Their next encounters, in the Fenwick Iunior Tournament, netted them a 55-20 whitewash of St. Michael, and a loss at the hands of St. Patrick, 41 to 27. Four consecutive losses saw the Friars occupying the cellar as League cornpetition got under way, bowing to De Paul 49-31, to St. George 42-28, to St. Philip 53-35, and to Weber 30 to 25. Cantys thirteen points in the De Paul contest, and Barrett's fourteen in the encounter with St. Philip were the only highlights of the four clashes. Loyola was the first victim to fall before the Iuniors as they dropped the Ramblers in an exciting battle, 33 to 31, in which Barrett tallied for twenty points. St. Ignatius was the next to feel the sting of the Iuniors as they topped the lggies, 43 to 39, overcoming a halftime deficit to polish off their second League win. Iust about getting back on their feet again, the Friars were rudely jolted when they dropped the ensuing two games. The Tigers from Holy Trinity rolled over the Black and White, 61 to 34, while De Paul beat the lights for the second time, 36 to 29. Bounding back, the Iuniors trimmed St. George, 44 to 32, in a contest which saw Bill Barrett chalk up twenty points and tie the school free-throw record, set by Bill McElroy in 1945, with thirteen successful penalty tosses. Following a 60 to 50 licking at the hands of St. Philip, the Friars took their next three encounters, defeating Weber, 35 to 28, Loyola, 36 to 34 in a tight battle, and St. lgnatius, 40 to 36. Climaxing their season by losing to Holy Trinity, 50-33, the Iuniors wound up with a record reading six wins against eight losses. Continued from page 76 Topping all their other outstanding achievements, was the showing made by the Iunior and Senior teams in the important March meets. The Friars came through in traditional Fenwick style, taking the Invitational Prep Championship at Culver and the Catholic League Iunior Championship Meet at Loyola. Further honors were garnered when the Senior swimmers captured the Catholic League Senior Championship at Fenwick. ln the Iunior meet, promising Frosh-Soph swimmers such as Reg Darley, Dick Vfehman, and Bill Dunn, free-stylers, Ed Vertuno and Tom Hartmann, breaststrokers, and loe l-lapp, back- stroker, were impressive. lf the achievements of the lunior team are any indication of what to expect in the future, Catholic League rivals beware! For the l7th time in l8 years, the Friars took first place in the Catholic League Senior Title Meet, a feat that will probably never be equalled by anyone else and which clearly shows the superiority of Fenwick swimming teams. Feltrop, O.P., Alumni Association Advisor The spirit for which Fenwick is noted does not operate on a four year basis, terzninating with the seniors graduation. The truth zs, that it continues to be a vital characteristic in each and every one ot Fenwicks graduates. There are, at the present time, one thousand six hundred members of the Fenwick Alumni Association who annually support a widely varied program of activities. Each year, the Alumni sponsor three dances, an Alumni aolf meet, the Homecoming Football Game, the Basketball' Swimming' Rc nguet, the Communion Breakfast on Graduation day, and a basketball aame between the Grads and the Friar Varsity. ln cddition to these major events, the Alurnnis schedf ule calls for a social gathering on the 'irst Tuesday of each month However, during the past year, this list of activities hos been extended to include an annual retreat and the publishing of a auarterly newspaper named the 'Fenwick Alumnus . The editorfinfchiet of the new oraan is Robert Wannamaker 712. Supervising this extensive program is the responsibility of the Association s tour officers, Bernard Masterson '35, pres., lohn McCauley 33, vice-pres: Robert Cooney treas.g and Denis Crowley '45 sec., and the Reverend V, S. ljeltrop, OP., advisor. Santo Domingo. Although the activity has existed only three years, it is now a firmly es- tablished senior scout unit. ln the past year, important strides have been mode to strengthen and extend the ships organization, especially in the field of adult leadership. A ships committee headed by Mr. Iohn Kern has been established to set up a permanent program of activities for the boys, To carry out the committee's plans is the job of Robert O'Connor, a Fenwick alumnus, who has been recently come rnissioned Captain of the Santo Domingo, The program of adult student activity is coordinated by Father M. S. Scannell, OP., Ship Chaplain. Like all the other senior scouts, Fenwicks Sea Scouts follow the national four point program A indoor, service, out- door and social. With a complete Complement of adult lead- ers and an ever increasing crew of scouts, the Santo Domingo is now prepared to fully participate in every aspect of the senior scouting program. At the present time, the Sea Scouts at Fenwick are con- centrating their efforts on accumulating charts and other infor- mation pertaining to navigation on the sea, with only a few rowing or sailing trips in the Lake Michigan harbors mixed in. However, in the future they plan to broaden the scope of their activities. The Reverend M. M. Scunnell, O.P Sea Scout Chaplain , X :Z lla, -I ,:'3 l El . .-,,. 4.
