Mr. Ross Serves Faithfully In the operation of the schools of Fayetteville the central figure is Mr. C. Reid Ross, the Superintendent of Fayetteville City Schools. The effectiveness of the Fayetteville school system in largely due to the excellent leader- ship of Mr. Ross. He is deeply involved in all phases of public education in Fayetteville. De- spite his busy schedule, Mr. Ross finds time to come in contact with many students by speaking at assemblies and awards programs and attend- ing FHS sports events. Mr. Ross has served as head of the Fayette- ville school system since 1951. Before that year, he attended the University of North Carolina, receiving his B.A. and M.A. degrees. Mr. Ross first served the schools of Lenoir County as both teacher and principal. He then became Super- intendent of Harnett County schools. From Harnett County, Mr. Ross came to Fayetteville where his diligent, capable service has inspired admiration and respect. Despite his busy schedule, Mr. Ross takes a break for the LaFamac photographer. Attending a basketball game at FHS, Mr. Ross enthusiastically supports the Bulldogs. Mr. Ross dictates a letter to his secretary, Mrs. Breeden. 23

Leading Citizens Compose Board Of Education The interest and concern of the people in our community for the students of Fayetteville Senior High are evident in the fine work of the board of education. The men and women who serve on the board are of the highest caliber. They are qualified and willing to accept the im- mense managerial and financial responsibilities placed upon them. Under their direction, Fayetteville Senior High School maintains high standards of academic achievement. In addition to its regular responsibilities, the board of education has this year faced the great challenge of planning a new high school in Fayetteville. Assistant Superintendents DR. MAYLON E. McDONALD Dr. McDonald, Assistant Superintendent in Charge of Instruction, devotes his time to im- proving the overall instructional program in the city schools. His job includes helping to select the instructional staff for the schools of Fay- etteville. In addition, he works in the areas of vocational education and special education for the handicapped. A graduate of Wake Forest College, Dr. McDonald received his masters de- gree and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. MR. BERT ISHEE Mr. Ishee serves as Assistant Superintendent in Charge of Special Education and Research. The program in special education of the Fayetteville city school system is one of the broadest in North Carolina. Mr. Ishee did his undergraduate work at Mississippi College and received his masters degree from the University of North Carolina. Mr. Ishee came to Fayetteville as principal of Alexander Graham Junior High School. After several years, he took a leave of absence to complete his work on his doctoral degree at the University of North Carolina MR. ZOLLY L. BOWDEN Mr. Bowden, the Assistant Superintendent in Charge of Business, manages the cafeteria program and supervises the purchasing of equipment for the schools. Also, he directs the program for building and maintaining school plants and grounds. Mr. Bowden served as a teacher, principal, and supervisor in other North Carolina school systems before coming to serve Fayetteville city schools. He is a graduate of Elon College and earned his masters degree from the University of North Carolina. 24
