“I am asking you what you want to be, Asking you what you want of me. Telling you there is nothing in yourself Ever to fear. And wondering if you hear.” John Holmes Aside from our parents, the people who will have the most lasting influence on our lives will be our teachers. They will learn what our goals are, to what extent we will pursue them, and proceed to point us in that direction. Despite this, they are only minor partners in the business of education. They cannot thrust something upon us which we don’t want. They cannot create a mind, a heart, or a will to learn. They can only try to develop what we have brought to them. To deny teachers this is to deny ourselves, for an education is the most valuable thing we will ever have. Teachers can open the window and point to the horizon. They can light lanterns and put them in our hands, but we must walk into the dark alone.

“My confidant, my inspiration, my strength — my Friend.” Our friends — we laugh with them, we cry with them. We dare to be ourselves with them, for they accept the bad along with the good. They make us feel a little more special than we really are. Our friends — we learn with them and from them. We communicate, exchange ideas, and grow together. We share what little experience we have, and make each other whole. Our friends — they enrich our lives, forever. Wherever we go, we carry a part of them with us. When we are in solitude, we are content, because together or apart, we are friends. We are about to begin a new journey into the unknown, the unfamiliar — but we will be no more alone than we are now.
