-SUEU-XL SUE EES- The Social Science Department of our school, under the direction of Mr. Dresch, is doing much to instruct the students of Farrell Senior l-ligh School about the past and present of all the countries of the world. The purpose for teaching the social sciences is to provide the student with an understanding of the desires and needs of his fellow man, and to prepare him for a place in the world of today. World history is the study of the world from prehistoric times to the present. ft deals with the origin and spread of civilization throughout the world. American history tells of the settling of our country in 1607, and the reason for settling it. lt relates the story of our struggle in battle or by treaty to keep this country free and democratic. Problems of Democracy deals with the present, and teaches the practical aspects of our economic and governmental systems. Each year the Problems of Democracy classes participate in the I speak for Democracy contest which gives them an appreciation of the freedoms they enjoy. Mr. Dresch, Mr. Paulekas, Mr, McCluskey, Mr. Canterna, and Mr. Scarvell are the social science teachers. HUME ECU UMIES UEPAHTME HOME ECONOMICS In Farrell High School girls may specialize in Home Economics by enrolling in the Vocational Home Economics Course, or they may elect courses which are general in scope. The Vocational Home Economics Course provides instruction and experiences in the basic aspects of personal, family and home living. The core of its educational program is to raise standards for family living and to teach practical habits of work that may be carried over into later life. The girl, her family, and her home formulate its important background. Girls who specialize in this course are prepared to adapt a scientific and intelligent approach to the valuable and enjoyable vocation of homemaking. ln the Vocational Home Economics Course there are varied opportunities available to meet college and nursing school en- trance requirements, provided the pupil selects those subjects that will be accepted as college or nursing school entrance units. General Home Economics can be elected for one year by girls from any other course. One of the important objectives is to de- velop the appreciation of homemaking as a stimulating and re- warding vocation, and an understanding of the varied opportunie ties available to home economics trained people. The units are planned to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of the girls in each class. Units most frequently selected are: basic nutrition, table manners and etiquette, party foods, clothes-making, tex- tiles, clothing selection, child care, and good grooming. 20 Miss Frances Dux-itsa B.S.
