Coach Vandergriff speaks: The 1952 football season was one of the hardest ever played by a Fayetteville team. Not only were our out-of-state opponents strong as usual, but the District opponents were much stronger. Siloam Springs showed a fine, hard running backfield, but our punt and kick-off returns were so outstanding, they carried us to a 25-6 victory. Springdale showed surprising strength in our second game of the year. It was a game of striking contrasts. In the second quarter of the game, both teams scored an aggregate of 46 points. We scored 32 points to their 14. In contrast, there wasn't a point scored in the whole last half. It was also in great contrast to our Siloam Spring's game, in that we scored primarily through the air, while against Siloam Springs we only tried one pass. The final score was 38-20. Against Subiaco we were weakened somewhat by injuries and illness, but were defeated by a hard charging and hard tackling band of Trojans, 20-19. Tom Robinson , Larry Head Don Evans Our Harrison game was somewhat easier than our first three games. We outlasted them to rhe tune of 32-14. Our only Oklahoma rival turned out to be one of the finest teams ever to play on Harmon Field. The Tulsa Central Braves out classed us in all departments except in spirit, and won 32-0, Van Buren, one of our arch-rivals, was a little weak rliis year and in a last half splurge we beat them by the score of 40-6. We continued to dominate a much larger team when we beat Springfield, Missouri for the third year in a row, after a very hard-fought battle. The score was 26-20. For the first time in four years we finally beat the Ioplin lfagles, Our homecoming was very beautiful to watch, Queen Virginia Stapleton was very regal in her white gown and royal robe escorted by Co-captain Norman Powers and crowned by Co-captain Larry Trammel. Our game, with always strong Ioplin, was just as fine. XVe emerged on the long end of a 13-IZ score, but were scared half to death until Ioplin's last point after a touch- down was missed. . The game with Bentonville was played without the seniors and the sophomores and juniors looked good in winning 20-6. The season ended with a game with the ever strong Ft. Smith Grizzlies. The game was featured by strong offenses by each team. Our offense, against the largest team we played this season, looked the best it ever looked. We moved the ball well both on the ground and in the air, but we just did not have enough power to stop Ft. Smith's strong running attack and finally lost by the score of 32-28 We emerged with a season's record of 7 wins and 4 losses against very strong competition. Our season could not have been successful had it not been for every boy's determination to win. The enthusiasm conveyed to our football team by the Peppers, the Band, the teachers, and the entire student body was one of the main sources of our strength and will be long remembered by the athletes and coaches. This made FHS host to the annual AASC Convention. Delegates from all over the state came to Fayetteville April I6-18, 1953. Elizabeth Briden- stine served as chairman of the overall convention committee appointed from the student body. The council provided for benches to be placed around the lower hall in the new building and planted rose bushes around the fence of Harmon Playfield. An important fund raising project was the Student Council Circus. The council served the communitv as well as the school when it helped the March of Dimes. These projects were carried out in addition to the regular duties of the council, such as The Social Benefit Drive, and ballgame concessions. All of these projects carried out the three main objects of a Student Council promoting and encouraging student activity and greater participation, promoting har- monious relations between teachers and astudents, and developing in the student a growing appreciation of membership in Sl democracy. -12 Row l Doris Hughcs reporter George Davis, treasurer, Elizabeth Bridenstine, secretary, Clyde Carroll, presidentg Shirley Dans vice president immy McRoy historian, lohn Lusslay. It is composed of students interested in becoming teachers. This year there are 27 members. The club gave a coffee for the sponsors attending the State Student Council Convention. They also presented a convocation featuring a 20-Question panel. Representing Fayetteville High School at the State PTA meeting in Little Rock were Elizabeth Briden- Stine, Doris Hughes, and Greg Payne. ---.... --Qxyv-.,,,,,,.. QF if 5. 2 Voting is well underway. C.E.P. Fayetteville High School is one of two schools in Arkansas taking part in a Citizenship Education Project spon- sored by Columbia University. This project is based on the theory that learning comes through doing. The com- munity is used as a laboratory so that through observation and research, one may better understand the government. A lay-committee, composed of students and citizens, holds a meeting once a month to discuss results of class activities. Among other things, the class has taken a school and community survey on citizenship, visited courts, and given a radio panel discussion on the basic premises of American Democracy. Though there is plenty of work to do, Mrs. Ellis, the sponsor, has made the class interesting and lots of fun as well.
