The required courses, English II through English IV, include ex- tensive study of grammar. sentence structure, spelling and word study, composition. and literature. The elective courses -advanced composition, creative writing, speech, drama, and journalism-offer specialized help in speaking and writ- ing. Miss Emma Lee Davis, English IV and advanced composition teacher, received her A.B. degree from East Carolina and her M.A. degree from Stetson University. She is assistant sponsor for the National Honor Society. Mrs. Mary Shuler McMillan, English and Basic Mathematics teacher, received her A.B. degree from W.C.U.N.C. The vocal music courses include instruction in breath control, tone placement, voice classification. diction, vocal techniques, note reading. scales, intervals, and rhythm, while instrumental music instruction courses include technical material to enable the student to advance his performance level. Practice is held during school hours and many times out of school for performances given throughout the year. Mr. Forrest T. Ray, Clee Club and Chorus director, graduated from Westminster Clmir College with a B.M. degree. Mr. William Francis Adcox, instructor of Instrumen- tal Music, graduated from UNC with A.B. and M.E. degrees. He sponsors all band activities.
