Her outstand- ing professionalism and optimistic attitude to- ward life continue to serve as an inspiration to all who are acquainted with her. After 43 years of being teacher, department head, and friend, she has retired from the En- field school system. We feel that without her and the support of the English Department, our years at Fermi would not have been complete. Together with Miss Malley, the English Depart- ment has contributed to the molding of our characters and has provided a foundation for our future. We wish to extend sincere appreciation to Miss Mary Malley and to the English Depart- ment without whom we would not have had such memorable years. Thank you. The Class of 1 978 m Because of your strong faith I kept the track Whose sharp-set stones my strength had well-nigh spent. I could not meet your eyes if I turned back; So on I went. Because you would not yield belief in me, The threatening crags that rose my war to bar, I conquered inch by crumbling inch — to see The goal afar. And though I struggle toward it through hard years. Or flinch, or falter blindly, yet within, You can! unwavering my spirit hears And I shall win. Administration As we bid farewell to the Class of 1978, I congratulate all of you upon your graduation and the vital role you have played in establishing the real worth of our school which is determined by the quality, spirit and determination of those of us who form it. You have presented a continuing challenge to us to do better with a resulting mutual interest in becoming finer in every area of school life. I urge you to use the knowledge and experience you have gained here throughout yo ar adult life in helping the community in which you live. No matter what your profession or occupation, your learning will open doors of greater opportunity and success for you and, because it has provided you with a greater understanding of others, you can put it to practice with consideration and thoughtfulness. Your perseverance to your ideals based upon the knowledge you have gained throughout your twelve years will earn for you a respected place in the society of your fellows. As we explore the path for our future, Fermi will be a part of all our memories. The spirit we have developed while working together has brought unity to our class. We have shared friendship, laughter and some disappointments as we have progressed through Fermi. Our many efforts to win the Homecoming float contest have been disappointing, but our class spirit has never been outpowered. This was evident when we reached our goal of 19,000 dollars in the Magazine Drive setting a new school record. As you advance in life “enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Therefore, be what you want to be and strive for high ideals! To the faculty we give our thanks in appreciation of their sincere effort on our behalf. In the years to come, when you look back of these pages, I am sure you will remember not only the hard work, but the many pleasures we have shared. Be diligent, cheerful, and strive for happiness. Santo Lombardo The 1 977 Football team was one of the best in Fermi history. A fine group of seniors paved the way to a successful (6-3) season, good enough for third place in the CCIL. Two midseason shutout defeats at the hands of Conard, 8-0, and Simsbury, 6-0, could easily have been reversed and given the Falcons a spectacular 8-1 mark. Congratulations must go to the fine defensive unit which allowed just 73 points in 9 games, an 8.1 average. I would also like to commend the captains, Santo Lombardo, Tom Puleri, and Jerry Lovell, for their outstanding leadership on and off the field. Lombardo rushed for 861 yards while Puleri accumulated 576 yards. Players who received All-CCIL recognition were as follows: Mike Whalen, first team offensive and defensive tackle, one of only two players to gain honors going both ways; Santo Lombardo, first team offensive guard and second team halfback; Jerry Lovell, first team offensive guard and second team defensive guard; Paul Canone, second team quarterback; Dave Miller, second team linebacker; Tom Puleri, Jim Sroka, and Bob Brewster all received honorable mention. The great desire and will to win of this year ' s team carried them through the rough times and to a school record of six victories. Topping off the fine season was a 26-7 victory over crosstown rival Enfield on Thanksgiving Day. Joe Nuccio Head Football Coach fe 106 Front Row (L to R) — B. Scoville, D. Miller, D. Burn. JUNIOR VARSITY SOCCER TEAM Soccer — 1977 Season: It has been said that not one man does a team make. As it is applied to the 1 977 Soccer Team, it might be said that truer words were never spoken. The team consist- ed of such balance that it became difficult to select a most valuable player for the game; this speaks highly for the tri-captains of the team who kept the team working as one — the dream of all coaches. The season ended with a record of 4 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie. To say this is indicative of the team ' s play would be a lie. In seven of the nine losses, Fermi was in the game to the final moment — rarely losing by more than one goal. It is felt that next year will be a better year since we have a junior Varsity team that will take over where the Varsity left off. Our 1977 team was led by tri-captains Kelly O ' Brien, Lynn Daprato, Carol Mon. This was what is known in the sports world as a rebuilding year with only nine junior and senior members and 1 5 sophomores on the team. Many of the sophomores showed marked improvement as the season progressed and we proved to be a formidable opponent to all during the second half of the season. The 1977-78 Fermi High Cheerleaders have had a very eventful year. The girls started their practices early last summer and in August, they participated in The University of Connecticut cheering clinic where they achieved recog- nition by winning three ribbons in team competition. They moved on to the fall season where they cheered for all varsity football games and any other event that involved Fermi and its rival Enfield High. After football came basketball season in which the girls cheered their team on to many victories. The cheerleaders also take on the responsibility of coor- dinating pep rallies, painting posters, and decorating locker rooms. Our cheerleaders have done an excellent job this year, headed by co-captains JoAnne Fotos and Kathy Mayo, and are a credit to Enrico Fermi High School. The 1977 Field Hockey team met the challenge by developing the necessary skills of the game while creating a strong team effort in every game. A won-lost record of 3-1 0 may look bleak, but a strong foundation has been built for a better season in 1978. Seniors Pam Thibodeau, Karen Thibodeau, and Leslee Young gave 1 00% for Fermi, and each girl ' s individual talents will be missed. Pam shared co-captain duties with junior Lori Delay, and their leadership helped to continue the high level of competition and sportsmanship that Fermi Field Hockey is known for. The Junior Varsity team members gained invaluable experience while compiling a 4-5-4 record, which should help those girls who move up to the Varsity squad next year. Its first two CCIL wins came at the expense of Penny and Enfield. A very fine team and individual perform- ance on Columbus Day at the K of C Invitational Meet resulted in seven awards. The team finished fourth out of seventeen and individually finished 8, 20, 30, 40, 50 from over 100 runners. The team that worked so hard will miss its sen- iors, especially its graduating captains Matt Donelan, Mark Faille and Bob Pfeifer who set excellent examples. Conard and Simsbury in 15 days — FERMI ' S FIRST VOLLEYBALL TEAM! 9 Seniors, 9 Juniors and 4 Sophomores. We worked hard and fast to prepare ourselves for a very short season — 9 big games, all from October 1 2 — November 1 . Each and every one of those games made us better, more confident and most of all, more experienced volleyball players. We were not totally defeated. We beat Enfield High 7 out of 8 games. We had a home game against Penny High and they decided to use their best Varsity servers in the J.V. game, but it didn ' t work — our J.V. ' s beat them. I attribute their success to some fine young athletes who have dedicated themselves to the game and have worked very hard. High points of the season are big wins over Enfield, South Windsor twice, and a devastating 7-3 victory over state champs Fairfield Prep. Six of the Fermi icemen were in the top 20 in scoring in Northern Connecticut, and three were in the top 10. There is a lot that could be said about the individuals on this team, but I ' d rather say it about the team, You ' re the finest young men that I have ever worked with. Special thanks to the seniors: Captain Ken Richer, Alter- nate Captain Steve jensen. Jack Shaughnessy, Rich Sawtelle, Todd Sawamura, Fran Bourque, Nelson Aiken, and Jim Brown. You will probably never find a group such as this; among these eight seniors are All-Staters, All-Leaguers, and above average hockey players. But they shared one thing with the whole team; they taught themselves how to reach within and challenge their potential to succeed and the ability to play as a team. Thanks, team. Other outstanding wrestlers include Jerry Lovell, a dynamic athlete at 1 67 lbs.; Joe Back- us, last years ' outstanding wrestler, All-League and All-State at 145 lbs.; Stuart King at 138 lbs., Tim Brodtman at 155 and Bruce Newport at 1 12; cer- tainly a highly respected group for their skill and toughness throughout our league. Boys ' w I m m I n g CURRENTS Sadat ' s trip to Israel was an his- toric event. By the trajectory of his 28-minute flight from a base in the Canal Zone to Tel Aviv ' s Ben Gu- rion Airport, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat changed the course of Middle East for generations to come. More emphatically than any- thing that has happened there since the birth of Israel in 1948, his extraordinary pilgrimage trans- formed the political realities of a region blackened and embittered by impermeable hatred and chronic war. Not in three decades had the dream of peace looked so real. Sadat said We used to reject you, true. We refused to meet you anywhere, true. Yet to- day we agree to live with you in peace and justice. Israel has become an ac- complised fact recog- nized by the whole world and the superpowers. We welcome you to live among us in peace and security. Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll died August 16, 1977, leaving a generation be- hind. In the 1950 ' s Presley changed American en- tertainment. His twisting hips enraged adults but thrilled thousands of The King Lives On teenagers. It was his style that paved the new road in music. Born on January 8, 1 935, he was 1 8 when he cut his first record. In the course of his career he sold 6,000,000,000 records and made 33 movies. Falcons Tame Raiders For the first time in three years, the mighty Falcon football team crushed the crosstown rival, Enfield High, in the big Thanksgiving Day game! Spirits were high that day on both sides of the field, and there was an emotion-packed game, but the Falcons came out on top. Enfield High was held completely scoreless until the last few minutes, but the impor- tant thing was the Fal- con ' s victory. FASHION NEWS The key for fashion in 1977-1978 was you . Fashions presented the opportunity for an ex- pression of the individual. The look was different, but the flavor the same, something just for me. Clothes were easy, casual or elegant and airy. Col- ors varied from the bold and dramatic to the soft and subtle. jeans, jackets, boots and warm layers with a snap of plaid made the fashion scene. The spotlight fell upon trench coats, big sweaters, fitted vests, gauchos, tuck-ins, tail- ored jackets, accessories and hair styles. Hair fashion focused on freedom; it was versatile, long, wa- vey, sassy short, twisted up, wisped around. Remember: Levis, moccasins, and a plaid shirt; Frye boots, gauchos and a silky blouse or a tail- ored jacket and cor- duroy pants. The Signs Of Our Time Cars are the most important means of transportation in America, and Fermi ' s parking lot proves it. Nearly everyone at Fermi learns to drive at sixteen and soon after begins using the family car for trans- portation to and from school. A brief look around the Fermi parking lots shows that small cars are popular. Four-cylin- der cars like the Subaru, FHonda, and Toyota are economi- cal and have thus become another sign of the times since the lowest price of gas is 58 . 9 . But bigger cars like LTD ' s, Trans AMs, and Monte Carlos are still popular. For those who can afford them, they provide prestige, comfort, and elegance. Sleek and smooth-running, they are probably well worth the extra cost to those who own them. Vans, too, are popular. Almost everyone would love to own these custom- painted homes on wheels . 144 Igor Leaves With A Bang Storm Igor, described as the worst storm to hit Connecticut since 1961, claimed the Hartford Civ- ic Center as its most seri- ous casualty. The massive roof of the building col- lapsed beneath tons of snow, ice, and water before dawn January 1 8, 1 978, virtually destroying the heart of the 70 million dollar facility. I can ' t begin to de- scribe the absolute horror and frustration to think that people were in the Civic Center, a few hours ago, said weeping Gover- nor Ella T. Grasso. The 10,000 seat coli- seum was the central part of the Civic Center and was considered Hart- ford ' s main attraction. It was also home to the New England Whalers professional hockey team. As a result of the disaster, the team was forced to schedule its re- maining games at the Springfield Civic Center. Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head Rushing down the halls of our beloved school, students have oft- en been hit by misguided mois- ture. A sideward glance reveals streams of water rolling down um- protected walls. Students ' eyes look down in an attempt to avoid the many puddles and scattered cans which line the hallways as well as the classrooms. Memories of Fermi ' s flat roof will last long after the rugs have dried — if they ever do! 145 Advisors (Missing from picture): Mr. Robert Knight, Mrs. Florence Lyons, Miss Laura Baione, Officers: Tim Macintosh (Pres.), Bev Baril (Vice Pres.), Fran Koperniak (Dir. of Act.), Ann Mensinger (Sec.), Sally Griffin (Treas.), Sue Sheehan (Hist.) How Have Your Experiences At Fermi High School Helped You To Progress? I think my relationships with both students and teachers at Fermi have taught me a lot about different kinds of people. Also, my athletic experiences have showed me the value of teamwork and self-discipline. I feel these lessons in life are as important as academic lessons because they shape the values and beliefs we will carry throughout our lives. Doug Burn Throughout my years at Fermi I ' ve gained much respect for a few outstanding faculty members. Through these people I ' ve learned a great deal about life. My thanks to them. Ed Yiznitsky When I arrived at Fermi, my meek musical interests were broadened by a growing spirit and a superior program. I went beyond my limits to improve in different areas of music. All that I ' ve learned will take me far into life with a clear understanding and appreciation of music. Ellen Wilber 174 My experiences in Fermi have helped me progress most in the area of socializing. I have learned to understand the feelings of those around me, and I am less self-conscious now, when meeting new people. Lisa Clark My experiences at Fermi have allowed me to progress in that the opportunities available, academic, athletic and social, have brought me together with many different people with a wide range of interests. My years at Fermi made me realize that understanding people that are different and have different points of view is essential in order to progress later in life. Joe Backus Fermi has opened the door for me to a talent that I wished to develop. Fermi has given me a different outlook on my future as a commercial artist, thus giving me a better understanding of new medias, methods, and techniques. But, most of all, my experiences have taught me to have the self-confidence and the patience to continue with my studies as a professional. Rick Ferreira 175 ) r ocy v vO ' •-C ' y ' , V 1 _ . George played number one singles and established a fine seven and seven record. He was also awarded the most valuable player for this year. This year wasn ' t one of our best years as far as wins are concerned. Our record was two wins and twelve losses. I feel that experience was the major factor contributing to our losses. Three out of our seven starting posi- tions were filled with sophomores who have never played any competitive tennis. And when a match consists of one team winning four out of the possible seven points, it becomes very difficult to compile wins. The 1978 softball team is to be commended on achieving an 11-7 regular season record. The inexperience of such a large number of new team members showed itself in the 4-5 mid-season record. The acquired knowledge and increased effort paid off for a productive 7-2 second record. It is to the team ' s credit that Fermi again qualified for a fifth consecutive State Tournament berth. My thanks to seniors Anne Lemeris and Pam Thibodeau for their continuing leadership and individual efforts to pass along the win- ning ways that have become a tradition for Fermi softball. It has indeed been a pleasure to have coached both of these players, and their abilities will be missed by all. Anne was named to the CCIL All-Star Team at third base and was joined for the honor by sopho- more outfielder Leah Secondo. The newly established junior varsity team, ably coached by Diane Teske, gained invaluable experience and many players should see varsity action in 1979. It is my hope that this program will continue to develop, thus providing more girls the opportunity to play soft- ball for Fermi. In a re-building year such as this was, I am most pleased with the progress made, and look forward to the coming season with much anticipation for an even stronger performance by this young team. — Miss Sullivan BOYS ' TRACK First row (L-R) (capts.) )ohn Cote, Bob Pfeifer, Brent Scoville, Rudy Burns. Most all of them have worked at their events for the past three years and the benefits of the practices and devotion paid off for them this year. Weightmen Bob Brewster, Greg Piepul, Mike Whalen and Brent Scoville all had suc- cessful years. Brewster set the discus record, Scoville placed third in the State Open and Piepul was the team M.V.P. Long and triple jumpers )ohn Cote, Fred Olko, Rudy Burns and pole vaulter Scott Vinning all contributed to the field event success. Bob Pfeifer and Pat McIntosh held down the distance running with McIntosh breaking the 880 record. Rudy Burns and jim Sroka were the senior sprinters helping to break the 4(110) relay record, and Sroka also broke the 120 Fligh Hurdles record. The team ' s season ended with a 4-7 won lost record falling short by just a few points in some close meets. There are many tal- ented underclassmen who aided this year ' s team and must fill the gap left by this year ' s seniors. With hard work and devotion those new records may be broken again next year.
