,ii - KEYNOTE: MAN AND HIS ENVIRONMENT Hamlet: Act II, Scene2 What a piece of work is man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculties! in form and mov- ing how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god! 'll the beauty of the world and the paragon of animals. In these words, William Shakespeare's tragic hero, Hamlet, describes what man can be, but seldom is. He is a young man confused - as young people today are confused - by the world as his elders have made it, an imperfect world in which man has failed to live up to more than a fraction of his capabilities. Hamlet is talking not just about his countrymen, but all people. Similarly, when we talk about our world - our environment, if you will - we cannot talk only of the world of the Black man, or the Caucasian, the Indian or the Oriental. We must talk of every man, every woman, every child - all creatures in ap- prehension how like a god, in action how like an angel. What can and should young people do about this world which sometimes depresses and sometimes confuses? How does one get rid of the forces which hurt man's progress, without destroying the progress itself? There are no quick or easy answers. Certainly it is not enough to carry placards or shout slogans an- nouncing that greed, injustice, fear and war are unhealthy for children and other living things. To free the world of these evils takes more than hot words. It takes cool and clear thinking, careful planning, intelli- gent choices of action. We can make intelligent choices only when we have developed every skill of mind and body of which we are capable. No one becomes noble in reason with the mere snap of a finger. It takes courage to spend the necessary time in learning, so that we can bring to our actions the ability to think for ourselves, as well as the strength to stand by our convictions. There is a saying making the rounds these days: Today is the first day of the rest of your life. How true it is, for each day offers each of us fresh opportunities to make of our environment something to be proud of, thus making of ourselves the beauty of the world and the paragon of animals.
