PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE PRESroENT FAYETTEVILLE. N. C. 28301 PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE December 7, 1970 As a University we have reached another plateau in our journey to the sun — the Commencement of the class of 1971. In a real sense this yearbook belongs to this class, because it is their graduation. My message this year is thus addressed specifically to the class of 1971. Whether you like it or not each member of this class is cast in the role of a leader and each is going to be expected to lead. We have done all we can to prepare you for your new role . We hope the foundation you have built here is firm and secure enough to support any life structure you plan to build for yourself. Commencement Day for you may be likened unto the period of develop- ment in the life of a baby bird. When the parents feel it is sufficiently strong to fly, they push it out of the nest so it can try its new wings. The class of 1971 will have this experience on Commencement Day. We believe you will fly. You may falter at times, you may even have a few rough bumps before you are finally able to soar into the sky with the smoothness and serenity of a bird, confident of its wings and its own power, but this will come with constant effort and faith in your own ability, not only just to achieve, but to excel. I challenge you, therefore, not to be satisfied with simple achievement wherever you find yourself beyond this day, but always work to excel. For those of us who remain in the University community, let us dare to accept the same challenge for ourselves. Charles A Lyons, Jr. President

ATION TO DAUGHTER Mrs. Evans gave willingly of her services from 1950 to 1970 as clerk-typist in the Registrar ' s Office. She attended New York University. Her daughter |oined the FSU staff in 1969 as an instructor in Sociology. At the beginning of the academic year, 1970-1971, she became acting chairman of the Sociology Department. Her academic attainments are as follows: A.B. — Shaw University: M. Ed. — University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has done further gradu- ate study at UNC at Chapel Hill. This mother and daughter team has proven themselves to be an asset to the University. Since they always wear a smile, this causes the student body to smile also. Mrs. Al- ice C. Evans and Miss Edwinia Evans will always be re- membered by the warm smile which they display. • !; With deep esteem, we dedicate the FAYETTEVILLIAN to The Evanses. They have been a light unto our path and a lamp unto our feet in all times of need. The strength of your character and depth of your thought leave with us a never-to-be forgotten image of the best in humanity.
