me icafion In recognition and appreciation of valuable services he has rendered to our FENGER HIGH SCHOOL, the COURIER STAFF of this 1950 YEAR BOOK judicially dedicates this volume to QPF? . , 6 who has faithfully served our school as Engineer-Custodian for many eventful years. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mr. Beals came to Chicago in his early childhood and received his education in our Chicago Public School System. Being the son of an engineer, he received his apprenticeship under his father at the old Calumet High School. He successfully passed the engineer's examination and received his first appointment at the Hold- en Elementary School. From the Holden School, he was transferred to the Clark Elementary School and in lanuary, 1927, he received the honor of being appointed as Engineer-Custodian of our magnificent new Fenger High School building. One of his first projects was to prepare a plan for landscaping our grounds around the building. ln co-opera- tion with Mr. Schacht who was then prin- cipal, a campaign was launched and the student body provided the necessary funds. As a talent scout, Mr. Beals showed his ability by producing the Variety Shows which placed Fenger out in front. He sponsored and trained a stage crew chos- en from the boys who were interested in this field. From the funds raised by rend- ering these talent reviews, stage equip- ment was purchased and We now possess one of the best equipped stages in our school system. In addition to his busy pro- gram at school, our engineer found time to affiliate with numerous civic organiza- tions in this community and was placed on many important committees where his valuable experience was a beneficial fac- tor. As a hobby, Mr. Beals is an ardent dahlia fan and spends his week ends and vacation periods at his summer home at Flint Lake, Indiana where he pro- duced many prize winning dahlias for which he has received many ribbons and awards. HARRY E. BEALS Engineer - Custodian

KICKS AND KAPERS le Cl,ClfLAg FACULTY VERSUS CHAMPS 'IO Many times we over- look the silent partner behind our activities, the faculty advisor. Their sincere and whole-hearted co-operation with our social en- tertainments, assemblies, and ac- tivities which they sponsor has helped put Fenger out in front. Not to be out done by the students, the faculty has many activities of its own. One of the highlights this year was a variety show, Kicks and Kapers, given with the assistance of the P.T.A. ln addition, social gather- ings in the form of teas given at intervals, offer an opportunity for discussions of matters of mutual interest. Fun and competition was the theme of the male mem- bers of the faculty who formed a bowling team and report many evenings of enjoyment.
