The years have gone by but like a fleeting wind down the path of dreams our memories hold a time for us. Live for today . . . If we should live a thousand years , our time is today, Today. — James Montgomery foot Dream for tomorrow. Ready am I to go, And my eagerness With sails full set. Awaits the wind. MR. ANTHONY TORRE . . . a man a friend a believer . . . You are gone yet never forgotten, An empty chair stands still where, in our hearts, only you can sit. You are more than words can tell; You are the beauty of our todays, the foundation of our tomorrows . . . . . . you are the one to whom we dedicate this yearbook. 12 13 MR. MARIO A. GENTILE PRINCIPAL As we say farewell, I congratulate all of you in the Class of 1974 upon your graduation. We trust we have prepared you at Fermi to carry on the American way of life, living in contentment but not complacency. I urge you to use the knowl- edge and experience you have gained here to enrich your future and that of our nation. I hope that you will strive to improve mankind, to live in a world of peace and harmony, enjoying the beauty that exists and working to elimi- nate the ugliness. The influence of friends and teachers, through education, should have in- creased your inspiration to succeed in your own ambitions and should have strengthened your resolve to live as an inspiration to others. As you reach for new adventure in life, I ask that you treasure the qualities of kindness, hones- ty, understanding, and courage. Strive to find the truth, declare the truth, and accept the truth. Best wishes for continued success to the first class to have completed three years at Enrico Fermi High School. Mario A. Gentile Principal 16 HOUSEMASTERS Mr. Ralph J. There is not a living organism, not an inert object, not a cloud in the sky, not a green shoot in the meadow, which does not hold for him the secret of the great power hidden in all things. Rodin ART Mrs. Jane Docker “Visually orient yourself’ Industrial Education is an activity-oriented cur- riculum area concerned with problems of an indus- tria l nature, and how to solve these problems. This may be accomplished by recognizing and defining problems, thinking critically and objectively about them and acting constructively and creatively to- ward their solution. -INDUSTRIAL P EDUCATION Mr. James Hodrinsky Dept. MUSIC Mr. John Mariano Mr. Joseph Giangrasso 32 2:o H ocom r n The Physical Education Department has developed a selective program which has been offered for two years. Students meet five days a week and participate in various units of activity for a designated period of time. Physical Education is no longer a recreational period at Fermi High, but we feel it is a learning experience geared to the development of life time sports and physical fitness. Realizing the system is not perfect, we are continually changing and improving the program in the hope that more students can and will enjoy activity. Good luck to the Class of ' 74 The Physical Education Department Mr. Joseph Nuccio Miss Leah Carter fk f Mr. Robert Lengyl Mrs. Lora Arnold Mrs. Carol Albert Geez Louise.” 33 Quarter and semester courses in English provide students with broad and mean- ingful experience in the arts of reading and writing. Don ' t let me break down and cry! Help me keep my temper cool As I begin each day of school. My homeroom is just down the hall Erom the busiest hangout of them all. A smoke-filled room with a littered floor; The butts disappear as I come through the door. I try to realize the students ' plight Because they stayed up late last night. But. when half my classes are sound asleep. My peace of mind I cannot keep. And when my class responds so well I’m surprised delighted my pride doth swell! So I ask, What is relative mass?” Instead I hear, “Can I use the pass? I think I give a fair exam But then I hear, “Y ou ' re crazy, ma ' am. I f you think we can pass this test. Better cross your fingers and hope for the best!” I dread one period every day. But I guess there ' s just no other way. Study halls are quite a zoo; Eighty kids with nothing to do. Then there ' s that blessed time of day When all my troubles go away Everyone ' s happy; my heart even sings. At two o ' clock, when the last bell rings. So help me, someone, to get through the year. Because if I don’t, I can ' t shed a tear For all of my students that I’ve had before, Especially the great kids from the class of ' 74. i •• ■ - • “ ■ : ' The time we have spent at Enrico Fermi High School has been short. When we began as Sophomores we were not aware of the varied experiences which were aheadTor us during the next three years. We were on the threshold of a new life and about to gain insight into the many ave- nues of learning. We were to gain knowledge and under- standing of our fellow man and make lasting friendships which would keep alive the memories and experiences we would earn during high school. We leave Enrico Fermi High School as older and wiser individuals, looking into the future with great confidence and anticipation. Our educators have tried to prepare us for the many obstacles we will face in this uncertain world. We have worked together as one class for three years, but now the time has come when each of us will begin a different role in society. The only thing we can do is put to use the knowledge we have gained over the past twelve years and apply it to our own very special lives. We know we have only scratched the surface of life and there are so many roads to be explored. There is so much more to learn and do and it is there just waiting for each of us. We are closing a very special and memorable, if not brief, chapter of our lives, one filled with much laughter and sadness, memo- ries and dreams, lasting experiences and friendships. We must not look back in sadness, but forward in happiness. Time does not erase these memories and friendships we have gained; rather, it keeps them alive within us always. May each of us in the Class of 1974 use our lives in a productive way and l ive with much success, luck and happiness forever, always remembering our days at Enrico Fermi High School. At the beginning of the school year, in September, I felt we had a chance at a .500 season at best. Little did I realize the re- ward of the good hard work that was forth- coming. This team performed beyond my expectations, ending the season with a 6-3-4 record two of those losses by only one goal. GIRLS’ FIELD HOCKEY This year’s field hockey season featured a number of notable accomplish- ments achieved by the team and by individual members of the squad. The girls ' 1973 schedule included several perennial state hockey powers, such as E. O. Smith, Simsbury, and Granby. Strong peformances against these highly-re- spected opponents proved Fermi deserving of similar recognition. The team ' s two games with Granby, the eventual 1973-74 state champion, were particularly impressive as Fermi lost 3-2 and then held Granby to a scoreless tie in their sec- ond meeting. The girls finished their regular season with a record of 8-2-2 which qualified them for state tournament, ranked 17th in the state. In a thrilling contest, the girls defeated Suffield 2-1 in triple overtime, but then lost to Guilford, the tour- ney ' s runner-up, 1 -0. Participating in the state tournament was an exciting expe- rience for the team and one of which they can be very proud. Outstanding achievements by individuals on the team include the record scor- ing of Senior Donna Teske as she led the team in scoring for the third straight year. Donna recorded 18 goals, while Sarah King and Sharon Benoit each had 10. Donna ' s school record of 27 goals for her three year varsity career will be very difficult to surpass. Outstanding performances were consistently recorded by Junior Mike Jones and Sophomore Don Gonzalez who usually finished second and third respectively. Perhaps the highlight of the year was the Enfield meet in which Fermi swept the first four places. The thrill of victory The agony of defeat COACHING STAFF Kneeling Mr. Bob Lengyl (Asst. Coach), Mr. Joe Nuccio (Head Coach). Mr. John Kouba. Standing Mr. Dan Gallo, Mr. Bill Barker, Mr. Lennie Shorts. Can our season be measured by wins and losses alone? If so, we have achieved but mediocrity. Yet, if we did not achieve in other ways, even an undefeated season would have been meaningless. Any coach will preach the importance of blocking and tackling to his players, but what is it that makes those players respond? It is pride; pride in their team, pride in their school, and especially pride in themselves. Football does not take place merely between the markings of white lime, not only within the walls of a locker room, not only before the cheering crowds of a rally, not only during a victory celebration or at a silent meeting of dejected losers. It is an emotional experience unique for each individual. These are the things seniors must leave behind each year. This year thirteen of us ieave them be- hind with a lingering emptiness. It is an honor accompanied by responsibilities such as: making posters, selling booster badges, trying to fill spectator busses, and cheer- ing for a game when school spirit has died, almost. Then, there are very special times unique to a cheerleader and her squad; Going to cheerleading camp in 90 degree summer weather, making sure everyone who needs a ride gets one in the “Nova”, meeting a new advisor whose first comment is “you’re mental” and after all this, still wanting to be friends outside school. This year’s squad achieved a closeness which shines through both on and off the field and court. Thus, it is with regret that a season ends, especially for the seniors, who have just begun to get to know each other after three very full years. But, a cheer- leader leaves with the feeling that she has played as big a part in the making of Fermi High as Fermi High did in the making of her. Highlights of the season were second place in the Northern Division Independent Schools Swimming Championships; and Jim Gavin’s Fine second place finish at the State “LL” Champi- onships at Southern Connecticut State College. — Coach Lengyel - 120 I Bob Block (Captain) A1 Walton Bill Price Rich Stewart Ron Painchaud Steve Landry Mel Feltault Jerry Bernard Put it here, Jim. I think I’ll take a nap. Here I go again. Holy mackerel! C’mon move it! I thought the coach said this was the easy stroke. Maybe I’ll win. The 1973-74 basketball season witnessed the departure of six seniors, the arrival of some promising new faces and a new coach. Co-captains Diane Derose and Donna Teske concluded their third year of varsity participation and were instrumental in establishing an atmosphere of pride, unity, and respect that survived a long season and the disappoint- ment of not qualifying for Connecticut’s first state tourna- ment for girls’ basketball. The girls’ respectable 7-7 record was one percentage point under the 51% cutoff to be eligible for post-season play. There was no lag, however, in the team’s spirit or de- termination as hopes of making the tournament were kept alive up to the very last game which the girls narrowly lost to Penney 27-32. The team’s schedule included some very tough competition as 3 of the 7 schools played finished the year ranked within the top 15 Class L teams in the state. Being a member of a successful team entails a great deal more than simply acquiring skills and being in condition. It necessitates strict self-discipline, an intimate rapport amongst the teammates founded on principles of respect and understanding, maintaining a deep sense of pride in your efforts, and the ability to share joy with teammates. It was in these aspects of team-membership that this team excelled to surpass their tangible success-rating of 50%. Because of their willingness to address themselves to the task of try ing to master all facets of a “basketball sea- son” they emerged better people from the experience, as well as better athletes. A “home” rink which was actually miles from home and a painful scarc- ity of practice dates were prime fac- tors in limiting the success of the team. And yet, if anything, the story of this team is a success story. Despite the poor conditions, the team compiled a fine 11-9 record against some of the state’s Finest hockey teams, only to be “reward- ed” by another setback. Technicali- ties in their schedule denied the team a berth in post-season tournament play; a berth which no team could have deserved more. It was the rapport established by youthful Coach Ed Mantenuto with the diverse personalities of his team which enabled him to demand and get the best his players had to offer. Falcon hockey contests were typified by vicious checking and all out hus- tle; a style of which Rick Trudeau was the epitome. The high points of the season will long be remembered - wins over powerhouses Suffield Academy, Conard, South Windsor, and an unprecedented dominance over arch- rival, Enfield. Even while they practiced in their gym den. If only their coach had been quiet. They might even have forgotten their diet. But what can one say about a record of two and eleven. Our coach says it’s better than zero and seven. Oh yes, our coach, what a nice guy. Even if he showed up looking like he was ready to die. Who could blame him for looking numb, All he shouted at matches was, “Don’t look back, you bum.” Then there were good times with Stauble and Sib. However hard we tried, they found no candidates from women ' s lib. Well the team’s very glad that they are all eating. They know well there will be no more beating. With the fine play and teamwork of our seniors, combined with the sharp shooting talents of our juniors, our squad fashioned an eight and twelve season. Yet, I ' m sad to say farewell Because, soon it will be over. Too many goodbyes, too many memories; All the hoarse throats and wrong notes; The sleepy away games and wonderful 45 yard goals; The ticket sales, long plays, and longer parties . Soon it will be over. All the raised gym floors and ugly grapevines; The pulled muscles and sweaty gymsuits, The smiles from forgotten faces, Campaign posters, make-up tests, and unsuccessful labs; All the goofed-up announcements and over-due library books. Soon it will be over. All the “WE ' RE FROM FERMI AND NO ONE COULD BE PROUDER!” cries. The walks through what you thought were empty halls, and then you ' d see a housemaster . . . who would give you a generous smile and a warm hello. All the times you were lonely, and all the friends who came are now more than just acquaintances. Soon it will be over. I ' ll miss the Yablonski Cheers and other Polish revolutions. Not forgetting the quiet Monday mornings and taxing Friday tests and great lunchroom get-togethers. The days you would lean against a wall and watch the passers-by. Or stop in the S.S. lab or converse with friends by the library. And I ' ll miss the firedrills that saved a few working minutes of class . . . Soon it will be over. Remember the rut you got into by taking the same route every day to classes, and then one day you decide to change and see new faces and temporarily forgotten smiles? Soon it will be over. I ' ll miss the boring assemblies and most of all. The Senior Class. The wonderul friends I’ve made And the cherished memories they have given me. And the demanding teachers who were beautiful people after the bell rang the delays of the national anthem And the weary feet and wornout heads . . Too soon it will all be over. The football season! The spirit, the fights, the tempers — the victorious embraces and the losing pats on another’s back. I ' ll miss the black cheeks beneath helmets and the crying fans. And the basketball season! With the strange and tickling feeling you get in your throat when the clock is running fast and you know that the Falcons have it all. And happy Mr. Snipe and sad Mr. Shea, or visa- versa. I won ' t forget the dances and the proms Or the varied fund-raising solicitors who drove the faculty up a wall. Soon it will be over. But to think it is ending And we will all leave each other behind, Y et carry with us only those memories of yesterday. I an i going to miss it, a lot . and so will the rest of the class. The class of 1 974 . Because we were in it all . together.
