The Plan requires that students obtain positions that are some- what related to the fields they are majoring in; thus the Fenn student is thoroughly oriented into the world of his particular field upon graduation. William C. Davis 1957 Fanfare Dedication To William C. Davis The day of June 13, 1956, brought a saddening blow to Fenn College. Professor William C. Davis, a valuable and distinguished member of the faculty of the School of Engineer- ing, passed away suddenly. Professor Davis received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Hiram College and had done graduate work at Western Reserve and at Ohio State. He came to Fenn in 1928 as chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering, but since that department was barely in existence at that time, he filled in by teaching chemistry and math. He led in the planning of the curriculum of this department and developed the present Electrical Engineering Laboratory, much of the equipment of which he built himself. He was never too busy to concern himself with the problems of his students, depart- ment members, or alumni, and his home was frequently opened to these for group meetings or individual advice. Professor Davis was a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, a senior member of the Institute of Radio Engineers, and served as a consultant in industry. His influence, therefore, spread far beyond the College. The community, as well as the College, has suffered an irreparable loss as a result of his death. Professor Davis planned the new Electrical Engineering Laboratory which will be located on the West Campus. The Faculty Public Relations Committee is considering naming it after him as an appropriate and lasting memorial for him. In all his years at Fenn, the students, alumni, and faculty of Fenn have known Mr. Davis as an administrator, teacher, adviser, and friend. The staff of the 1957 “Fanfare” joins all these in paying tribute to one of Fenn’s really great teachers. To William C. Davis we respectfully dedicate this volume. Fenn Tower is the vertical campus located at East 24th and Euclid Avenue. Recent improvements have increased the facilities for both students and administration in the Fenn Tower building, which now houses classrooms, laboratories, student lounges, administration offices, men’s dormitory facilities, the library, cafeteria, gymnasium and the Ellwood H. On Prospect Avenue next to the Y.M.C.A. there is also one other campus structure. The buildings visible in this picture are the Claude Foster Engineering Building, Fenn Tower, Ohio Motors Building, and White Apartments. The 500-car Fenn parking lot appears also. This mod- ern building houses the Mechanical Engineering Department with a fully equipped laboratory as well as three floors of classrooms and offices. Ohio Motors Building The Ohio Motors Building pur- chased in 1953 is now referred to as the “West Campus.” At present there are six classrooms being used there to handle the increased enrollment. WORK STUDY PLAN CO-OP PLAN FENN SERVICE FENN INDUSTRY PROFESSIONS BUSINESS ADMISTRATION aoyret ire ee” Brooks Earnest, M.S.C.E. Director of Public Relations and Development Once a stranger to Fenn, Murray M. Davidson has already established himself as Assistant to the President, replacing former Vice-President Taylor. In addition to supervising public relations, alumni relations, and the capital fund campaign, he is striving to carry out a development program which was started several years ago by the Board of Trustees under Dr. Thomas. So, when you see and _ hear everyone talking about the man who is behind the construction and purchase of campus facilities, look no further — it’s Murray M. Davidson. Office of the President From early morning until the wee hours of the night, President G. Brooks Earnest is busy at work. Not only does he spend his time handling the personal and educational problems of Fennites, but he also manages to take an active part in engineering and civic organizations. After graduating in 1927 from Case and serving on its faculty for twenty years, President Earnest continued his administrative duties at Fenn as head of the School of Engineering, furthering the plans of the late Dr. C. V. Thomas. Two years later the Board of Trustees made one of their wisest decisions. Now, as the third president of Fenn College, President Earnest is again striving to attain another goal — “The Fenn For The Future” program. f Murray M. Davidson Charles J. Dean of Cooperative Education Co-Op Department Through “trial and error” on-the-job experience, the period of permanent job uncertainty after graduation is lessened or entirely avoided by the Fenn graduate. The somewhat difficult adjustment to the business world has already been made through Co-Op experience. Fenn, being located in the center of an area of a variety of service and civic institutions and industries, is indeed ideally suited for its operation as a cooperative education college. Through the help of its three coordinators and the Dean of Co-oper- ative Training, the student, upon graduation, proudly realizes that he can now interpret basic and specialized knowledge in the light of the realities of present day life. son Robert B. The sorority co- sponsors the Coronation Ball, and later during the winter, sponsors the annual Porthole Dance. Banquets, hay rides, picnics, and socials add to a Beta’s year of fun and devotion to the principles of fine character, high scholarship, and comradeship. Chartered in 1937, Gamma Nu Sigma became a local sorority on February 24th of that year. Loyalty to Fenn, promotion of good scholarship, fellowship, and an active interest in problems of today are the aims of the members of this group. The carrying out of this pledge can be illustrated by the fact that you will find an ITL in almost any activity and organization at Fenn. This group annually sponsors a “Highland Fling” dance and a banquet, along with numerous other social activities throughout the year. Iota Eta, chartered in 1926, has the distinction of being the first fraternity on the Fenn Campus. The cooperation of my staff excelled anything I had ever dreamed of. They were only too willing to assist. My special gratitude goes to Larry Kornokovich, Dan Sabol, and Mel Zentak who headed up the three staff departments. I owe so very much to Professor Vance Chamberlin for all his encouragement and hope. He worked behind the scenes, but I always knew he was there and that he could be counted on for help at any time. The theme of this year’s book is his work. Dr. H. Robert Gemmer gave me such a big lift in getting the yearbook started. Louise Kulka was always very patient and helpful whenever I approached her office in need of some photographs. Roy Seitz and Ray Libengood of Cleveland Engraving spent many hours orienting me and my staff in the way of making a layout to the end process of making the engravings. The printing of any publication is of the utmost importance. My special thanks goes to Robert Coe of Western Reserve Press who went out of his way to give Fenn his service and cooperation. John Reith of Mueller Art Cover was pleasant to work with and ready to be of assistance. Frank Dugan of Jean Sardu Studios was overly helpful and had many suggestions to offer. Robert Bank and Sid Mendelson are worthy of praise for their photography work. They were swell people to get along with and work with. President Earnest, The Administration, Faculty, and Trustees who cooperated in the attempt to have recent pictures in the yearbook. The sororities and fraternities were willing to gamble as I took them back to having individual pictures of their group. Jack Endlich spent an untold number of hours taking, develop- ing, and printing these pictures. Before I close, I would like to deeply express my thanks and appreciation to my father, Theodore Gymer. My father is in advertising and without his world of knowledge, cheerfulness, and willingness to assist me, I would never have embarked upon this venture as yearbook editor. May this book provide you with lasting memories and may you open its cover often in the years to come.
