Traces 198 . v E nr Lg o 0 r mi H i gtTScho o I Enfield, Connecticul DEDICATION To Succeed To laugh often and much; To win respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics . . . To appreciate beauty and to find it in others, To leave the world a bit better . . . To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; This is to have succeeded. We, the Class of 1982 dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Donald Flebotte, an eminent figure to each who has experienced his dynamic teaching technique and acquired his priceless friendship. The greatest teacher does not stop at the mere teaching of a subject — he inspires his students to love what he is doing, because he loves what he is doing. Mr. Flebotte not only teaches psychology and sociology, but he teaches us about ourselves as well. He has an uncanny understanding of our daily struggles with rules, peers, values, and parents. With his humor and charm he makes us laugh at our foibles. In the past, Mr. Flebotte has served other school districts as principal and assistant principal. He has also worked as a Secondary School Specialist for the Division of Youth Services in Massachusetts. In 1972, he joined the faculty of Enrico Fermi. That year our school was granted an invaluable gift; Mr. Flebotte himself. The irresistible Mr. Flebotte is involved in a number of activities for the students of our school. He efficiently manages the senior yearly fund raiser; the magazine drive. The success of this drive can be attributed to his continual assistance and encouragement. In addition, he acts as the chairman for the graduation procession. For these services and this unselfish devotion time, we thank-you. Upon graduation the class of 1982 acknowledges you with respect and admiration. Your influence upon us will prove that you have succeeded! Plato Fermi High School provides the groundwork for its students to choose their path; their road of life. In 1979 Fermi’s sophomores came from two junior high schools. As two roads that are destined to intersect, this student body quickly merged to form a united class. In order for the many barriers to be broken it was necessary for each student to do some yielding. The result was a strong, unified class who marched steadily down the same road toward a common end; graduation. During its three year stay at Fermi the class of 1982 continually prepared for the future. Fermi not only offered unparalleled facilities and accommodation for this preparation, but it also offered something more. Individually students were carefully given guidance and direction by devoted teachers, counselors, and administrators. Each student was encouraged to set goals and to aspire to attain them. Each was prompted to continually reach for his final destination. DECISIONSDECISIONSDECISIONS If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. Henry David Thoreau EMPLOYMENT OFFICE Graduation for the class of 1982 is not an end to a road, but a hurdle conquered along the road of life. The decisions made at the time prior to graduation will effect how far along this road each will progress. Fermi’s strong academic program coupled with its facilities and extra curricular opportunities has served to prepare each student to proceed along this road. Some students will enter the work force immediately and others will choose to further their education. In either case, Fermi’s students can be confident they have the essential background to become successful and well-rounded individuals, ready to enter society along that road which is unique only to them. The class of 1982 is ready to pursue its dreams, reach its goals and arrive at its destinations. Ahead lies the most difficult bend in the road. The directions have been set. It is now up to the individual to use his intuition acquired through his experiences at Fermi to guide him. The road will not always be a smooth one. Therefore, each individual must have faith in his decisions; faith in his goals; and faith in choosing the right path in his life. JOB SEARCH 6 Exists in every human nature a goal . . . Emily Dickinson 7 THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. IN REMEMBRANCE OF... He has taken his bright candle and is gone Into another room I cannot find But anyone can tell where he has been By all the little lights he leaves behind. Mr. Paul Adeletti was a science teacher in the Enfield Public School System until the time of his death on April 21 , 1981 . The first five years of his Enfield teaching experience were spent at John F. Kennedy Junior High School, and then from September of 1977 until his death, he was a part of the Fermi High School Faculty. He taught various courses within the science department, including Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Practical Science. Paul Adeletti, through his kindness and gentleness, enlightened his students during the years he taught science in Enfield. He was an effective and dedicated teacher. His students knew that he cared about them as individuals. He would listen to their problems. They, in turn, would listen to him, for they knew he possessed outstanding knowledge in the field of science. We remember Paul as a sensitive man, cognizant of the needs of students, his fellow faculty members, and the school in which he served. He always gave willingly of his time, energy, and expertise. Paul had a reverence for life which few people could match. This was evident in his desire to care for the many plants and animals in the Science Department. He was particularly fascinated by the interrelationships found between form and function that living things possess. We will miss his presence among us, and he will forever hold a special place in our memory of Fermi High School. His high standards will always encourage his students to achieve; and his love and concern will always enrich their lives. Mr. Steven Olson 1 . Rick Desrosiers is shocked by his report card. 2. We have experienced many of the same happy times and sad times. In this way, there is a closeness between us all that makes us a family. We are all unique, yet there is a closeness that makes us a class. When we came to Fermi just three short years ago, we were insecure and unfamilar with our surroundings. We looked up to the seniors in awe. As juniors we were in the center of the school structure. We had gained more experience than we had as sophomores, but not earned the respect we would have as seniors. Now, as seniors, we are ready to graduate. We feel comfortable and confident in ourselves. We have reached our goal, which such a short time ago, seemed so far away. Graduation is a day of great joy and accomplishment. We have spent over half our lives striving for this goal. After having left, we will miss our friends, but our memories will allow us to remain close. Venturing forth into continuing new experiences, we will remember our days at Fermi High. We will remember the happiness, the sorrows, and the triumphs. The knowledge gained here will guide us along our paths into the future. Our class, the class of 1982, is part of a new generation whose members shall continue on to be the future leaders of this country. Craig Carlson 1 . Class President: Craig Carlson 2. After an exciting opening day victory over East Hartford, the team struggled to a 3 and 6 record. Additional victories came at the hands of Manchester, a 9 to 0 shutout, and in a very big victory against our traditional rival Enfiel d, on Thanksgiving Day. Despite this record and the disadvantages of having to learn completely new offensive and defensive systems without the benefit of spring practice, the team always displayed a positive attitude and constantly improved. The players, particularly the seniors, should be commended for their fine efforts this year. Hopefully the work and success that the team initiated this season will become the foundation for many more successful seasons in the future for Fermi Football. Coach Bacewicz 103 Page 104 1 . SOCCER Rewards may be measured in many ways — financial success, fame, or personal accomp lishments to name a few. In our scheme of things, we sought personal accomplishment and succeeded. From this base of development, there are only good things to expect in the future. This past season has been a most enjoyable experience. There were times when we were behind in a game and nobody felt down because of it. We matured as a team; a quality present in all superior teams. Next season should be a continuation of all these positive accomplishments, and certainly, reason enough to look forward to more successful seasons. Sixteen terrific players achieved a 6-12 record, Fermi ' s best Varsity and Junior Varsity so far! Laurie Shewokis and Lynne Smith were the most outstanding seniors and co-captains. They were CCIL all-stars and three year letter earners as well. They were aptly supported by Lori Duga, Ann Lee, and Nancy Murphy. The Varsity MVP was Laurie Shewokis and the Junior Varsity MVP was Nancy Ortiz. Also, supporting the team’s efforts are up-and-coming underclassmen Sondra Overstrom, Lisa Maxwell, and Carol Jaworowski. Congratulations on a job well done. I hope future players will be inspired by the talent displayed by this group! Good luck! Coach Carbone 108 i 109 Page 108 1. Lisa Maxwell does the bump as Lori Duga and Lynne Smith look on. 2. The 6-6-3 league record is the best field hockey record since 1975. In qualifying for the CIAC State Tournament and compiling a 1-1 record, this 1981 team has established a new record for future teams to challenge. All who played this year have endured extremes in weather, officiating techniques and more than their share of lumps, bumps and bruises. For both squads, there is much to be proud of and many memories that will long be remembered. Outstanding examples of leadership came from captains Mary Baldyga and JoAnn Bugai. These seniors set the pace for the season, and, along with the rest of the seniors, have heightened the level of play and sportsmanship. Their individual talents will be a source of inspiration to the 1982 team efforts. I feel fortunate to have coached such a dedicated, hard-working, mature and determined group of individuals. This 1981 season was filled with many firsts and I shall long remember it . . . and you . . . with a smile of fond memories. Tom is scoring at 21+ per game and Bill is rebounding at 12+ rebounds per game. A new six page booklet was produced to enhance the overall basketball program and increase crowd participation. Throughout the year. America witnessed many tragedies as well as successes; the current events sent the people of America on a spiritual, emotional and physical rollercoaster. Their strength, as a whole, would determine their will to strive on. Unfortunately, many of the year ' s headlines told of unemployment, murder and inflation. October ' s news stories reported the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and the attempts upon the lives of Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan. The brutal slayings of Atlanta children was fortunately resolved with the trial, the convic- tion and the sentencing of Wayne Williams. The crash of the Air-Florida jet had a devastating impact on the nation, but the tragedy helped unite the country. Entertainment provided Americans with an escape from the cold realities of daily life. Americans still enjoyed going out to the cinema as exemplified by the popularity and pro- fits of this year ' s box office smashes. Some of the more suc- cessful mo vies were; Raiders of the Lost Ark. Reds, and Stripes. In addition to films, the 1981-82 sports events in- cluded the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl victory, the sum- mer long baseball strike, and the triumph of the Dodgers in the World Series. Steve Maher was honored as the first gold medal winner in a world champion ski race. Bjorn Borg was crushed by John McEnroe, the newly top-seeded tennis player in the World Cup. Hockey ' s Wayne Gretsky surpassed Phil Esposito ' s record of 76 goals in a single season. Many successful events also provided an uplift to the spirit of America.
