THE HISTORY OF THE 4A CLASS This year, in accordance with our theme, we wish to give you a brief account of how the pres- ent class members displayed excellent character throughout their four years of high school. Our story begins in the year of the World's Fair, 1933, when these graduates were merely enthusiastic freshmen ! With gleaming faces and eager hearts they began their high school careers. Among the many who were members of Curtis Junior High before becoming a part of Fenger were Rose Szabo who won the posture medal in competition with the entire school, and Ellen Jensen, who had charge of the poetry and news stories for the Curtis News staff. Mount Vernon Branch was also a Junior High when the students were 1B's and boasted of a grand newspaper of which John Baer, present co- editor of the Courier, was cashier. Florence Elm and Warren Barnes, also on the Courier staff, were the news representatives for the girls and boys respectively. The present 4A's who are from Burnside Branch were a part of Hirsch Junior High before the Junior High system was abolished, and Fenger, being unable to accommodate all the new people from these schools, had created for it three branches: Burnside, Curtis, and Mount Ver-non, the following semester. Burnside received ap- proximately 200 students, some of whom imme- diately became leaders of their group. Robert Falkenthal not only took charge of the Fenger News sales for his room but for the entire branch. Mount Vernon 1A's remained when it became a branch and Edward Nelson was chosen B. A. A. representative for his room. Marguerite Clark, one of the News editors, and Don Hofstra, who is a valuable player on our Southside Section Cham- pion team, also came from this branch. As sophomores, the graduates continued to dis- play ability. Catheri-ne Stangle and members of this year's Courier staff--Harriet Johnson and Shirley Young-proved worthy G. A. A. repre- 'sentatives and Elsie Nickel won first prize and Clarabel Lundgren a Courier honorable mention in a Quill and Scroll contest. Edward Hawkins became Courier representa- tive for his room. He began early training. When they advanced still further and became juniors, they began to joi-n clubs and after-school activities. William Casson, Warren Hansen, Theodore Koziocas, and Robert and William Mc- Gaghie were admitted to the Hi-Y and Florence Elm and Pollyanna Bergman to the Tri-Hi-Y. It was about this time also that Harriet Nilsen carried away the medal for having the best pos- ture of all the girls. Robert Perry, Marguerite Clark, Dorothy Claw- son, Mildred Carleton, and Jane Dalenberg be- came members of the News staff and later were admitted to the Quill and Scroll. As the senior year commenced, William Mc- Gaghie was elected president, Pollyanna Berg- Page 8 man became vice-president, present Courier staff members Mariella Fraser and Marjorie Carlson became secretary and treasurer, all of whom proved their efficiency as leaders. Edward Ged- goud showed his literary ability by winning first prize in a Courier Literary Contest, and Jane Dal- enberg wrote the 4B class poem and won a prize in the G. C. S. P. G. Contest. The Courier has gained these last two people. Oicers of the G. A. A. and B. A A. respec- tively are Harriet Nilson, president, and Shirley Young, vice-president, Richard Vander Meer, sec- retary, and Rudy Mucha, who has scored the larg- est number of points of any football player in the city, vice-president Arthur Goucher, William McGaghie, Arthur McConnachie, Roger Buchholz, Amy Joyce Haag, Nancy Hess, and Jane Dalenberg were the stu- dents admitted to the N-ational Honor Society this year. The society pays particular attention to the character of the persons admitted. The last semester began, and Robert Perry was elected mayor in a close campaign in which Roger Buchholz was his opponent. Both also were selected for the Courier staff. I-During this term, Edward Sternberg was chos- en president of the National Honor Society, Lil- lian Kluses, vice-president, Astrid Jordahl, secre- tary, and Mildred Carleton, treasurer, all are members of the Courier Staff now. Nancy- Hess, Amy Joyce Haag, Arthur Gou- cher, Clarabel Lundgren, Astrid Jordahl, and Irene Rout.have succeeded in being members of the Phorex for seven semesters and will receive pins at graduation. This semester's Courier heads are Mildred Carle- ton and John Baer. Others chosen for the staff are: Warren Johnson, Melvin Brandsma, Russell Hill, and Arthur McConnachie, for business falso active. members of the Hi-YJ, Robert Nelson, Robert Swanson and Olaf Lofstrand, cartoonists, Victor Balaban, B. A. A., Margaret Aiken, finan- cial, Irene Rout, who had a 'part in Bewitching Betty, and Edith Darvin, interviews, and Dorothy Clawson, publicity and circulation fPage editor on the News last semesterj. Graduates on the News Staff are Marguerite Clark and Warren Hansen, assignment editors, Geraldine Bannert, managing editor, Clare Raat- jes and Virginia Wieringa, page editors, George Murdock, photographer, and Kenneth Zollinger, assistant sports editor. In summing up the life of the class we have tried to bring out our theme, character. The members have built strong characters and deem every step on the way valuable, whether it were easy or diihcult.
