ln the death of our Holy Father Pope Pius XII, the world has lost its finest leader. He died at the summit of his greatness, recognized as a living saint no less by the love and devotion of the free world than by the cold fury and the unappeasable hatred of the Kremlin. ln every crisis the Holy Ghost has produced a PontiPf equal to the need: Leo the Great turned back the Huns, Hildebrand met the medieval challenge to the Divine authority of Christ's Church, St. Pius V threw back the lvloslems and reformed the Church within. Pope Pius Xll assumed the authority of St. Peter at a time when the people of God were being plagued by Fascism on the one side and Communism on the other. lt was his aim not only to strengthen and defend the breastworks of Christendom against the mounting tide of atheism, but to buttress the Church from within by making more available the means of sacramental grace. Kindled by the spirit of God, he focused the attention of the Faithful on the inestimable riches of the Mass and the Eucharist. ln this time of world-wide emergency, he saw that the Christian can be nerved to martyrdom only by participating in the Holy Sacrifice and receiving the Bread of Angels. Thus it was that he relaxed the rules of the Eucharistic fast, so that Christian workers might receive Holy Communion at practically any hour of the day. He allowed priests permission to offer the Mass in the afternoon and evening as well as the usual morning hours. He gave us the sacraments in English and permitted pastors to confirm where there was real need. We have his last instructions written shortly before his death, exhorting all pastors to draw their con- gregations still closer to the Mass and teaching them how this might be clone. One of the most brilliant men in the world, Pope Pius Xll was the intellectual peer of any man who ever called on him. He spoke l.atin, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, English, Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. He held Doctorates in Theology, Philosophy, Canon Law and Civil Law. ln one notable address before the Pontihcal Academy of Science in February, l943, the Holy Father predicted the develop- ment of atomic energy, discussing at the same time the disintegration of uranium when bombarded by intra- neutrons. His generosity almost staggered the mind. One-third of the flour brought into Rome during the Nazi occupation was supplied by the Holy Father. His kitchen served hot soup to 200,000 people a day. At Castel Gandolfo during the war he sheltered l5,000 people, most of them women and children, A newspaper correspondent, appraising him with all the worldly canniness of his trade, once wrote that Eugenio Pacelli has the sublime greatness of a mortified almost transparent body, which seems to serve only as the cover of his soul. No other Pontiff in history me.t so many millions of pilgrims in Rome. Far from being bored or exhausted by these taxing audiences, he seemed to enioy them, to take a personal interest in each individual. While we clo not begrudge him the reward, the eternal peace into which he has entered, we shall miss this paternal Pontiff with the keen mind and kindly disposition. We shall ask our dear Lord to have mercy on his human failings, whatever they may have been, and to always raise up as great a successor as he was to the Church.
