4,1-if Page 25 The 247 graduates 967 underclassmen make up the student body. The 247 graduates now have a hope fulfilled - their Fenwick diplomas. They are growing to manhood. The underclass- men, still with their foibles and failings of boyhood, are working their way up. A joy to the heart of our patron To have thousands ot young people under the tutelage ot the Dominican Fathers was the ardent hope ot Bishop Fenwick. lt was not until about l8l2 that his proposed Col- lege ot St. Thomas ot Aquin was hnally completed tor the education ot the youth of Kentucky and surrounding states. The nurnloer who came to it was a great ioy to Father Fenwick the realization of a long-cherished dream. At one time it had an enrollment ot more than two hundred a large number tor that period. Within its walls many men ot note were educated, men who became well known in their professions. Among the most interest- ing tor Fenwick students are Abrahant Lincoln's school teacher, Zachariah Riney: and Jetterson Davis, president ct the Con- federate States of the South. JeFFerson Davis, as a boy, travelled on a pony all the way from the extreme south- western county ot Mississippi. iMr. Davis' recollections ot the school will he found on page 69 in the Studies sectioi' ot this bookl
