FUTURE NURSES TRAINING PROGRAM Farrell High School Is proud to give special recognition to 42 members of the Future Nurses Club who have completed a 22 hour training course at Sharon General Hospital. They are now generously giving their time working 4 hour shifts per week in all the hospital departments. Their duties include feeding the patients, making beds, taking phonecalls, running errands and other important duties beyond those of the Candy Stripers or the Volunteers. The purpose of this training program is twofold; to determine if the student is suited to enter a nursing school after graduation, and to give the hospital needed help. These little helpers, in their bright yellow uniforms, nicknamed Canaries” or Lemon-aids by the hospital staff, deserve a great deal of praise for their unselfishcontributiontoward helping the sick. Both were untried but eager to give their best; they did. This season could be described as finding the comeback trail, for after two losing seasons, we ended the year with a fine 6-4 record, hard fought and well deserved. The Nightriders met the fine Erie Tech team in the first home game of the season. Eager for victory, the Nightriders disposed of Tech in proper fashion, 25 to 6. The Nightriders then trecked to the field of one of the preseason favorites, the Aliquippa Indians. The Nightriders jolted their hopes by trouncing them, 12-7. Spirits high afterwinningtheirfirsttwo games in a row, our team traveled to the so lair of the undefeated Butler Tornadoes. Capitalizing on Farrell fumbles and a fine ground game they set Farrell back 27-7 for our first loss. Our undespairing team returned to our own field and charged by an enthusiastic student body, they tripped a determined Fitch, 7-6 in the final minutes of play. We met Ellwood City at home and completely dominated the game and routed them 33 to 0. We displayed one of the best balanced games of the season. Our next two games were the end of a four game home stand that pitched us against the league leaders. New Castle and Beaver Falls. Despite a 6-6 stalmate in the first half, we lost in remaining two quarters of the game the big New Castle Squad, 20-6. The Nightriders faced second place tigers and suffered their second loss in a row with Robert Hughes, Robert Donatelll, Peter Backo, Ken Krukar, Jerome Campbell, Hugh Mcklnnis, Adrian Capital, Ray Wilson, Tyrone Williams, Charles Craig, Howard Robinson, manager. Top row: Jerry Sarazen, Joe Sabulsky, Jim Kelly, Phil Dlsko, Randy Hammand, Forrest Underwood, William Lee, Sam Hosey, James Jones, Tom Doyle, Dan Buchman, Joe Chavara. the Tigers utilizing several fumbles and penalties. The final score was a 18-6 Beaver Falls victory. The Nightriders faced the second place Tigers and took their second setback in a row, with the Tigers taking advantage of several fumble and Farrell penalties, 18-6. Fighting all the way, we traveled to battle a new visitor to our schedule, Hopewell, a team ranked high and undefeated in the W.P.I.A.L. Here we lost a heart-breaker .The upset-mindedNightriders completely dominated the first half's action, leading 7-0, at the whistle. But the second half Hopewell rallied from behind and went ahead 14-7. Twice we had the ball inside the Hopewell 2 , but penalties and fumbles kept us from paydirt. The outcome was a triumphant Hopewell. Our final away game with Ambridge showed we still had what it takes. We bombed the Bridgers 26-13. The season finally found us with our rivals as Farrell hosted the Sharon Tigers. Both teams were evenly matched in league play sporting identical records, 3-3. This was a battle between Farrell's fleet and powerful offense and Sharon's airtight defense. Farrell perforated it by excellent running and plain-ole desire . The outcome was a victorious Farrell team, with Farrell putting the Tiger in the tank, 13-6. Thus the season ends with a fine 6-4 record for the books and an optimistic outlook for next year. 81 FOOTBALL COACHES 1. to r. Mr. Russell C. Phillips, Mr. William Gargano, Mr. John Sava, and Mr. Steve Karlovich. Our fine coaching staff was particularly responsible for this year's great team. Football mentor, William Gargano, in his first year as head coach, led the Nightriders' charge. Coach Gargano's undying faith in his team gave the boys emotional strength, while years of excellent experience as assistant coach guided the team on the field. Mr. Gargano is an alumnus and gridiron star of Farrell Senior High and Clarion State College. On May 26, 1965, Mr. Anthony Paulekas was honored at a teachers' banquet for twenty-seven years of service to the Farrell Senior High School as teacher and coach of our football, track, and wrestling teams. In his former sanction as head football coach, Mr. Anthony Paulekas guided the Farrell High Nightriders to the Class A W.P.I.A.L. football championship in 1951. This has been the only W.P.I.A.L. football crown held by an area team. The Reflector staff, along with the entire student body, would like to give special recognition to Mr. Paulekas for his admirable record as teacher and coach. Doing a fine job, and partly responsible for our preparedness on the field, were the assistant coaches and trainers. Mr. John Sava, our capable line coach, is head assistant coach. Mr. Russell Phillips did a fine job as assistant coach in charge of the back, as you can see by having watched our wily-speed merchant backfield. Our driving line was in the hands of Mr. Steve Karlovich. Best wishes for the coming season. The 1965 varsity track team had an outstanding season with stellar performances by both the team and individuals. We ended the season with a fine 8-3 dual meet record. The highlight of the season was the team's winning the W.P.I.A.L. Regional Meet for the first time in the history of the school. There were 16 Class A schools participating. Farrell thine lads were first 43 points followed by Ambridge with 35, Aliquippa with 32, Butler with 29, and twelve other schools close behind. The team won the Farrell Invitational Track Meet and also did well in the New Castle Invitational Track Meet. As for individual honors this year's team copped six school records and tied one. There were many great performances but two were outstanding: the 120 high hurdle mark of 15.0 seconds set by Damun Gracenin and the broad jump record of 21' 5 1 4 set by Sharkey Flint. Mr. Russ Phillips, in his sixth year at the helm as head coach, turned in his usual fine job in shaping the team. He was ably assisted by Steve Karlovich, assistant, and John Sava, Don Scarvel, and Jerry Dorulla who worked with the junior high program. 85 Basketball Sec. Ill Champs The spirited Steelers opened the season against the Mountain Lions of Altoona, one of the preseason contenders for the W.P.I.A.L. crown, who had a 3-0 record at Altoona. The game was hard fought with its score tied ten times. The Steelers led 39-31 at hAlf time; but a strong second half surge turned the tide, and the Lions won 63-53. Despite the loss, the Steelers proved themselves a dangerous contender for the W.P.I.A.L. honors. Iaclno was high scorer with 22 points. The Steelers met Erie Tech on their own court. The determined Steeler team, hard and rough, had shot 50% ball. The game was close for the first half with Farrell leading 38-31. The last half surger proved too much for the Raiders and the Steelers emerges with an 83-65 victory. Iaclno and Flint paced the Steelers with 15 points apiece. Bishop McCort, one of the toughest in the section, met the Farrell Steelers at home with a perfect 3-0 record. A fine team effort gave the Steelers a 58-46 victory. Iaclno and Radu poured in 19 and 18 points respectively to pace the team. Likewise, the number 1 rated team in Ohio found the Steelers too powerful a foe as they went down to defeat. 65-57 on our home court. This was eventually the only defeat for the powerful Canton McKinley Bulldog quintet. Radu was high man with 20 points. Sharkey Flint proved a demon defensively against the Bulldogs. Next, the Steelers traveled to meet the New Kensington Raiders. Farrell led throughout the game but a last minute surge put the game in doubt up to the buzzer. The final score was a 60-56 triumph for the Steelers. Sammy Iaclno again bombed the nets and reached his season high of 31 points. The pre-section schedule was brought to an exciting finish at the Farrell Lion's Club Tournament. The three teams besides Farrell were Warren Harding. Catasaqua. and Homestead. Each of these three teams brought with them a composite 20-0 record. On the first night Warren disposed of a spunky Catasaqua team and a rough Homestead team gave the Steelers their second setback of the season 66- 45. In the consolation round a determined Farrell squad bounced back with a rousing 81-56 victory over Catasaqua with Iaclno, Flint and Samuels hitting the double figures. Named the team most likely to upset the Aliquippa Indians, the current Section 3 champs. Farrell opened shop at Ellwood City. With a 23-22 half time lead, the Steelors had to fight hard to bring home a 56-51 victory. Our floor general, Bill Samuels, tallied 27 points for a winning cause. The Steelers hosted the battling Bengalsof Beaver Falls for our first home game of the section. The Farrell Steelers maintained a slim margin throughout the game and emerged 61-56 victors. Iaclno netted a big 25 points. The New Castle Hurricanes found competition too tough at Farrell and were bounced 77-48. Meanwhile, at Sharon, the Tigers defeated the Aliquippa Indians 59-58 to put the Steelers in a two way tie for first place. The Aliquippa quintet hosted the Farrell Steelers, determined and as ready as we were. The Indians led by as much as 9 points the first half but sudden spurts by our team sent them to the lockers at half time with only a two point lead, 27-25. In a surprising second half, Farrell poured on the steam to give them a 6 point lead, 53-47, with two minutes on the clock. But a severe case of foulltis and a two pointer in the last 6 seconds sent the Steelers home with their first section defeat, 56-55. At Butler, the never say die Steelers rebounded with a 70-61 victory to remain deadlocked with Aliquippa in the toughest section in the state. In the final contest of the first half, the Steelers encountered their ever-dangerous rival, Sharon, who was only one game behind. The game see-sawed during the first half, but a 6 point spurt sent Farrell to the lockers with a 27-22 lead. Sharon rallied during the second half to come within two points, but the Earl Chapman's wild bombardment put the game in the books. Farrell-51, Sharon-47. In that exciting game the Earl tallied a high 23 points. In their first second half encounter Farrell lost a foul-line, doubleovertime nightmare to the Ellwood City Wolverines. Trailing 52-35 at the end of the third quarter, Farrell unleashed a savage spurt that carried them into a 63-63 deadlock at the end of regulation time. Although Samuels and Chapman were out on fouls in the fourth quarter, Radu scored two fouls to deadlock the score 65-65 at the end of the first overtime. Keith Klamer marked all five points in the double overtime, but the fouls proved fatal as Ellwood emerged the victor, with a heart-breaking 70-69 victory. New Castle, meanwhile, squeaked out a 50-49 victory over Aliquippa to help keep Farrell and Aliquippa tied for first place. Farrell traveled to Beaver Falls and kept pace with the Tigers by scoring a 63-58 triumph. Samuels was high man with 17 points. The Farrell team then traveled to and fought for their very life at New' Castle. With the score deadlocked at the end of the first half, 37-37, and at the end of regulation play, 71-71, and found themselves in overtime play. Keith Klamer tallied 6 points in the overtime to lead us to a 78-75 victory. Chapman was high scorer with 18 points. The Steelers returned home for the league leading struggle with Aliquippa. A standing room only crowd watched the determined Steelers play championship ball and defeat the ever-dangerous Aliquippa Indians, 67- 49. Farrell led at half time and went Jubilantly to the locker room with an 8 point lead, 32-24. Sharkey Flint led the flred-up Steelers with 18 points, while Allqulppa's ace Chad Calabria was held to only nine points. Farrell now stood first In Section 3 play, with plenty of hard-fought action to come. Farrell then traveled to the lair of the last place Ambridge Brldgers, always a deadly foe on their home court. The game was a nightmare with Ambridge taking it after a nlp-and-tuck battle 81-78. The flred-up Bridger quintet had knocked the mighty Steelers out of sole possession of first into another Aliquippa deadlock for first. The fierceness of the fray is shown by the second and third quarter scores: 38-38, 55-55. Iaclno and Chapman led Farrell with 22 and 20 points respectively. Farrell faced a mathematically in Butler team on our own court. Despite close ball for the first half, Farrell-31, Butler-30, we knocked the game open for 52 points In the second half, our seasons highest spurt, to win the game 83-68. Iaclno tallied 24 points, and Bill Samuels contributed 19 points for our cause. Aliquippa hammered Ellwood City 90-52 to maintain their deadlock. Our last regulation section game pilled us against our neighboring rival, the Sharon Tigers, on their court. The spirited Steelers ripped the backyard foes 72-52, after taking it easy the second half, leading 44-18. Court general Bill Samuels paced the Steelers with 22 points. With Aliquippa beating Ambridge we traveled to the Pitt Field House to clash for Section 3 supremacy on February 25. A large contingent of 400 Farrell students traveled to Pittsburgh to back the Steelers. Farrell erased Aliquippa for the second time of the season and won the crown for kingpin of the roughest section in the state. Aliquippa took a frightening 10-4 lead early in the first quarter, but a quick rally made the score Chapman -12, Aliquippa-12 at the end of the period. The Earl scored all 12 Steeler points. Farrell poured on the power and led at halftime 26-20. The second half was a back-and-forth ball game that saw the Steelers win the crown 48-43. This game was strictly defensive as Farrell kept the Indians down under. Farrell's first round foe was Trinity representing Section 4. Again an equally large representation of the student body traveled to the Pitt Field House to cheer the team on. The McCluskey-men found the Trinity team a real threat as they took the first quarter lead 11-10. Farrell bounced back in a furious second session to lead at the halftime 25-22. The long-range artistry of Sharkey Flint even widened the gap in the third frame 43-35. Farrell fought off repeated thrusts by Trinity who came within two points. Two foul conversions by Bill Samuels iced the game in the final seconds and we took a big one, 50-47. The Earl Chapman and Sharkey Flint were high men with 18 and 13 points. The Steelers were go when they faced the Jeannette Jayhawkers at the vast Civic Arena. Farrell led easily at the first quarter, 13-7. The Jayhawkers scrambled back in the second quarter and left the Steelers with a two point lead, 24-22. The McCluskey-men then unleashed a savage barrage in the third quarter led by Chapman's dead eye and Sharkey Flint's moon-shot accuracy that tallied 25 points, while holding Jeannette to only 9 points. In the final quarter the Steelers maintained their margin and coasted to a 68-50 victory; earning the right to play the Red Raiders of Unlontown in the W.P.I.A.L. semi-finals. The Earl paced the Steelers with 23 points. General Bill Samuels contributed 18 points. Farrell met Unlontown for the sixth time In W.P.I.A.L. competition. Farrell battled fiercely for the few minutes of the first quarter tying the score three times and upping the famed panic press. But monopolizing the board and utilizing fast breaks, the Raiders made 12 quick points. The Steelers retaliated with six straight tallies giving the Raiders two foul shots. The quarter score was: Unlontown-22, Farrell-14. The Steelers caught fire the second quarter and tied the game at the half 34-34. Farrell's brilliant hoopster, Sam Iaclno took command scoring 18 points. At halftime he carried 25 points to the locker, shooting 11-14 from the field and 3-3 at the line. The flred-up Steelers started a hot third quarter and scored 8 straight points going Into a 42-34 lead. Farrell led by eight points at the end of the third quarter, 52-44. Farrell widened the lead to 9 points in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter 59-50. Several one-sided calls and quick turnovers enabled the Raiders to gain 4 points with two minutes left, 60-56. Suddenly the Raiders regained their strength and surged to a 63-62 lead. Farrell regained the lead for the last time, 64-63. With 14 seconds remaining the Raiders hit a 3 point combination play and iced the game, 68-66. 86 87 JUNIOR VARSITY SQUAD First row left to right: David Rucker, Richard Campman, Anthony Monte son, Robert Multari.
