DEDICATION “To give life a meaning, one must have a purpose larger than oneself.” A Standing Ovation We, the members of the class of 1985, would like to dedicate this yearbook to a well deserving member of the faculty, Miss Patricia Harkins. Before coming to Fermi in 1980, Miss Harkins taught mathematics at John F. Kennedy Junior High School. Presently she teaches Analysis, Computers, and Geometry here at Fermi. Miss Harkins takes her job in earnest and surpasses her occupational duties. She willingly tutors students and offers extra help to those who need it. She is very dedicated and gives a great deal of support to her students. As it is said, “It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked through understanding.” Miss Harkins exemplifies this philosophy. She respects her students and is cognizant of their needs. As Emerson once said, “The secret of education lies in respecting the pupil.” In addition to teaching, Miss Harkins was the 1982 Class Advisor. She is involved with the coaching of the school’s softball team, and is an advisor to our chapter of the National Honor Society. Through her knowledge and the understanding of mathematics, Miss Harkins plays a major role in the preparation students receive for the “real world.” The study of mathematics is important to the future and it will open many doors to various careers, including the expanding field of computers. The computer has and will c ontinue to have a significant effect upon our lives. Students adequately prepared in the area of mathematics are well armed for a future in the “real world.” Miss Harkins, we, the class of 1985, would like to thank you and to applaud you with a “standing ovation.” 2 The Directors Page 17 The Cast Page 49 Academy Award Winners Page 86 The Crew Page 97 Places Everyone Page 135 Supporting Cast Page 167 Box Office Hits Page 176 Patrons Page 184 - m CO IV) 00 J3 Ul O r C ) c n 3 According to Webster’s Dictionary a microcosm (mi’-kre-koz ’m) is a little world, a miniature universe. Fermi High School is a microcosm of what is often called the ‘‘real world.” The educational goal of Fermi, as with any school, is to present a learning environment to help its students develop practical skills, attitudes, and an understanding of the world. In order to be effective in a life’s work, comprehensibly, each student must become a self-directed person capable of achieving personal goals while also serving the good of society. 4 MAURICE F. SECRETARY ANDIER L. ALEXANDER JOHN i. CARNEY CHARLES N. FOWLER JOHN W. MURRAY, JR. 0. PETER O’KEEFE FRANK PECH PELLECRINO REVFRUZZI Every experience offered at Fermi High mirrors these educational goals and prepares students for graduation into the real world; today, a much more demanding world than yesterday. Therefore, a student’s responsibility in terms of his her education is also much more challenging. Students must work with the school system by assimilating knowledge, interacting with ideas, developing the self — intellectually, physically, and morally, and by actively participating in determining the meaning and direction of his her education. Parents and students must cooperatively work with teachers and administrators to ensure our schools reflect our society. Education must be relevant and dynamic; a continuous experience involving not only the school, but the individual and the community at large. Then, and only then, will students be able to deal with the constantly changing world. The learning situation offered by Fermi epitomizes those of the work world. This microco sm of skills, knowledge, and “on-the-job-training” will inevitably give students an edge on the future. Education, for those who are its recipients, can only increase the realm of possibility and it can only encourage success in the real world! 5 “Wait until you get into the real world.” We ' ve heard this many times from our elders. If high school isn’t the real world, then what is it? As students in high school, we are in essence actors rehearsing a script. What is the theme of this production? Does life in high school not represent the ‘‘real’ ' world? We believe it does. This yearbook hopes to present a picture of what is real about this production called “high school and how our efforts here are but a reflection of life itself: the real world! Our high school career can be compared to a movie performance. The plot is what we do and how we go about doing it to accomplish the theme. The theme is education. During a four year high school education, each student plays many roles and each has a moment in the spotlight, whether it be academically, athletically, or socially. In high school, students are given the opportunity to discover their special talents and abilities. “The same man cannot be skilled in everything, each has his special excellence.” High school provides this time of experimentation on the stage — this time of rehearsal. The first act of the drama encompasses the academics. Incorporated in our script is a varied company of people. The administrators are the producers. They assure that the curriculum meets the educational needs of the actors. They keep everything going according to schedule. Along the way they offer advice as to how a complete and refined product can be achieved. The directors, our teachers, guide the actors according to the script. They provide us with encouragement and demand that we focus on our curtain call to the “real world” — graduation. 7 In the classroom, our teachers offer us opportunities to develop our “real world” knowledge. Our roles as students are diverse. We may be asked to work as a group; sharpening our listening skills and our abilities to cooperate and verbalize with each other as human beings with a common goal. We may be required to play the role of leader when initiating a class discussion or we may be called upon to work in small or large groups, in pairs or as individuals. A history class demands the use of our communication skills to take notes on a lecture and to participate in a discussion of the material. Our abilities to give directions to others and to cooperate as a team may be drawn upon while working on a science lab. We might gain experience as a leader initiating a class debate with a statement we’ve prepared. In English class our thoughts must be communicated on paper in an essay or report. No matter what the acting role we play, the classroom situation, through practice, fine tunes the necessary “real world” skills. The more roles rehearsed now will eventually be beneficial to us in the future when we enter college or the working world. The second act of this production called high school encompasses, for most students, the varied clubs, activities, and sports offered at Enrico Fermi High School. Each role played, be it a class officer, a team member or captain, a fundraiser, or a group leader, adds to our sense of responsibility and to our knowledge of the word commitment. In order for any group or team to be successful, each member must learn to rely on others and vice versa. Dedication to a job well done - the production of a literary magazine, a winning football season, a well run ski trip, or a smooth flowing rendition of a new song in band, requires each member to do his or her part. 9 Sometimes this means playing the role of leader; sometimes this also means submitting to the role of follower and learning to take directions from another with good grace. In accepting a challenge, we become a thinker and a problem solver. These are all real world skills. At other times, clubs, activities, and sports merely provide students entertainment and friendships. They offer a place to perfect a talent or to develop a new skill. In any case, our experiences enable us to acquire a sense of satisfaction at a ‘‘job well done” or to learn from an experience that was not as successful as we would like. This is a “real world” skill, too. We must learn to celebrate our wins and to accept defeats equally. As adults, the “real world” demands that our talents be thus varied! It is soon learned that the only way to triumph is by working as a unit. Not only does school foster the development of academics and activities, it also provides situations for social skills to be broadened. This is the third act of the production called high school. Learning to be a friend and how to have friends are two very important aspects of life. Learning to deal effectively with others is also a necessity. Schools nourish student’s growth in dealing with people of all ages. Sharing good times with friends at school dances, Homecoming Parades, Pep Rallies and at lunchtime are social learning situations. From these school experiences we learn to more effectively communiate in the real world. The reward for accomplishing all of our challenges, meeting our responsibilities, and finishing our work is our high school diploma. To students, the diploma is a symbol. It is the ticket out of our “real world”, into the actual real world! It is a symbol of joining the ranks of free adults; free in that we stop practicing our skills and begin applying them. 1. Mager The Producer In the real world . . . “You will be expected to demonstrate higher levels of reading, writing, and speaking . . . you will also need the ability to communicate across cultures, to be a world citizen and to manage your lives better.” You have now reached the threshold of beginning life in the real, real world. It’s exciting! It’s a bit scary. You’re alive with anticipation! You’re going to miss Fermi High, with all it means in terms of learning, and friends. But take the plunge you must, like all those seniors before you, and build a vision of the future. The real world is in a constant state of change. Right now it is undergoing a veritable upheavel. We have, almost overnight, changed from an in- dustrial society to the technological informational society. By 1990 only 10% of the available occupations will be blue collar. Jobs in the information service area now make up 65 to 70% of the total workforce. You will be expected to demonstrate higher levels of reading, writing and speaking; vocabulary and conceptual understandings; math, science and technologies; and higher order skills to apply knowledge. You will also need the ability to communicate across cultures, to be a world citizen and to manage your lives better. In most cases this means more training and education. Imagine, all of the above and live happily ever after” too. It won’t be easy, but we, your parents, your teachers, your administrators, have faith in you. With the skills, talents, enthusiasm and ambi- tion you bring to the task, we know you’ll make it. Welcome ... to the real, real world! Mario A. Gentile Principal 19 Housemasters Mr. Seymour Schonberger Education is ... a natural fruit of labor, a product of intense activity of man, acquired through his energetic determination to ensure and develop with his own strength his own existence, and to create for himself and his own an existence of just freedom, not only economic, but also political, cultural and religious. 20 Mr. Raymond Marr Mr. Stephen Ross Secretaries Blue House: Mrs. Polly Brown Red House: Mrs. Rosemond McIntosh Main Office: Mrs. Lillian Schultess Green House: Mrs. Mary Landry Physical Education Mr. Robert Lengyel Miss Rosemary Sullivan Mr. Joseph Nuccio Student Teacher: Miss Karolyn Welsh Miss Kathleen Carbone “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life.” Food Service: Student Teacher Stewart Martinez and Mrs. Elizabeth Nicholls Distributive Education: Mr. Gerald Boucher Automotives: Mr. Richard Chapman Driver’s Education: Mr. John Lyons 23 Special Education The Special Education Department at Enrico Fermi High School provides identified students with direct and indirect special educational services. But the skills taught in the English classroom are not tucked away with other memorabilia. Letters of application to prospective employers must be written. Speaking out at town meetings on vital issues becomes necessary to protect the community. Sales presentations, directions given to those in one’s employ, and the infrequent but important call to jury duty all require the ability to think logically, to speak clearly, to listen carefully, and to write precisely. Success, and perhaps even survival, in an ever-changing world will be determined by the degree to which we master the essential skills of communication. It is the visual history that transcends all language barriers, cultural limitations, race and nationalities. The relevancy of art education in preparing the student for the real world lies in the fact of providing the individual with direction and creativity. A public that engineers high technology without also developing the moral and responsible sensitivities of the creators within the society reflect an absence of intelligence. The restoration of the concept of the “whole person’’ is a critical cause for art education. The long hours of practice and continuous team work have earned the squad the recognition and respect of the school and other cheerleading squads. The squad, consisting of eight seniors, two juniors and two sophomores has been practicing together since March of last year and their comradery is evident and has paid off. Beginning at an International Cheerleading Foundation camp last summer, the girls commenced a season of victories. They won every ribbon, including those for spirit, skill, teamwork and overall excellence. In the dance competition they also earned the top honors of first place. Their stay at camp ended with a bang when they defeated the other squads and won the Grand Champion trophy. They went on to compile a scrapbook, including snapshots, nicknames, sayings, and answers to questions supplied that ranked them the I.C.F.D. thirteenth best cheerleading squad in the nation! Now put that new school in a different country, and it makes the situation even more terrifying. Leaving your family and friends behind to venture into a totally new p lace can be a daring experience. With a new family, new friends, a different culture and new social rules, it takes a very special person to overcome the obstacles of being a Foreign Exchange Student. Here at Fermi, we have six of these very special people. This handful of bright, outgoing students came to Enfield to learn more about America from Finland, Japan, Brazil, El Salvador, Denmark and Switzerland. It is here that these six students can broaden their educational horizons. Not only does Fermi offer them a different education, it also offers them a view of American, political, and social customs. Congratulations to Riitta, Mariko, Marcelo, Carlos, Lisa, and August. You have accomplished a great deal in one short year! Marcelo Marinis 139 Yearbook The Staff: First Row: Darcy Russotto, Noelle Wojciehowski, Lisa White, Kathy Ciolkos, Anne Marie Stroiney. Second Row: Pat Moriarty, Marc Levine. You know you’re in trouble when the whole Yearbook Staff fits in your car!! Advisor: Miss Monica de Haan Co-editor: Darcy Russotto Co-editor: Anne Marie Stroiney - “We the willing led by the unknowing are doing the impossible for the ungrateful! We have done so much for so long with so little. We are now qualified to do anything with nothing.” This quote typifies the 1984-85 Yearbook Staff — all six of them! The Staff consisted of six members from an original thirteen. We were will- ing to persevere, with little outside help, throughout the year. The time between deadlines seemed to slip out of our reach. Working in such belittled conditions has made us “qualified.” “You know you’re in trouble when the whole Yearbook Staff fits in your car. Keeping your sense of humor after entering Seminar 33 seventh period was toug!i. Tensions ran high. It was im- portant to remember to keep tensions in the room. Throughout the year, we became a close nucleus with a definite direction. We are proud to say, “We went the distance alone.” “The Dirty Half Dozen 1. Watch out Anne Marie Stroiney, the Yearbook camera will get you even in the privacy of your own home. 2. Yearbook pressures are easily handled by Noelle Wojciehowski. ■3. We missed our deadline, again? asks Noelle Wojciehowski. 142 The 1984-85 Yearbook Staff would like to express a special thanks to a few very helpful people. We would like to thank Vicki Wallace; whose excellence in word processing was of extreme value to us. Also, our appreciation to Marijean Panella for helping out with captions during seventh period. For all their time and dedication, we would like to thank the Greniers. Their expertise in the art of photography was helpful. To our publishing representative, Denny Galvin, our greatest appreciation. His helpful tips and suggestions were put to good use. Most of all, we thank Ms. Monica de Haan. With her help and direction we were able to pull this yearbook out. Though it is the last yearbook under the guidance of Ms. de Haan, it certainly was successful! 143 Future Business Leaders of America Officers: Diane Badger, President; Lara Levinthal, Vice President; Marijean Panella, Treasurer; Heather Patrick, Advisor: Mrs. Langhorne.
