During the next few years he taught school or practiced law until elected to the superin- tendency of the Fayetteville Graded School in 1878 For ten successful years he served after which he accepted the superintendency of the Charlotte Schools On February 14 1888 he was presented in recognition of his services by the people of Fayetteville with a gold watch which he still carries and uses in the direction of his daily tasks For twenty-five years he served the city of Charlotte as superintendent of schools only recently retiring to serve in a less exacting position after so many years of arduous service It is said of Mr Graham that he has in peace as many Firsts ' as North Carolina has in war He was the first man in the state to place high school studies in a graded school-at Fayetteville in 1878 This was the first public free school from which pupils entered the State' University without conditions He was the first man who took women to the State University.
