FAYETTEVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY CONGRATULATES THE CLASS OF 1981 DEEDS NOT WORDS The Latin word Res Non Verba translated means Deeds Not Words. During the 113 years history of Fayetteville State University, this university has lived up to those high ideals. What began in 1867 as the Howard School in a frame building on Gillespie Street has grown today into a full pledge comprehen- sive university serving the cultural and edu- cational needs of the Southeastern part of North Carolina. In 1969, the college was des- ignated a regional university and its name was changed to Fayetteville State University. Fayetteville State University became a con- stituent institution of the University of North Carolina in 1972 and began graduate studies in the fall of 1980. Words alone could not accomplish this feat. The deeds of the dedicated people who have been a part of this great institution have al- lowed Fayetteville State University to stand up to the high principals it was build on: Res Non Verba Deeds Not Words.
