For years we have been stepping in and out of Fermi’s doors, classrooms and buses, but it is only now that we will take our first step. Every day when we stepped in and out of these doors, we were preparing for this event, although many of us didn’t know it. As ready as we’ll ever be, we’ll walk away for the last time. We will enter a world which we know little of, a world which seemed so distant and foreign a few years ago a world that went unrecognized yesterday. As we say farewell, I congratulate all of you in the class of 1 980 upon your graduation. I ask that you measure your experience here, not by the beauty of steel and bricks and mortar, but through the real worth of our school, which can only be determined by the quality and spirit and determination of those who form it. In this, you have played a vital role. I, therefore, implore you, as we enter the new decade of the eighties, to use the knowledge and experience you have gained at Fermi High School to enrich your future and those around you, to pull together to rid society of racial, ethnic and religious pre- judices, and to bring peace and harmony into the world. Graduation is one of the many crossroads in your life. As you reach for new adventures, keep alive the memories from Fermi High School and meet the future with great anticipation and self-confidence.
