U,-V,3,w.f, 'Q J ONXIK Ffh!-Q, NN W PW' ln the death of our Holy Father Pope Pius XII, the world has lost its finest leader. He died at the summit of his greatness, recognized as a living saint no less by the love and devotion of the free world than by the cold fury and the unappeasable hatred of the Kremlin. ln every crisis the Holy Ghost has produced a PontiPf equal to the need: Leo the Great turned back the Huns, Hildebrand met the medieval challenge to the Divine authority of Christ's Church, St. Pius V threw back the lvloslems and reformed the Church within. Pope Pius Xll assumed the authority of St. Peter at a time when the people of God were being plagued by Fascism on the one side and Communism on the other. lt was his aim not only to strengthen and defend the breastworks of Christendom against the mounting tide of atheism, but to buttress the Church from within by making more available the means of sacramental grace. Kindled by the spirit of God, he focused the attention of the Faithful on the inestimable riches of the Mass and the Eucharist. ln this time of world-wide emergency, he saw that the Christian can be nerved to martyrdom only by participating in the Holy Sacrifice and receiving the Bread of Angels. Thus it was that he relaxed the rules of the Eucharistic fast, so that Christian workers might receive Holy Communion at practically any hour of the day. He allowed priests permission to offer the Mass in the afternoon and evening as well as the usual morning hours. He gave us the sacraments in English and permitted pastors to confirm where there was real need. We have his last instructions written shortly before his death, exhorting all pastors to draw their con- gregations still closer to the Mass and teaching them how this might be clone. One of the most brilliant men in the world, Pope Pius Xll was the intellectual peer of any man who ever called on him. He spoke l.atin, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, English, Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. He held Doctorates in Theology, Philosophy, Canon Law and Civil Law. ln one notable address before the Pontihcal Academy of Science in February, l943, the Holy Father predicted the develop- ment of atomic energy, discussing at the same time the disintegration of uranium when bombarded by intra- neutrons. His generosity almost staggered the mind. One-third of the flour brought into Rome during the Nazi occupation was supplied by the Holy Father. His kitchen served hot soup to 200,000 people a day. At Castel Gandolfo during the war he sheltered l5,000 people, most of them women and children, A newspaper correspondent, appraising him with all the worldly canniness of his trade, once wrote that Eugenio Pacelli has the sublime greatness of a mortified almost transparent body, which seems to serve only as the cover of his soul. No other Pontiff in history me.t so many millions of pilgrims in Rome. Far from being bored or exhausted by these taxing audiences, he seemed to enioy them, to take a personal interest in each individual. While we clo not begrudge him the reward, the eternal peace into which he has entered, we shall miss this paternal Pontiff with the keen mind and kindly disposition. We shall ask our dear Lord to have mercy on his human failings, whatever they may have been, and to always raise up as great a successor as he was to the Church. T-'23 qs! Sf xx-va I, X xy, mf? So in the years ahead, as the Wise Man urges, Let wisdom be your quest, keep her at your side-your guardian, cherish herfyour preserverf' Here lies the road to wisdom, here is the path that will lead you straight to the goal. Hold fast by the ingtrug- tions you have received, and never let it go, guard it as you would your lite. f See how the path ot the just grows ever brighter, like the light of dawn opening out into full day.hLive as the Lord would have you live, and He will make even your enemies your well-wishersf' l can only add a fervent Amen to the exhortation ot Gods Prophet, and my Hrm conviction that, by continuing to walk securely in the path ot wisdom, as it has been pointed out to you here at Father Ryan, you will best honor your Alma Mater, and best express your Thank You to your parents and teachers and benetactors. Sincere congratulationsl WlLLlAM L. ADRIAN, DD., Bishop of Nashville V 'nf' J- Qnll, E X 1. W H p qzziltvr igzm High Snltuul 2300 Eiusroisi PLACE iXlASHVlLlE 5, TENNESSEE MY DEAR SENIORS: As each class graduates through the successive years, it is interesting to note the impression or mark that it leaves with the school, For, strange as it may seem, each class forms a real, distinct part of the whole that makes up the student body, Each class has its own distinctive spirit and ability, as you yourselves have shown through these past four years. But it is even more interesting to speculate of the future and wonder what mark or impression the class of 1959 will make upon the world around it. As it reaches maturity, what mark will it make upon the Church and the com- munity? How will it put into practice those principles instilled in the members by their Catholic education? How will it use the knowledge imparted to it by its teachers? God alone knows that future. But it is the earnest wish of the faculty, as we bid you God speed on June 4th, that each of you will follow that path pointed out to you by Divine Providence and that you will follow it success- fully to its conclusion, Heaven itself. He showed best again l.itton where he scored one touchdown and the tying extra point. Jerry Flynn was an end last year. Jerry tried his best in every game and never once let up. K Mike DuBois played center for this year's team. He was somewhat hampered by his size but he made up for it in his desire. Frank Halliburton handled the punting chores along with his end duties. He was the best punter in the league and was chosen on the All City team for his out- standing play. Bobby Ducklo played guard. He helped most on defense where he played line backer. Roy Jonnson was one of Ryan's tough guards. He excelled in blocking and WGS also a good tackler. Co-captain Richard Lisle was a victim of lady luck. He provided many problems for the opposing teams. George Reese held together the Pan- ther line from his tackle position. lt has been said that George hit the hardest lick in the city. But looking back on the four years which have become history in our lives, we wonder where the time has gone. On the night of .lune 4th we shall look around us and see our parents and other adults, who four short years ago seemed so old, and we shall know that now we are adults along with them. We shall see the halls, the gymnasium, the school-rooms, and the campus which has come to mean so much to us. We shall know that the time has come for us to bid these halls au revoir, till we meet again. l.et us hope that we shall not forget the school and the teachers who have labored so much to teach us the ideals of a Christian gentleman.
