Tliank you, Mr. White and Mr. South- wortii! Steve White cares. He has watched over the ninth graders during their years at Fay School, carefully guiding their paths. He has taken a personal interest in their lives, how they felt, who they were, what they would become. He has wanted the very best for them all, and has helped them understand that what is desirous is not always best. He has listened to their stories and made them part of his own. His belief in them inspired them to believe in them- selves, to push beyond what they thought their limits to be and discover their potentials. Their dedication of this yearbook to Mr. White is a symbol that his dedication to them has not gone unnoticed. Just as he never forgot them they will not forget him. Marks! Latenesses! Neatnesses! Not long ago these words characterized the daily life of our Dean of Students, Mr. Southworth. Now we have Thursday luncheons for the color officers and class reps., and we feel more inclined to discipline ourselves. Mr. Southworth has always been our advocate and a person whom we have respected and revered. In Mr. Southworth we have had a person who really cares about our well being, and life at Fay has never been better — and the dances, too! His girls ' basketball team has become champs, and the cross-country runners shattered records everywhere. He ' s our own Boston Mar- athoner. We will miss his sensitivity, his humor — gosh, those never-ending nicknames! — and his commitment to creating the best school community anywhere. Good luck, Mr. Southworth, we will miss you! BROOKS HARLOW, JR ••• TELEPHONE Headmaster (©••J (617)485-0100 June, 1985 Dear Graduating Students: Each year when this time comes for me to write a message to you, I go back and reread the previous years ' messages. It helps me to put into perspective what has transpired at Fay during my eighteen years here. If I thought that last year I had not seen much of the student population, I really know that this year has been an even greater distance maker between me and you. In looking at my calendar, I have spent almost 75% of my time out of School. I am very aware of the demands which have been put on my time as my travels have taken me to many regions of this great country. My job at Pay has changed from that ever visible presence to that of one who is seeking to bring that outside consti- tuency ever closer to this fine School. Soon, you will be one of those who will only look back with either love, affection and endearment to your School or you will feel some resentment, unfairness or injustices in your stay with us. A discussion of feelings is appropriate because you are at the most wonderful stage of your development. The world is your oyster , say those of us who are older and wiser than you. You can accomplish anything you wish. You have been in an institution of learning which has provided you with choices, decision making, excellent teachers, fine resources, good physical programs and tradition. In ray travels I have probably met some 1,000 alumni of Fay and their feelings have varied about their stay with us. However, one recurring theme comes across from each one of those people, and it is, I really was given an outstanding education from a dedicated group of faculty and staff members. My message to this class of graduates is that you will do yourself, and only yourself, a great disservice if you do not use your God given talents to the best of your ability. Fine tune those talents as the years progress and also strengthen your weaknesses so that you can be a giver rather than a receiver. The phrase, To whom much has been given; much is expected , is so relevent to your situation. Such pride I receive when I hear of the wonderful accoraplishments of our graduates. They do their School proud, and I so hope that you too will bring such pride to yourself and to us. You have been given the tools; please use them. Mrs. Harlow, the faculty, the staff, and I will be very sorry to see you leave, but we know there are so many fine experiences awaiting you in your future endeavors. We hope you will wish to come back and see us often. The doors are always open, and we welcome you back with open arms. May you always know happiness. Sincerely yours. Sincerely yours, -. A. The Varsity A Soccer team had an excellent season with a 14-1 record. Their only loss was to Eaglebrook, where they had previously won the silver medal in the Eaglebrook tournament. The Varsity Football team had a winning 6-2 season this year. They lost against Eaglebrook and Fessenden, but came back to beat Fessenden 12-5 in their next meeting. Varsity Field Hockey ' s record of 5-61 was a good one, considering that only six players of the team of twenty- two had ever played before. The season was a building one for the team, and they plan to have an excellent season next year. Cross-country had a 7-4 final record this year. The team did well in the Eaglebrook tournament. They lost to both Rectory and Belmont Hill twice in the course of the sea- son. Varsity B Soccer closed out a fine 8-7 season with a win over Rectory. The final score of that game was 4-2, and it was Fay ' s defense that pulled off the win. Girls ' Varsity Soccer had an excellent 9-2 season, losing only to Westwood. The team played its best games against their toughest opponents, especially Westwood. The returning players hope to make next season as suc- cessful. The Fay J.V. Cub Football team ended its season with a 5-1-1 record. Their speed and intelligence were two of their greatest assets, and helped to create the fine season. J.V. A Soccer finished its season with a 9-3-1 record. The team scored forty-five goals to their opponents ' six- teen. The J.V. B Soccer team lost their last game, leaving them with a 2-8 record for the year. The team members were much younger than their opponents, and this was the cause of many of their losses. Girls ' J.V. Soccer had a split 5-5 season. The team played its hardest, and displayed excellent sportsman- ship. All in all, Fay had a terrific season this fall, and with luck, next year will be just as successful if not more so. — Audrey Doherty a m Field Hockey Wendy Hall: MVP, Maruschka Fallal: Harlow Award Cross- country Rob Ellison: MVP, Dan Moore: Coaches Award I Girls ' Soccer Rachel Onuf: Coaches Award, Anne Brynn: MVP Football Richard Nedlin: MVP. The new building was com- pleted, and while Dr. Heffernan had put many of his changes into effect last year, more came this year. Ef- forts became biweekly, and the advi- sor system was changed, so that stu- dents no longer chose their own advi- sors. The day student lounge was opened, and made available during the day. The dining hall acquired a new look, changing over to all round tables, and the study hall was no long- er a place of mass confusion during activity period. The new homerooms took over, and after activity, you wer- en ' t always going to sports; you could be going to any one of a number of activities, such as art, computing, photography, or pottery. Adding to this atmosphere of change and excitement, there was an extensive array of visitors who brought many talents and treated the school to audio-visual extravaganzas . . . Robert Cormier, author of The Chocolate War and I Am The Cheese, visited the library to discuss his writ- ing with students, and later shared lunch with them. Dr. Story Musgrave, a participant in a recent shuttle flight, also visited the school to captivate both students and parents alike with an informative talk and slide show. A select group of admissions officers and our own Mr. White gave a semi- nar for ninth graders and their parents on how to choose the right secondary school. 90 Frightfully Fearful Yet Dangerous- ly Curious and her friends put on a play for the school, and the creator of the play himself later visited the school, to crack the school up with his skillful and satricial mime. Ms. Sara Ransom met with the English classes in the library to enthrall with her enacted tales from foreign lands, depicting both heroes and villains in a one-woman theatre. Earlier in the year, the library had hosted the Book Character Dress-up Day, with the school donning the guise of their fa- vorite characters. Along with the constant influx of multi-talented people came the school ' s own productions. The lower school had their traditional play at Christmastime, this one with a mod- ern theme of striking elves and their rights. The Glee Club and Chorus per- formed the annual Festival of Carols and Lights elegantly. The major win- ter production was Thornton Wilder ' s The Skin Of Our Teeth, a satirical play based on the theme of the recur- ring hero. The spring musical was Bri- gadoon, a romantic play based on the legendary Scottish town. 91 While the shows were good, the dances left a little to be desired. Al- though the Valentine ' s Day Dance had a live band, it wasn ' t terribly obvi- ous from their playing. Theme dances prevailed, with a western dance leading off. Reinke Auditorium was transformed into the OK Corral, and the teachers had a great time shooting each other. While those fea- tured on the wanted posters were throwing each other into the jail, the students played poker and attempted suicide by downing Red Eye by the shot glass. The Christmas Dance was next, with a Spanish theme, and com- plete with a pinata that stubbornly resisted breaking. Halloween was original — a costume party! Accord- ing to those present, it was the best ever, and the costumes the most original and unique yet. The year was a good one athletical- ly, with many teams posting impres- sive records. The Sports Sentinel did well also, working diligently to cover the news, not only the sports. The paper made news itself; the South Middlesex News covered the Sentinel in an article. Varsity A Soccer went 14-1 in the fall, and girls ' Varsity Soc- cer also did well, posting a 9-2 record. The Fay Wrestling Team went unde- feated, and accumulated an envious amount of medals. Also, on the indi- vidual level, Lans Taylor made the Faces in the Crowd section of Sports Illustrated, due to his cham- pionship in the field of orienteering. Fay also received a Universal exer- cise machine. With up to fourteen stu- dents able to work out at a time, teams were able to gain an edge over their competition. 92 Unfortunately, 1985 was not with- out its low points. While the Killing- ton ski trip went off without a hitch, Smuggler ' s Notch turned out to be a costly mistake for some students, and resulted in several suspensions and one expulsion. Vandalism was still much in evidence, and toilets still seemed to plug up of their own ac- cord. Due to rampant stealing in the dormitories, room study was taken away for a time, and stiffer security measures taken, much to the boarders ' dismay. Despite these incidents, 1985 was a great year for all concerned. The graduating class is very sorry to leave Fay and all that she means to them, despite moving on to bigger and bet- ter things. Where else are the gradu- ates going to find bake sales as good as Fay ' s, another Mr. (Jpjohn, friends so dear, a moose so lovable? The ninth graders have always had to leave Fay and always will, but this year was exceptional; without a doubt, 1985 was the best year ever! 93 Lower The lower school had a great year in 1985. Now that we ' re settled in the new building for good, life has gotten simpler, and the double periods aren ' t too bad. At Christmas time, the fifth grade put on two plays, Skulduggery at Santa ' s Place and What Ever Hap- pened to Good Old Ebenezer Scrooge?, which went very well. The lower school wants to thank Mr. Claire and Mrs. Gardner for helping with the scenery. All of the grades sang Christmas carols. There were many interesting field trips this year, especially the annual apple-picking trip, and a visit to Chin- atown for lunch. We visited a lot of museums this year, including the Hig- gins Armory, which is a neat place to visit. 94 School We also visited the Worchester Sci- ence Museum, the Children ' s Muse- um, the Computer Museum, the Whaling Museum, the Boston Muse- um of Fine Arts, the New England Aquarium, and the Worcester Art Mu- seum. We also participated in the Ho- rizons For Youth program, where we stayed for three days and two nights. It was great! We are very sorry to say good-bye to Miss Collins, who will be leaving her job as reading teacher to go and work in the Peace Corps. We will miss her. — Zee Onuf Good luck to all of you in upcoming years at Fay, especially the fifth grad- ers as they become upper schoolers. — Rachel Jill The good times that I have had so far I think are great! Life is great for me since I came back to school. We have a great class in 5T and 5S. I go bowling with mini-sports and other computer kids. I think everybody likes school this year because there are new teachers and girls and boys. People have girl friends this year but I don ' t have one, neither does Jay Ful- ham and lots of kids. FSow you know almost every fun thing that ' s hap- pened in this year, so I guess there ' s nothing to say. — Rahsaan Carring- ton 95 In sports I learn about sportsnnanship ...
