x, LI 1 AX? kb 31' x ' .fd-f law fm hee I had Just gotten Gene off to work and decided to go uptown to do some shopping While I was getting ready, the phone rang It was a long distance call from Mary Lou New man informing me about the party she was having at her home ln Indianapolis in honor of Claudia Russell, who recently married a wealthy restaurant owner there Mary Lou is still single and is singing with the all famous Morris and Higgs Hillbilly Band I finished getting ready and walked down to catch a bus I was surprised to see a new driver, he was none other than Bill Woodard We chatted for awhile and he said that Gene Reese was a heavyweight boxer and Paul Lloyd was his manager They are bachelors living in an apart I had just stepped off the bus when I saw Ruth Blackburn now Mrs Ton Porter Jr , shopping for a television set for her new home on Barton Avenue in Terre Haute She told me she had re- ceived a letter from Frances Leek who is in the Women's Air Force stationed in New York While Ruth and I were talking Helen Combs came by and stopped and chatted for a minute She said she was a nurse at St Anthony's Hospital in Terre Haute I ate dinner at the Haynaker and Preston Diner Lulu Belle and Elisabeth have accomplish- ed much from their lb-H work in Fayette Township Lulu Belle invited me over to visit with her She and Elizabeth design and make dresses for Wilma Jackson, who is a model As I was going to get on the bus to go home, I met Barbara Merritt, who is a secretary at the new Allis Chalmers plant, and we decided to drive around in Barbara's new Henry J to visit some of our old classmates We drove out to the Strole farm to see Ronald, but his wife said he was out hauling gravel with his hired hand, Bob Eux We decided not to bother him, so we drove on Next we drove to Clinton to visit Bay Allen Cox, who manages the new Studebaker Garage We talked for quite awhile about our classmates, and during the conversation he told us that Norma Walker was happily married to Barry Cox, who is a Lt Col in the Armed forces He said that one of Norma's old girl friends, Orleta lbmkhouser was the new librarian at Fayette High Barbara then drove me back home to New Goshen She stayed for supper, and while we were clearing the table, we turned on the radio so we could hear the latest on the World Series, and we were rather surprised to hear Bill Walters, a famous sports newscaster over station S.l'.D. After Barbara left, Gene and I started to the party, When we had driven a couple of miles, we saw someone standing out in the road, so we stopped, There had been an accident, A Cadillac driven by Chuck Welker, who owns half interest in the American Can Company, ran into the back of a new Chevrolet in which Marilyn Wheat, a stenographer in a business firm in Terre Haute and Gloria ldington, a nursemaid, were riding. Chuck said he was on his way to Mary Lou' party, and since no one was hurt, we drove on to pick up Mary Ann Neal and her husband, Leon Pennington. Finally we arrived at the party, and all the members of our graduating class were present but Wanda Crist, now Mrs, Robert Haley. We did receive a telegram, however, from Wanda saying that she had to stay home because she was expecting Bob home from the Navy any minute. We were all glad that Mrs, Florence Miller, who sponsored our Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes, was present, We all had a good time talking to our old friends and about midnight we decided to start back home, and I made a mental note to contact each one in the near future and plan another get together in about a year, Bonnie Naugle ment house owned by Dale hmkhouser who also ovms radio station SJRD., Sandford. O ? 17 f V ky an , 1 M fXninfg1'apI1j Qlass 551:-inrg' STRIKE ONE With the opening of school in 19'-F8-149, a new class entered Fayette High School Bearing the name of 'Green Freshies , we began our game with the enrollment of thirty six students Tour of the students were new They were Paul Lloyd, Bill Woodard, Perle Robinson, and Bob Griswold At our first class meeting we chose Mr Jordon as our sponsor for the coming year Offi cers were elected as follows President, Ruth Blackburn Vice President, Wilma Jackson Sec retary Treasurer, Frances Leek B111 Woodard was our news reporter, or should we say copy boy because the girls did the writing We had our first class party on November 17 in the Home Ee room and our second party was held March ll in the Home lc room also Charles Benton who Joined the armed services, and Perle Robinson This left us with a. total of thirty three students to begin our second year of the game STRIKE TWO As the 19'-P9-50 school term opened we were all present with the exception of Jerry Reese Charles Kelsheimer and James ldlngton Claudia Russell Barbara Merritt, Leon Morris, and Kenneth Higgs ,joined us as new players in the game Therefore we had an enrollment of thirty four students We held our first class meeting in Hrs Miller-'s room s Miller was elected as class sponsor and the following officers were elected President, Leon Morris Vice President, Kenneth Higgs Secretary, Lulu Belle Haymker Treasurer, Ruth Blackburn lews Reporter, Gene Reese We all enjoyed a class party on the evening of October 7 in the Industrial Arts room With the close of school all thirty four students said their good byes with the hopes of seeing everyone as Juniors when the season re opened STRIKE 'LHREE Our Junior year began on the morning of August 29 1950. This was the year everyone was looking forword to. We had an enrollment of thirty students. During the summer we lost five students. These were Marvin Britton Cretlred from school, Billy Edington, also retired, Dorothy Haymaker, en rolled at Riley, Evelyn Headlo, now Mrs. Wallace Creamer, and Betty Wilson. We gained one student, Bill Walters. We were sorry to lose all these students, but we are wishing them all happiness in their future plans. We again elected Mrs. Miller as our sponsor and chose our class officers as follows. President, Ray Allen Cox: Vice President, Dale l unkhouser, Secretary Lulu Belle Haymakerg Treasurer, Ruth Blackburn- News Reporter, Barbara Kerritt. In October, Mrs. Miller and the U.S. History class, which consisted of all Juniors, went on a trip to Arcola Illinois. The class visited Bonnie Naugle's Uncle and was invited to a chicken dinner. Of course we accepted the invitation. We also visited a couple of factories and everybody enjoyed the trip very much. The next big event was our Junior Carnival for which everyone had been waiting. It was held on 0ctober l3 1950. With the help of the other students and some of the teachers, the Carnival was,a big success. We received our class rings on November 13, 1950. We were all delighted on their arrival. Before the arrival of our class rings we were sorry to lose Bob Griswold. He moved to Farmers- burg, but he still got a Fayette class ring. About two weeks before Christmas, we lost Clyde Cox and Harvey Gaston. 'mill left us with a totla of twenty seven students, but with the coming of the New Year, we welcomed Charles Welker, Mary Carter and Rene Jessup into our class. On April 20, we gave our class play, 'Brother Goose , in the gm. On April 18 we gave the play to the grades. Mrs. Florence Miller, Junior sponsor, directed the plzy. Min Margaret Martin The Class of 1952 dedicates their Yearbook to lliss llargaret llartin and Hrs Ruth Bumgardner who were the first two graduates of Fayette High School Mrs Bumgardner lives in Uni versal, Indiana, where she is now teaching the first grade She has two boys who are attend ing school there .cj llrs Bumgardner was before her marriage, Miss Ruth Bales She Wiley High School, and Fayette High School, where she was grad uated in 1917 She attended Indiana State Teachers College for three years, and she holds no degrees he has been teaching school ten years, and has taught at Fayette Miss Martln is the daughter of the late Edward Martin of near New Goshen.
