Mainly through the existence of a fine spirit and much enthusiasm two other all- time school records were improved upon, the 'team seasons scoring record was upped to l-'10 points, while junior halfback Dick Morgan set a new individual scoring record of 43 points. This was a campaign of many pleasant memo- ries: that beautiful afternoon over at University City, the evening the Comets trailed at halftime but came back to score three touchdowns in six minutes and soundly defeated a good Soldan team, the display of offensive power in running over Maplewood. Six of the games were lost by a total of seventeen points. The number of victories is the most a Ferguson Varsity basketball team has compiled since the T941 season. The team averaged 63 points a game to set a new school record. Our opponents averaged 59 points a game which was the same as last year. The Comets made ATX, ot their field goal at- tempts, a new school record. High nights were against Normandy in the tournament when the Comets hit 582 and against Soldan and U-City No one will ever forget the Normandy Tourna- when they hit 5496 ot their shots. ment when the Comets upset 3rd-ranked Webster Groves 83-74, nor the night of the game against U-City when the Comets, again the underdog, upset the Indians in overtime 69-67. The B-team, coached by Henry Prokop, ended the season with a fine record of ll wins and 7 losses. Many records were made during this season. Ken Crouse tied the Junior 100 yard dash rec- ord of 11.0 seconds. Denny lsenberg made a school record for the 880 yard run at 3 minutes track 46.4 seconds. Jack Donton made a school record tor the 100 yard dash at 10.5 seconds. Bill Neel made a school record for the 440 yard dash at 53.5 seconds and Gary Gronemeyer madea school record for the 120 low hurdles at 15.8 seconds. The team showed school pride and ability in the fine way in which they have represented our school during the past year. lt was a team of which we can truly be proud. The season's record was seven wins, two ties, and eight losses: and there were many exciting and memorable matches. The climax of this year's wrestling season was the State Wrestling Tournament which was held at Ferguson on February 13, 14 and 15. The school was full of wrestling teams from all over Missouri and the team did a great job as host. Ritenour won, Webster took second place, Mis- souri School for the Blind, third, Normandy fourth, and Ferguson fifth place, although we were seeded for eighth place. Ferguson had more Back Row: Mr. Winscott, Jerry Sitzes, Jack Repp, John Stevens, Ellern, Hilbert Schoeninger, Walter Rice, Dean Spaulding, pins than any other team entering the Tourna- ment. Jerry Aubuchon, honorary captain of this year's team, took first place in his weight class, he had the most points of the two-hundred fifty- one boys entering, besides having the most points for the Ferguson team. Jerry Aubuchon has been representing the team during the year so when the co-captains were elected it wasn't surprising that he was chosen. Dick Montery was the other co-captain elected, and Mike Repp was chosen as the honorary captain for the coming year. Coach Winscott did a fine iob and spent many hours with the boys, giving them many skills used during the season. Under the lead- ership of their new sponsor, Mrs. Middleton, the group accomplished many projects. Homecoming was held again this year. On November 6 was the Homecoming Assembly. November 7 was a planned parade and out- door pep rally, but because of rain, the parade was called off and the rally was held in the gym. The crowd wasn't too large due to the change of plans at the last minute, but the spirit wasn't lacking! On November 8 was the home- coming game against Kirkwood and again it was raining. November 9 was the annual Pep Club dance. The gym was decorated in red and blue and named Homecoming '58, At the dance the honorary football team was escorted in by mem- bers of the football team who choose these five girls. The team consisted of Sharon Brown, Di- anne Austin, Madeleine Martin, Peggy Wallweb- er and Jackie Aubuchon who was crowned queen. The queen was presented with a gold football on a scepter and crowned with a football helmet, while the honorary team received red carnations with blue ribbons. ln the spring a pep assembly was held to pro- mote enthusiasm before the first league basket- ball game and to introduce the wrestling team. New this year were red and white beanies with Comets written across the top. Ferguson sweat-shirts and pom-poms were sold. Pep Club supported and sold post cards for the KXOK Prep Player of the week for the first time this year and their efforts were duly rewarded, because several of their candidates were picked as Prep Player of the Week. The Girls' Athletic Association, under the lead- ership of Mrs. Dieselhorst, Miss Crawford, and Mrs. Livingston, spent an active year in a variety of activities. The four major team sports, softball, hockey, basketball, and volleyball, plus a brand new individual sports program were introduced and enthusiastically received. The program included ping-pong, archery, shuffleboard, trampoline, and deck tennis, plus the usual track and tennis tournament. This program, sponsored by Mrs. Livingston was called the individual sports program and was introduced into G.A.A. for those girls who weren't interested in team sports. Points were also given in this field, giving the girls a chance to earn a letter in individual sports as well as participate in the teams. Another new program added this year for the first time was the advanced gym class, taught by Mrs. Dieselhorst and Miss Crawford. This class was composed of approximately forty-five students, above average in sports. These girls met every day during sixth hour and were graded on a higher standard than the regular gym classes with training on a higher skill level. Four days were spent in team sport skills and one day a week they participated in individual sports. G. A, A. OFFICERS Standing: Theo Homeyer, Treasurer, Betty Ambrose, Point Com- mittee Chairman. The purpose of G.A.A. is to promote good sportsmanship and leadership, and to sponsor the entire girls' sports and athletic program. Membership this year was the largest ever. Out ot three-hundred members, two-hundred and titty were active in one or more sports, making the program an even greater success. This year quickly passed with the usual round of sports and activities. G.A.A. again participated in the St. Louis County Sports Day with the sophomores and sen- iors victorious. The annual G.A.A. dance is the only dance of its kind during the year, and gives the girls a chance to go with the boy of her choice. It was successfully planned and presented by Sue Brace, Mary Cobb, and the social committee. With the theme ot School Daze, the gym was decorated with pencils, ink-wells, pens, school supplies and the proverbial red apple, complete with a cute worm. The clance was held on March l5, l958, and was one ofthe best attended during the year. Following tradition, the highlight of the eve- ning was the coronation of the honorary member. Each year the girls make corsages tor their dates and a corsage contest is held to select the most original corsage. First prize was received this year by Karla Atnip tor her unusual creation, worn by Don Spaulding. The five elected officers were sent to the St. Louis County G.A.A. conference held in Sherwood Forest. At this conference, they studied the ac- tivities and problems that arise during the school 3. a. a. year. One hundred points must have been earned during the past year to receive the award. A girl who earns one-hundred points for the second time was awarded a chevron and anyone who earned one hundred and fifty points in a year received a star and a chevron. This is the highest honor in G.A.A. The climaxing event of the year was the G.A.A. luncheon, held on May l7 at La Chateau At this time the awards were presented to the girls, and the officers for the coming year were announced. -75- ll dl E! in 4 -..-- li! After each CREST maid had executed a deep curtsy in front of the carna- tion-covered trellis which served as an entrance, she was met by her escort for the walk down the long center aisle. Theo Homeyer, as Mistress of Ceremonies, described each maid's gown and told of her activities and achievements during high school. Master of Ceremonies, Brian Costel- lo, related the activities and achievements of the escorts. When the eight CREST maids and their escorts had assembled before the pink and white backdrop at the north end of the new gymnasium, flower girl, Brenda McCallister, and crown bearer, Billy Owen, entered. Then came the moment all had been waiting for. Miss Laura Allman, wear- ing a lovely gown of white dotted tulle over pale peach taffeta, entered the gymnasium and was crowned CREST Queen of T958 by Ken Press, Advertising Manager of the CREST. This year's CREST CORONATION was held, for the first time, in two gymnasiums. The actual Coronation took place in the new gymnasium, while the dance which followed was held in the old gym. Music for the dance was provided by Fred Schnell's Commodores. The first dance, Laura, was reserved for the queen and her court. .fawza uqffman Czzest Queen finaly fginclfaeufef fpougfas ,auley 1 Sam, Jim fgpona lc! Spaufcfing . If a standard ring were adopted, a Ferguson graduate could immediately be recognized as such, regard- less ot his graduation date by his Class Ring. This year's committee did adopt a stand- ard ring after much deliberation. The ring which was chosen bore, as distinct symbols of Ferguson High School, engravings ot the tront doors of the school, the cypress trees, and a comet, and could be obtained both in all gold or in gold with a blue stone. The committee, composed of a boy and girl for each grade level, was headed by Melanie Marshall, chairman, and Mr. Cham- berlain, sponsor. prom committee The Prom Committee, composed entirely ot iuniors, has the responsibilty ot plan- ning the biggest and most lavish dance of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. Under the direction ot Jett Estes, chairman, and Mrs. Kurtz, sponsor, this year's Prom Committee transformed the new gymnasium into a beautiful oriental garden. ln the center ot the gym were placed a fountain ot chang- ing colors and a huge Japanese lantern. A walk with small oriental bridges encircled the dance floor. Guests entered the gym through an oriental torrie, a pagoda-like structure. Small Japanese lanterns and ming trees completed the decor. Students attend- ing the Prom received Japanese corsage tans as favors. These students render their services to school and community and, at the end of the year, receive certificates in recognition of these services. New members of the club are carefully trained and tested by those members who have already passed the required test to receive their membership cards. One of the most interesting Projection Club projects was the trip taken by thirty of its mem- bers to Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Canada, from March 19 to March 22. These students were accompanied by Mr. Watson, club sponsor, and his wife. Senior, Ron Pacino, won a free trip in a drawing held by members ot the club at a meeting on March 5. High spots of the trip in- cluded visits to Belle lsle, Greenfield Village, the industrial and the downtown sections of Detroit, and the River Rouge Ford plant, the largest auto- mobile plant in the world. The Ferguson High School Projection Club was one of the charter members of the Missouri State projection club Audio-Visual Service Clubs. This group held a convention at Ferguson on May 24 under the direction of Mr. Place, director of visual education tor the R-2 District. The Projection Club was also the first organization given accreditation by the Missouri State Board ot Education for high school graduation credit in practical arts. Members of the String Orchestra have the un- usual opportunity to study and perform music that covers more than four centuries of develop- ment. Works from the old masters serve as a basis for the study of the moderns. Our school is fortunate in that we do have a balanced string orchestra. One ot the most interesting exper- iences for its members was the trip to Weldon Springs and Wentzville, where it presented pro- grams to the student body. The string orchestra performs at the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert. It also takes part in the Ensemble Festi- val and the All-County Music Festival. Its mem- bers ioin selected members from the band to form the Concert Orchestra. -103- choir Cask Row: Ron Meade, Jay Petrea, Larry Willhite, Virgil Lamkin, Ron Jenkins, Bruce Beard, Winston Jones, Al Cool, Lyle Stamper, Gary Fathman, Larry Schilling. The Ferguson High School Choir, under the direction of John W. Owen, was composed main- ly of members of the second and fourth hour choir classes. Most of its members had been singing with the choir for one, two, and in some cases, three years. To these were added a fine group of sophomores. Choir members had the privilege of striving to artistically interpret the finest of choral music, both classic and con- temporary, The choir, along with the band and string or- chestra, presented the Christmas Concert on December lo. One of the most inspiring num- bers of this program was the Hallelujah Chorus from l-landel's Messiah, The choir also sang at the Rotary Club, the County Music Festival, the National Conference of the National Asso- ciation of Student Councils, and, in May, pre- sented their annual Spring Concert. ln December, the vocal music department, in coniunction with the dramatics department, pre- sented AmahI and the Night Visitors, a Christ- mas opera, by Cvian Carlo Menotti. The excellent presentation of this opera was warmly received by the student body and in other schools and churches in Ferguson and Florissant. The cast was: Amahl-Lynne Schuler, Mother-Rose Krueger, Ziane McCulloughg Kaspar-Bob Neel, Melchior-- Ron Meade, Balthazar-Gary Griffith, Virgil Lam- kin. The chorus included: Schilling, Farver, Werm- ke, Robinson, Zemer. Dave During the oy attending average, Nienaber, Hizer, Wilson, and Men- Patterson was the accompanist. year choir members earned points rehearsals maintaining at least an and participating in concerts, At the end of the school year, music letters were awarded to those with a high number of points and those who had shown a high degree of in- terest and ability. This year the Student Council decided to adopt an Alma Mater for Ferguson High School. In their search for a suitable one they found a song that Mr. Owen had written for an operetta that was presented here six years ago. A small group from the choir sang it for the Student Council who quickly adopted it for the school. -104- FERGUSON HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER Strong young voices in an anthem loudly now we raise, Long in justice, love, and duty, sounding out thy praise.
