V Y.. - ' ,- .. . N- , , I TRODUCTIO During the American Revolution Thomas Paine coined an expression which aptly applies to these days- These are the times that try inen's souls. Today we are worry- ing about ration points, substitutes, our privatious. and we are trying to buy VVar Bonds with money saved from candy. chewing gum, and new clothes so that our boys who are fighting may have the things they need. After all, thes-e times that try our souls have their good points. XVe find that We can do without many so-called essentials, and that discovery gives satisfaction. because we realize that these things were doing Without-the many parties. pleasure trips, and even night programs at school-save gasoline and electricity. Hence. we know that these things are not just privations-they're privileges. lt is a privilege to be able to do without these luxuries and to make sacrifices to prove that vve're all in it too. XVe Wouldn't be true if we failed to record this history of our class during this eventful year. We feel that we have a grave responsibility resting on our shoulders- that of producing a yearbook that gives a true history of our Alma Mater during the year 19423-44. VVe realize that learning, taking part in necessary activities. and develop- ing ourselves into strong men and women, though not so glamorous, is as much a patriotic duty as the duties that our men and women are performing as they serve in the Army, Navy, and Marines. Therefore, as loyal Americans. let's take our job seriously, whatever it is, and do our best. That's the way we can defeat the Axis and preserve America for the Amer- ican way of life. Vtfith all thes-e things in mind and after considering our part in th war. this year for the theme of our annual We have chosen NVe're All ln lt. f , 1 ' --ii ve, Ct:rf'.!i:,r!,1s-A: Ccap-ifv 5'-'LJ 5512 U9 TVB' fri 3101 CEN?-1: ticeiofni L1YJV-ity 1 Y A -- --- f-v-- 4 e nf 55' QUHHEMIUN 'IM une. They take time out from war and peer into the future, trying to picture what our country will be like after this confiict-what new methods of travel will appear, what wondrous achievements in science will startle the world, what improvements in living and ad- vancements in culture will emerge. Cn every side, moreover, there is talk of a wonder- ful utopia. a country based completely on the four freedoms. Yes, wonderful to dream of-but how to transform this dream into reality is a task more difhcult even than winning the war. America knows what it takes to win the war-men, guns, planes, tanks, shipsg but what is the answer to winning the peace? The answer is Gd'IlC'lll'l0Il, complete. unbiased. For with education shall come not only knowledge, but also tolerance, discipline, understanding, brotherhood co-opera- tion, a respect for the rights of others. and a true sense of values. Education will decide whether this war, too, has been in vain, ln truth, education is the hope of the world. Thus the destiny of America is being shaped in the classrooms of today. Never has so much depended on so many, for today's youth is 'ttomorrow's America. Newton Robertson, Jr. iii' . fy? . Our history-making dates back to September 1940, when we were the first ninth graders to begin their high school career in our new school building. We chose for our otiicers this year Kate Broadfoot as President: Tommy Jordan, Vice President: and Susan Tolar, Secretary and Treasurer. During our second year we were called Juniors because then the students of the graduating class were only eleventh graders. Our most outstanding achievement of the year was to prepare the Junior-Senior Prom. This occasion we had looked forward to a long time and enjoyed immensely. Betty Boone was our President. The other officers were Georgia Olive, Vice-President and Edmund Dogget, Secretary-Treasurer. The marshals for commencement were chosen from our class this year. Georgia Olive was chief marshal. Her assistants were Kate Broadfoot, Jean Huske, Tommy Jordan, Harvey Oliver, John Pate, Stuart Verdery, Jack Woodell, and Susan Tolar. The next year we had the honor and responsibility of publishing the LaFa'n1c1c. Georgia Olive was chosen Editor-in-Chief and Rodger Derby was Business Manager until he left in February: then Bertram Fleishman carried on. With Miss Black, our adviser, and a very capable staff, we put out a book which many people said was good. Our class oflieers were Tommy Jordan, President: John Crawford, Vice-President: Kate Broad- foot, Secretary: and Susan Tolar, Treasurer. The otiicers of the student body were Jack Viloodell, President: Newton Robertson, Vice-President: and Charles Collins, Secretary-Treasurer. This year we all helped in the naming of a flying fortress of our Air Corps. Our school ac- quired this honor by meeting the necessary quota of VVar Bond sales. We named it the LaFamac after our year book. Many of our classmates and friends left school after Dec. 7, 1941, to join the armed forces of our country and are now to be found in all parts of the world. We are proud of these boys and hope to see them all after this horrible unpleasantness is over. Eighty-one members of our class graduated in 1943, but a few are back with us as members of the twelfth grade this year. Several of our class were the fortunate recipients of honors at the 1943 commencement. VVe wish them similar luck again! For our class officers this year, we have chosen John Crawford, President: John Pate, Vice- President: Georgia Olive, Secretary: and John Ruskell, Treasurer. Steve Nimock is President of the Student Body: Harold Threatt, ViceePresident: Peggy Moffitt, Secretary: and Phil Johnson, Treasurer. The Editorein-Chief of the Lt1Fumac this year is Louise ,Silerrill The Business Manager is shPaul Moyle. We hope to put out a book that will be the best yet. Now as we are in our last year of high school, we look back on yesterday when We were only Freshmen who looked up to the Seniors and wondered if we would ever reach that exalted state. As graduation approaches, we realize that it is called commencement because it is really the be- ginning of the most important phase of our lives. These rooms which we have entered and occupied for four years have been the scenes of memorable events. These memories will link us together pleasantly as we go out to seek our various fortunes in this wide, wide world. Nancy Price, Historian TXYEN'l'Y'FtiI'lI Last 111 and Testalnent The 1944 Seniors of the Fayetteville High School, being of sound mind and body realizing tiat their remaining days at are few. now make their last will and testament. Qecfion I To Mr. Sisk we leave our appreciation for his unending efforts to encourage in us the basic educational ideals of To Mr. Harrill we bequeath our gratitude for his invaluable aid in forming the many high standards of conduct and learning that we have acquired during our high school years. To our teachers we leave deep thanks for making an adventure out of four years of study and for advising us so aptly in many of our extra-curricular activities. Qettion 2 To the entire class of '45 we, the present-day seniors, fondly turn over our own product of toil and inspiration, The Teen-Age Club, with many wishes for its continued growth and success. To the boys in FHS. we leave a yardstick for beauty. Measure your heart-beat to the 1944 classic beauty-the burnished-gold of Eleanor Pender's hair, the appeal in Katherine Boones eyes. the gaiety of Isobel Autry's smile, the versatility of Anna Katherine Pinkstoirathe charm of Louise-gigjill, and the engaging personality of Mary Fields Jones. To the girls of the class of '45 we, the seniors of '44 leave the happy thought of a beau who is the successful merger of .Iohn Crawford, Jack Sanderford, and Gene McDonald and add our mutual regret that such a being can be only mythical. I, Steve Nimocks, leave my qualities for representing the school with poise and distinctive ability to Bob Mc-Coy. with assurance that he will ably carry on the good work. I, Nancy Price, do leave my wholesome height to petite Jane Paton. I, Paul Moyle, do will and bequeath my flair for managing current business affairs to Malloy Owen who does so well in history with past events that I'm sure he can ably handle the job on up-to-date material. I, Georgia Olive, do will my leadership in so many of the school activities to Peggy Mothtt, for I know that she will unselfishly devote as much time and effort as I did. I, John Pate, do bequeath my skillful carrying out of numerous intricate basketball plays to George Crumbley, with confidence that it will be well used for FHS. next season. We, the members of the graduating class, leave our appreciation to Phil Johnson for his sonorous voice and our thanks for the many highly enjoyable times he has given us by dis- playing his talent. I, Eppie Stragala, do hereby leave my ability to look charmingly collegiate at all times to whistle-evoking Winnie Joyner. I, Jack Woodell, do bequeath my fine scholarship standing, stamina and leadership ability to Newton Robertson. 'X We, the members of the elite J. C. Club, do bequeath our modesty and willingness to share the spotlight and honors to any combination of equally humble seniorseto-be. We, the Senior boys who have so willingly and unselfishly responded to our country's call. do will our patriotic zeal to the members of next year's class with the hope that they will answer in any way they may be needed. Fayetteville students have been aware of their responsibility and have been eager to do everything possible to ttlwack the attack and to lick the Axis. The .Junior High math classes in 111411 under the leadership of Mrs. Dash began the sale of De- fense Stamps as soon as they were made available to the public. Since Pearl Harbor the stu- dents of the two schools have conducted four big drives to sell War Bonds and Stamps. ln 15111- -12 Mrs. Simmerman's and Mrs. Newberry's freshman algebra classes conducted the drive with an attractive booth in the hall. ln 11-142-43 the high school sold enough bonds to buy a flying fortress l ' l XVUC1 was named the Lflfyfllllllf' tpictured above1. This drive was introduced by Mr. Tom Hunter. directed by Mrs. Harden, teacher of vocal music, and wholeheartedly supported by the whole school. ln the same year the students conducted a most successful drive for scrap metal and rubber. This fall in the Third War Loan drive, conducted by Miss Gueth, we sold 3152511511 worth of War Bonds. Mr, Sisk has asked every homeroom to nialie monthly reports on the purchase of stamps and bonds by students and teachers. Though the average student does not have too many ttuarters. we are buying stamps just the same.
