ibecbca fion K I L L E D A C TI O N . . . 10,680 American soldiers in the Korean War. ln lune, l950, a war broke out in Korea. This was not a small civil war in an un- important little country . . . this was a United Nations war in the fight against Communist ag- gression. Americans have been fighting and dying for a year in a country 6,000 miles away. Why are they there . . . do they know what they are fighting for? These men are fighting to preserve our democracy. No longer are they carefree boys but men protecting the world from forces which would rent it asunderg forces which seek to destroy the principles upon which our country was founded. Principles of freedom, equality, and iustice. The Iohns, Ioes, and Mikes who are dying on those far off battlefields are very young to die, but life is only a pure flame and we live by an invisible sun within us. The flame of their lives has been snuffed out but the sun that burned so brightly within them will continue to shine upon us, reminding us that they gave their minds and hearts and lives to a search for peace in a troubled world. As long as we continue to live in freedom it is our duty to cherish, guard, and believe in that freedom which was paid for with human lives . To all the brave young men who have died in the Korean War to make the world safe for democracy . . . we dedicate our Courier.

DAVID HOLMES MARIE MCCUTCHEON MARY C. OWENS NORA B. STEVENSON Not Pictured MYRA WHITWORTH Many students must have seen DAVID HOLMES and not realized thai he was our swimming coach. Mr. Holmes came to Fenger from Austin High School in 1947. Although he was at Fenger only three years his presence will be missed. Fenger has again bid farewell to a teacher who marched from the Old Curtis to the New Fenger. MARIE MCCUTCI-IEON was assigned to Fenqer in 1922, taught until 1938 and was loaned to the Bureau of Curriculum for nine years. She returned to Fenger in 1947 and resigned in December, 1950. Many people will miss the quiet understanding personality of Marie McCutcheon. MARY C. OWENS was transferred to Fenger from Harper High School in 1939. She was a prominent figure in our language department, and flavored Spanish grammar with stories of the beauties of Spain and Mexico. All who knew Miss Owens were fond ot her and hope she is enjoying her well deserved rest. One of Fenger's most colorful personalities has retired. NORA B. STEVEN- SON transferred to Fenger from Lindblom High School in 1932. The Mount Vernon Branch will not be the same without Miss Stevenson's quaint humor and friendly manner. We lost another fine teacher this year, MYRA WHITWORTI-I. Mrs. Whit- worth was assigned to Fenger in 1926. She too injected a novel twist into her Spanish classes by teaching songs and telling stories of the places she had visited. We all shall miss her enthusiastic teaching spirit. jA052 Ao alle QPU? 5
