Flower: White Carnation Song: The Best Is Yet To Come Introduction 1 SENIORS fl FINAL STEP Senior Class Officers Alicia Hilton.....................................Secretary Monica Royster................................Vice President Thomas Joseph.....................................President This year's senior class members have taken the biggest steps of their lives. We moved into the adult world. Our time spent at Farrell High prepared us well for the transition. In addition to acquiring knowledge, we learned how to communicate it. Our teachers taught us much more than just how to read and write. They taught us the importance of self-discipline, the need for establishing goals, and the importance of striving to achieve those goals. The members of the class displayed their academic abilities in many ways. For example, twelve members were nominated to compete in the Century III scholarship program. Four members represented the school at a Free Enterprise Week held at Lock Haven University. Many participated in the Challenge Plus program held on the local Penn State branch campus. As we go our separate ways into colleges, trade or business schools, the military, or the work force, we carry with us cherished memories of special teachers, favorite classes, good friends, and unforgettable times. Last year's returning queen, Sybil Lam-pkins, and each court member were chauffeured around the track in cars supplied by Mr. Hugo Washington and Baglier Buick Co. As the excitement and suspense were building, the Union Scotties were being slaughtered by the mighty Farrell Steelers. At half time our queen, Alicia Hilton, was crowned; and trophies were presented to the court. A dance, D.J.'d by Rodney Talbert and Cory Hilton, followed the victorious game in the high school gym. A weekend full of fun and memories was complete when the queen and her court were honored as special guests at Farrell's Homecoming Day and parade. Measures were taken to enforce severe weather drills, homework requirements, and grade eligibility requirements for participation in extracurricular activities. Not only did our students attend classes but our faculty also attended a comprehensive staff-training and development seminar in an effort to continue the quest for educational excellence. Much planning and preparation preceded the Elements of Instruction workshop which was held for five days in October at the Sheraton Inn, West Middlesex. In order to free the staff for the days of the meetings, the student body was excused from attending school by special permission of the Pennsylvania Department of Education and by the authority of the Board of Education. No learning time was lost, however, because students' schedules were adjusted so that their instruction time exceeded the state requirements of 120 hours per year for every one-credit class and the 990 total hours per year for educational instruction. This was the phrase on the minds of most of the sophomores. We were beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We had adjusted to high school life and felt we were ready to deal with the challenge of becoming upperclassmen. Our sophomore year was an in-between year. We were no longer the youngest members of the student body, but we were not yet entitled to the privileges that come with the titles of juniors and seniors. However, this did not discourage us! We worked hard in our classes and were active participants in all of the extracurricular activities available to us. The most exciting activity for many of us was the prom. If asked by a junior or senior, sophomores were permitted to attend. As newly established underclassmen, we were allowed to participate in many more of the school's organized activities. We felt honored to be a part of: the dances, the spirit days, the pep rallies, the cheerleading squads, athletic teams, clubs, and assemblies. The freshmen class has experienced both sides of the coin since they were the first 8th grade class to be moved into the high school with the consolidation of the school district. As 8th graders, we were made aware of the wall between our class and the upperclassmen. But as 9th graders, we were welcomed as official members of the high school, and we saw the barrier come down. Because we were the youngest and the newest members of the student body, we had the most adjustments to make. In the process of making the adjustments, we found that the junior high was really a new and different world. We tried very hard to accept the new rules and to adapt to our new surroundings. We were just glad to be here. The members of the class of 1991 were proud to become eighth graders. We loved having classes in the high school, knowing that we only had one more year to wait until we earned the title, Freshmen. Wow! It was a lot of fun learning about the school's traditions and activities even though we were not yet permitted to participate in many of them. We look forward to the time when we can join in all the school activities. Top Sam Hosey Brandon Lewis Nicole Holden. Photo : 7th Grade Class Officers ................................. The hottest fashions were displayed daily. The look was big, bright, and baggy with matching socks and Madonna boots. The students had their own special language. If you said or did something stupid, you were sure to be told, You be illin'; and if someone totally agreed with you, they would confirm it by saying, Truly!!. When Friday afternoon came, the only thing on all of our minds was what we were going to do for the weekend. Some of the possibilities included: the Teen Center, the Red Cabboose, a party, an athletic event, or McDonalds. If none of these options appealed to you, you might have gone to see a flick such as: Friday the 13th, Part 6, Nightmare on Elm Street 11, Back to School, or Top Gun. No matter what you decided to do, no evening was complete without music. Songs by Whitney Houston, Van Halen, Run DMC, L.L. Cool J, and revivals of Beatles and Beach Boys classics topped the charts. This year ve had our First exchange students. Jorge Arturo Esparza Iturbide and Diana Graciela Velazco Melgarejo came to Farrell from Mexico. Jorge is from Fresnilla, Zacatecas; Diana lives in Jalapa, Veracruz. While in Farrell, both stayed with the Dowlings on Roemer Boulevard. Diana returned home in November. Jorge, who was a member of a Rotary International Exchange Program, also stayed with the Dulebas of Farrell Terrace and will return home this summer. Jorge said he has enjoyed his stay in Farrell but prefers to return to Mexico, where he lives with his parents, four sisters, and a brother. Jorge has learned more about the other areas of the United States and Canada through Rotary sponsored trips to Niagara Falls and Pittsburgh. He also visited Texas with the Dowlings during Thanksgiving break. Jorge has learned more about our country and our customs, and we in turn have come to appreciate his background and traditions. Exchange Students 91 ATHLETIC A commitment to Athletic Excellence ' This is a phrase heard very often at Farrell High. This commitment has lead to many great accomplishments and above all a long-standing tradition, Winning. We have made a name for ourselves in all areas of athletics in which we participate. Farrell has received the Si Lyman award three times since its initiation in 1982. This award is given to the high school in the valley with the highest overall winning percentage. We have struggled to build this tradition and work hard every season to continue it. EXCELLENCE 92 Sports ACADEMIC Mr. Nevant presents Frank Gargiulo with a certificate in recognition of his being the first-place Farrell finisher in the Century III Scholarship Program. Patricia Ion and Kimberly Powell, band, and Gretchen Shephard, Jennifer Baldwin, and Sherry George , chorus, qualified to participate in district band and chorus. Gary Leipheimer and Leah Toskin display their best actor and actress trophies from the 1986 Greenville Shakespeare Festival. Farrell High School is committed to academic excellence. On an average more than 70% of Farrell's students go on to continue their education after graduation. Every year many of the seniors are presented with awards on Recognition Day. In addition, seniors as well as underclassmen receive academic commendations during the school year. These pictures show only a few of the award winners. Farrell students know the honor of being academic stars as well as athletic stars. Mr. Fortine congratulates Mark Scarmack on his award of a $1,500 bond from the United Steel Workers of America. Cast members of the Shakespeare Club's The Play's the Thing perform for the audience at Greenville High School in the 1987 Shakespeare Festival. The troupe received the best over-all entry trophy for its performance. Mark Scarmack shows Mr. Nevant the certificate he received for his National Merit Commendation. Pretty boring, huh? Friends play a very important role in most people's lives. Friends see us through good and bad times and make everything fun. With face and eyes as kind as yours and the joy you bring to me, with little talks that help me out, my friend you'll always be. Lack of experience didn't hold us back. We began our plans at Seven Springs in August and worked hard throughout the school year to make them a reality. However, we cannot take all the credit. Many thanks go to Mrs. Ristvey, our adviser; Dave Vernon, professional photographer from Abey Studio, for the great pictures; Mr. Aliello for his help with the cover and division pages; and our terrific Taylor representative, Mrs. Dorothy Albright. We hope you treasure this book as much as we do. Name, Date, and Serial Number Your signature, please. Getting artistic advice Mr. Albright lends a hand. Much of the credit for our achievements can be attributed to our fine staff of coaches. During the past five years, new head coaches have been hired in the following sports: girls basketball, swimming, and girls and boys track. Charles Branca, athletic director, and Harriett Morrison, assistant athletic director, are responsible for all sports schedules and all sports events held at our school. During the 1985-86 school year, Farrell once again distinguished itself in all sports: District 10 Champs in football; first in Section 12 and first in WPIAL in girls volleyball; Section 111 Champs in boys basketball; runner-up in WPIAL girls basketball; two 1st place at Mid-Western Athletic Conference and one 5th place at WPIAL in swimming and diving; Section 1 Co-Champs, first at WPIAL, runner-up at State in boys volleyball; two 1st and one 6th place at State in boys track; one 1st, two 3rd, one 4th, and one 5th place at State in girls track. He made Farrell a proud, well-known winner. This man was Edward J. McCluskey. The Master, as he was affectionately known, began his reign in 1948. With his departure in 1976, he left FHS with 7 state championships, 11 WPIAL crowns and 16 section wins. With the death of this legendary man, one of his old traditions was revived. One of the traditional red ties worn by Mr. McCluskey at his games was given to Mr. Sincek by Rocco Vadala. Mr. Sincek wore the tie at the Perry Academy game. To honor this great man, all team members and coaches wore black bands on their uniforms and suits respectively. The score boards were also draped in black. Edward J. We are suddenly SENIORS. What happened to the past? As we look back now, when we first started out, how did we know, what school was about? We learned our alphabet and how to spell our names. Then came the numbers and some fun games. When we went to McKeever, we had so much fun. If we could only relive all the great things we've done! Then in the fifth grade, we lost our dear friend. We were hurt, knowing memories of him would ne'er end. Then in grade six, we went to the Park. Somehow they dragged us out just before dark. Then things improved in grades seven and eight, when we went to Geauga for two years straight. Our freshman year you could see in our eyes, we would all succeed and become very wise. Our soph year was better, though the work made us blue. We attended the prom — our dream come true. The year we were juniors, the time seemed to fly. The end was at hand, as we reached for the sky. In spite of our troubles, battles lost and won, we had good and bad times, but it had really been fun. Time's ticking away, and we'll say our good-byes. We will be leaving our friends amidst old cries. Some will moum those memories left behind. Because our high school days will linger in each mind. When stepping out the door.. .life could be heaven, 'cause we will always remember...
