SAOJQ Ao 61118 .gzrue Each year one must witness the retirement of teachers who have given the best years ot their lives in molding the characters ot the future leaders of our society. We dedicate this page in honor of their service. Mr. Sayres Garlick came to Eenger in September, l92l, and was assigned to teaching chemistry and math. Later, he was delegated to organize a commercial geography department and during that period wrote a text book concerning this field. In October, 1914, Mrs. Vera Wertheim arrived to take her place as an English teacher. While with us, she organized the public speaking classes and trained students in delivering orations on various occasions. These two teachers are among the few still remaining on our staff who had the experience of marching from our old building Know Curtis Schooll to this magnificent new home of Fenger. A request for a band master was answered by Mr. William Burnham who had been a member of both Arthur Pryar's and Iohn Phillip Sousa's bands as they toured the world. Mr. Burn- ham ioined our faculty in September, 1926. Miss Winitred Gallagher, transferring from Tilden Tech., became a member of our faculty in September, 1937, and was appointed as an assistant principal in charge of our Mt. Vernon Branch where the first year of high school is offered to relieve the student load at the main building. Through a vacancy in our English department, Mrs. Edna Lewerenz came to us from Phillips High School in November, 1939. She was engaged in doing special work in remedial English. if? KICKS AND KAPERS le Cl,ClfLAg FACULTY VERSUS CHAMPS 'IO Many times we over- look the silent partner behind our activities, the faculty advisor. Their sincere and whole-hearted co-operation with our social en- tertainments, assemblies, and ac- tivities which they sponsor has helped put Fenger out in front. Not to be out done by the students, the faculty has many activities of its own. One of the highlights this year was a variety show, Kicks and Kapers, given with the assistance of the P.T.A. ln addition, social gather- ings in the form of teas given at intervals, offer an opportunity for discussions of matters of mutual interest. Fun and competition was the theme of the male mem- bers of the faculty who formed a bowling team and report many evenings of enjoyment.
