DEDICATION “To give life a meaning, one must have a purpose larger than oneself.” A Standing Ovation We, the members of the class of 1985, would like to dedicate this yearbook to a well deserving member of the faculty, Miss Patricia Harkins. Before coming to Fermi in 1980, Miss Harkins taught mathematics at John F. Kennedy Junior High School. Presently she teaches Analysis, Computers, and Geometry here at Fermi. Miss Harkins takes her job in earnest and surpasses her occupational duties. She willingly tutors students and offers extra help to those who need it. She is very dedicated and gives a great deal of support to her students. As it is said, “It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked through understanding.” Miss Harkins exemplifies this philosophy. She respects her students and is cognizant of their needs. As Emerson once said, “The secret of education lies in respecting the pupil.” In addition to teaching, Miss Harkins was the 1982 Class Advisor. She is involved with the coaching of the school’s softball team, and is an advisor to our chapter of the National Honor Society. Through her knowledge and the understanding of mathematics, Miss Harkins plays a major role in the preparation students receive for the “real world.” The study of mathematics is important to the future and it will open many doors to various careers, including the expanding field of computers. The computer has and will c ontinue to have a significant effect upon our lives. Students adequately prepared in the area of mathematics are well armed for a future in the “real world.” Miss Harkins, we, the class of 1985, would like to thank you and to applaud you with a “standing ovation.” 2
