-job-training” will inevitably give students an edge on the future. Education, for those who are its recipients, can only increase the realm of possibility and it can only encourage success in the real world! 5

According to Webster’s Dictionary a microcosm (mi’-kre-koz ’m) is a little world, a miniature universe. Fermi High School is a microcosm of what is often called the ‘‘real world.” The educational goal of Fermi, as with any school, is to present a learning environment to help its students develop practical skills, attitudes, and an understanding of the world. In order to be effective in a life’s work, comprehensibly, each student must become a self-directed person capable of achieving personal goals while also serving the good of society. 4

“Wait until you get into the real world.” We ' ve heard this many times from our elders. If high school isn’t the real world, then what is it? As students in high school, we are in essence actors rehearsing a script. What is the theme of this production? Does life in high school not represent the ‘‘real’ ' world? We believe it does. This yearbook hopes to present a picture of what is real about this production called “high school and how our efforts here are but a reflection of life itself: the real world! Our high school career can be compared to a movie performance. The plot is what we do and how we go about doing it to accomplish the theme. The theme is education. During a four year high school education, each student plays many roles and each has a moment in the spotlight, whether it be academically, athletically, or socially. In high school, students are given the opportunity to discover their special talents and abilities. “The same man cannot be skilled in everything, each has his special excellence.” High school provides this time of experimentation on the stage — this time of rehearsal. The first act of the drama encompasses the academics. Incorporated in our script is a varied company of people.
