The English curriculum has been designed by the instructors in the department to help stu- dents be effective in the many uses of the lan- guage. In the required writing courses, it is in- tended that the instruction and concentrated practice will lead to clear and persuasive expres- sion of students’ knowledge and creative thoughts. Elective courses in many types of liter- ature give students the opportunity to learn, in- terpret, and apply the thoughts, as well as the writing style, of established writers of the past and present. To make it possible for all students to achieve these goals, a wide variety of course materials and teaching methods must be used. It is hoped that the curriculum will help stu- dents to be skilled and at ease in communica- tion, whether they are speaking or listening, reading or writing. 25 Miss Mary Malley, Department Ch ' airman

INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION Industrial Education is an activity-oriented curriculum area concerned with problems of an industrial nature, and how to solve these prob- lems. This may be accomplished by recognizing and defining problems, thinking critically and objectively about them and acting constructively and creatively toward their solution. Individual capacity, viewpoint, choice and action are qualities that make us human. Self- expression, as manifested in art, distinguishes individuals as well as cultures.
