Their traditions, records, honors, achievements, and services to the school, the city, the county, the state and the nation have inspired us! Through their splendid efforts, we have had excellent opportunities for an edu- cation in the various courses of study, for class and school activi- ties, for school publications, music and dramatics, for participa- tion in athletics, and for personality and character training that will guide us throughout our lives. We also pay tribute to all of the members of the Board of Education, the administration, the faculty, the secretaries, the school employees, and the student body who have made our school experiences pleasant, profitable and permanent. We are grateful to all those who have helped to make our yearbook and our commencement outstanding. ANTHONY PERFIUO School Solicitor Congratulations The Farrell School District is both happy and proud to commemorate a very significant mile- stone in its educational system. This year, the Senior High School celebrates its fiftieth Com- mencement. I feel extremely proud, both as an Alumnus of the Farrell High School and as Super- intendent of Schools to salute the graduating class of 1953 which has the honor of being the Jubilee graduating class. ln addition to your in- dividual and class achievements, I know that the class of 1953 is very happy to have this distinct honor. l extend my felicitations to your administra- tors and to the teachers of this fine institution. Special recognition and respect are extended to the first class of three students who graduated in 1904. For the community, for the Farrell Senior High School, for the administration and teachers of the entire system, and for the graduating class of 1953, l extend our most sincere acknowledg- ment to these three graduates: Miss Florence Harry, Mrs. Grace Brauchle Rigby, Mr. Frank L. Clepper. Furthermore in this auspicious year, recogni- tion is made of and appreciation is shown for the 5,630 graduates of the Farrell High School at' these fifty commencements. ln memoriam, all of us wish to pay our respect to the deceased mem- bers of this master graduating class of 5,630 stu- dents. lt is only fitting and proper that we should express our appreciation to all the School Boards, to all the administrators, to all the faculties, to all the parents, and to all the friends of the schools in our community for their contributions to and perpetuation of the educational system of this community. It goes without saying that they, too, are happy and feel a sense of pride on this occasion. We salute all of them, we are proud of all of them. Our Jubilee celebration, including special preparations for our fiftieth commencement, in- evitably will take, in retrospection, the members of all the graduating classes to many pleasant memories, happiness and achievements as indi- viduals and as a class. In this retrospection, I am sure that we all feel it incumbent on us to ap- praise the efforts of those who had th-e interest of and foresight to set in motion the formal educa- tion of this community. lt is also our duty to make a self appraisal of our obligations and in- terests as Alumni in this education. As Alumni and citizens of this community, or whatever com- munity we may live in, and whatever our station in life, it is our obligation to contribute our efforts and our support to the education of our youth. On this fiftieth anniversary let us dedicate, or re- dedicate, as the case may be, a substantial par- ticipation in the American way of life in our American educational system. Mindful of the American traditions and cog- nizant of the traditions on the local level, it is only fitting, proper, and urgent that we resolve not only to support these traditions in a traditional way, but to improve on these traditions and on the records of the past. lt is the essence of educa- tion and of the American way of life and of pro- gressive schools to explore the resources of a community and to provide the most and the best type of education for the ultimate, over-all de- veloped citizen of our community and country. We appreciate the American way of life, the American educational system and the American support of both. Congratulations on this fiftieth Jubilee Commencement to the Alumni and to the community for this sincere support. I6 I The Curriculum To prepare a student to meet life in a com- plex world is the obiect of the administration of the Farrell Public Schools. It is to that end that the curriculum of the Farrell Senior High School is set up so that each student may find in it a course of study suitable to his needs and desires. The curriculum is divided into six courses of study, each having a definite aim which will en- able the student to prepare himself for gradua- tion, and ultimately for the life he chooses to follow. The Academic Course is planned primarily for, and recommended to students who intend to attend colleges, technical schools, or other in- stitutions of higher learning to study law, medi- cine, engineering, ministry, dentistry, teaching, nursing, or any other professions. ln this course only those students should enroll who have the ability to do the required work, for it is highly specialized and built to meet the requirements for college entrance. Success in this course is recog- nized if the students rank in the upper half of the graduating class. The Commercial Course is designed for those students whose interests lie in the business field. This part of the curriculum prepares students for positions in offices as stenographers, typists, re- ceptionists, bookkeepers, and clerks, but it may also prepare students for a business course in college, provided that they choose the proper elective courses to qualify them for entrance to college. The Commercial Course in the curricu- lum is vocational in nature and is divided into a two-phase program. One phase of the course is for students who are interested in accounting or bookkeeping, the other phase is for students who are interested in stenography and the other allied secretarial positions. The General Course, probably the most popular one, is recommended for students who do not wish to prepare themselves for college, or for positions in business. This course provides a brood civic, scientific, and cultural training for a life of active, intelligent citizenship, and is adapted to fit the capacities, interests, and abili- ties of the individuals who enroll in it. lf the stu- dents make a wise selection of electives, this course may be the best choice for a great many pupils inasmuch as it touches a varied field of subiect matters. lt is recommended that students taking this course schedule at least one shop course during their high school years. For the students who are skillful in manual arts, and who wish to take part in an industrial- economic life, the curriculum provides the lndus- trial Arts course. The industrial arts program is that part of general education concerned with giving the students experience in the tools and materials used in the industrial world, and the development of an understanding of modern in- dustry and its associated problems. The purpose of this course is not to perfect skills for a specific occupation, but to give the students opportuni- ties of using their hands and tools in creating in- dustrial products. From this experience the stu- dents can determine the types of occupations they would like and would be best suited for. The Vocational Beauty Culture Course of the curriculum is limited to girls of the iunior and the senior classes. lt is arranged for those girls who are interested in making hairdressing and cosmetology their occupation after graduating from high school, and it carries with it certain re- quirements limited to this course. The theoretical and practical instruction given in class qualify the students to take the Pennsylvania State Board Examination in the field. The girls enrolled in the Vocational Beauty Culture Course spend three clock hours each day in the beauty culture laboratory, and the re- mainder of the school day in classrooms taking courses necessary to the completion of their high school training. The final course included in the curriculum is the Vocational Home Economics Course, lim- ited again to girls. This course provides instruc- tion and experience in the basic aspects of per- sonal, family, and home living. The girls who specialize in this course are prepared to become homemakers from the scientific, artistic, and in- telligent approach. The Vocational Home Economics Course is fiexible, so that a girl who has interests in other fields may prepare herself to be admitted to col- lege or nurses' training schools by selecting those subiects, as electives, which will satisfy the en- trance requirements. ln a high school, such as the Farrell Senior High School, in which the curriculum is so planned that the interests of many types of indi- viduals will be cared for, any student who ap- plies himself at all will find something in the varied courses of study which will make of him a useful citizen, or help establish him in some vo- cation, and aid him in adjusting himself to the life, the people, and the situations he will meet upon leaving the Farrell Senior High School. Mr. Frank Kozar Chief of Maintenance 21 To the Class of 1952 At the Senior Farewell Assembly, May 19, 1952 Seniors, I did not intend to talk much-but in my recollections of conversations with many of you during the year about your work, your fu- ture, I detected a note of uncertainty and pessi- mism, wholly out of place on this threshold of your new life. This age of challenge should be met with tools and weapons manned and fired by the optimism and the enthusiasm of your youth. You should shove aside those who would advise extreme caution against any hope for progress or success in these so called uncertain, perilous times. But are these perilous times? This age, you are told, is filled with perplexity, uncertainty, in- stability. The timid and the pessimistic speak of impending doom. They look backward and long for the good old days . If only they could get back to the simplicities and virtues of the past-the Golden Age! But was there ever such an age? Probably not. For in every age, beset with its problems, there have been those who have looked longingly backward, hoping to re- capture the past. If you'll recall on a recent bul- letin I quoted a saying: These trying times are the good old days, you'lI be longing for a few years from now. Consider our own history. From the begin- ning we have fought foreign powers from with- out, and Indians, the wilderness, and economic depressions from within. We have survived thir- teen depressions, five of them major ones. But we came through them all. The prophets of doom have ever been with us. An Assyrian inscription dated 2,800 years before Christ carries a modern note, Our earth is degenerate in these latter days. Bribery and corruption are common. Children no longer obey their parents. Every man wants to write a book, and the end of all things is evidently ap- proaching. In 1774, Sir Horace Walpole said, For my part, I take Europe to be worn out. When Vol- taire dies, we may say goodnight. And in 1790, William Wilberfores gloomily observed: I dare not marry, the future is so dark and unsettled. Half a century later, Disraeli said, In indus- try, commerce, and agriculture, there is no hope. And Wellington in 1851 said, I thank God that I am spared the ruin that is gathering around us. When the transatlantic cable marked a new era in communications, the New Monthly fMarch, 18571 declared: The world is too big and too fast, too many wars, crimes, casualties, excite- ments, and marvels, so many shouting at the world with all their might, everything is high pressure, human nature cannot endure so much. St. Francis was asked as he cultivated his garden: If you knew that death awaited you at sundown, what would you do? He replied, Why, l'd go on hoeing my garden. And so it is that the people of every age have answered the prophets of doom. In spite of dire predictions, these are good times. If we can wage peace as effectively as we wage war, our age may prove of great promise. In the words of Thomas Wolfe, who said it in, You Can't Go Home Again : I think the true discovery of America is before us. I think the true fulfillment of our spirit, of our people, of our mighty and immortal land is yet to come. Our time is a good time to live. It chal- lenges the best in us. And, like St. Francis, why should we not go on hoeing our garden? This is a good time to seek a iob, to acquire an education, to take a trip, to start a savings account, to invent something, to get married, to let the dead past bury the dead and to plan for the future. It is a good time to pledge anew, Our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor . As Emer- son well said, This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we know what to do with it. Opportunity will always be with you. People do not disappear. Only politics die. Em- pires, statesmen, wars wind their tiresome way through history, but the soil remains, and the people remain. Opportunity will always be around, wait- ing for you. I hope I have iniected an area of hope and optimism into your outlook into your future. And now, seniors, we the administration and the teachers extend to each of you our con- gratulations and friendly wishes for future suc- cess. As you leave today we wish you God- speed, and may God bless you all and keep you, until we meet again-goodbye. A. J. Pintar LUCILLE ANN AGRESTI April 29, Sharon, Pennsylvania. Commercial Course. The Fiftieth Class As upper classmen at the Junior High School, we were quite sure of ourselves, but upon being promoted to sophomores and to the Sen- ior High School, we somehow lost our self-confi- dence. lt took awhile for us to get accustomed to the newnezs of everything, but with the help of our advisor, Miss Margaret Roux, we soon learned to take our places in the activities of the school. For our officers we chose Louis Rosati, president, Joseph Scarmack, vice president, and Lois Marks, secretary. Priscilla Hetra represented our class as the sophomore homecoming attend- ant. With the atmosphere created by the prom decorations we had a successful Freshmanfopho- more Spring Frolic. We looked to our junior year with wonder . . . what was this chemistry and plane geometry all about? Returning for our junior year was something to which we all looked forward, for it meant, among other things, the Junior-Senior Prom. We chose Peggy Williams as the Homecoming Queen's attendant. Following the Sharon-Farrell game our class sponsored its first affair-the Harvest Dance. This was a year to be proud of for our football squad won the WPlAL crown, and our basketball team, including our own Anthony DeCello, Paul Flint, William Johnson, Wilbert Shannon, and Russell DeCarmine, took the Class AA state championship. Our officers, Donald Bechtold, John Lambros, and Priscilla Hetra, under Mrs. Julia Jenkin's guidance, began to plan for the Prom, which we sponsored for our senior classmates. By May 9, the gymnasium had been magically transformed into a quaint French cafe, and thanks to our mothers, the affair lasted until the wee hours of the morning. The following Friday we had the privilege of defeat- ing the seniors in the annual Field Day events. The confusion and last minute rehearsals for Bac- calaureate and Commencement gave the juniors something to think about. Only one more year cf school for us and then .... Our big year had arrived. Suddenly we found ourselves as seniors. lt was hard to believe that we had actually reached the object of our many dreams. Leading our class through its last year were Russell DeCarmine, Donald Bechtold, and Lois Marks, advised by Miss Esther A. B. Zentz. The Reflector Staff immediately started compiling facts to be put into the school annual. Photographs were taken, calling cards and invi- tations ordered, and memory books filled with treasured recollections. Martha Broscoe, our Homecoming Queen, was attended by Nana Ba- loch and Shirley Gutowski. Students today, leaders tomorrow was our motto throughout the year. A beautiful sight was the Prom which the juniors gave us on May 8, and the Post-Prom which was given by the P. T. A. Then followed the many end-of-the-year activities, days that seemed to drag in previous years sped quickly. Competition was heavy May 15-the Juniors and we held our annual Field Meet. On Class Day after enjoying our Senior Breakfast and attend- ing the Farewell Assembly, we proudly wore our navy slacks, powder blue jerseys, and yellow carnations as we left for a day of fun at Idora Park. But then the laughter was over, for it was the night of the Baccalaureate Service. ln laugh- ter's place was a new feeling-one of sadness, accomplishment, and joy mingled together. Seri- ous now, we sat listening to the religious mes- sage. Two days later, after hearing an address given by an alumnus of Farrell High School, we received our diplomas. We, the members of the Fiftieth Graduating Class, were now beginning a new life apart from each other. We would travel our own highways, follow our own goals, and hope for a rich and full life in an immense new world. Sidney McDonald recovered an Academy fumble, and two plays later, Joe Scarmack plung- ed over from the two-yard line for Farrell's first tally. Bill Johnson converted the extra point. The Night Riders added another score after Myers completed a pass to Johnson on the eighteen. Scarmack then raced to the goal on the next play. Johnson's second conversion completed the scoring. in the last period, scored three times. Featuring Scarmack's running and Myers' again in the third quarter, but the Night Riders, passing, Farrell defeated Meadville in the first home game. The Night Riders' first score came when Myers tossed a fifteen-yard pass to Alex McCoy, who raced over the goal line, Johnson converted. ln the third quarter, Scarmack cut off right tackle and ran nineteen yards for a touchdown. Farrell's final touchdown came in the last quarter on a two-yard plunge by Clar- ence Austin, Johnson's placement was again good. Proof of Farrell's brilliant defensive line play was shown when, with four minutes remain- ing in the game, the visitors picked up their first down. Farrell 33 Har-Brack 21 Farrell gained their first league victory by impressively defeating a favored AA Har-Brack eleven 33-2l. The Night Riders came from be- hind three times, finally to take the lead and win. Scarmack turned in one of the greatest offensive feats in the district by scoring all five touchdowns. After trailing 7-O in the first ses- sion, Farrell tied the score when Scarmack plung- ed over for the touchdown and then passed to McDonald for the extra point. Har-Brack's Gil- christ put them ahead, but Alex McCoy ran back the kick-off eighty-three yards, enabling Scar- mack to score from the one. The Tigers scored Farrell 24 Ambridge 25 A hard fought 25-24 loss to Ambridge marred Farrell's Homecoming game. The home team's failure to cash in on extra points was a deciding factor. The Night Riders scored first when Alex McCoy hit paydirt to end a sixty-three yard touchdown march. However, the Bridgers were not to be outdone, and when the half end- ed they held a 19-6 margin. In the last half, a pass and a forty-three yard run added twelve more points to the Riders' score, but Ambridge bounded back with a long kick off return and several plays later put across their last tally. Two plays before the end of the game, an alert Alex McCoy picked up an Ambridge fumble and raced across the goal line. Johnson's effort to tie the game with a placement failed. Farrell 6 New Castle 14 Overcome by the New Castle High School squad, the Paulekasmen dropped their second game in a row. The keyed-up Red Hurricanes were in complete control throughout the game except for a few minutes in the final session when Flint caught a Myers' pass and lateraled to Johnson, who raced twenty-two yards for the touchdown. New Castle's scores came in the first and last quarters. The 1952 Football Season Farrell 7 Beaver Falls 20 After fighting nip and tuck for three quar- ters with Beaver Falls in a tied contest, Farrell gave in to two Tiger touchdowns in the last per- iod. The Night Riders' only tally came early in the game when Flint received a fourteen yard touchdown pass from Myers. Beaver Falls took advantage of an intercepted pass, a short kick and a fumble to do all their scoring, with hard- running Joe Walton doing the damage. Farrell 34 Akron Garfield 0 Farrell, on the rebound from three previous defeats, took complete rule of the game, defeat- ing the Ohioans 34-0. Accounting for the first score was Alex McCoy, who ran seventy-five yards to the Garfield two and then plunged over. Scarmack's run, Myers' pass to Flint and John- son's two conversions put Farrell ahead 20-O at halftime. Scarmack scored on an intercepted pass in the third quarter, Askerneese plunged over from the one, and Johnson kicked two place- ments to end Farrell's scoring. Farrell 27 Altoona 6 When the Night Riders dropped the Moun- tain Lions 27-6, their powerful ground attacks were sparked by Paul Flint. He scored FarrelI's first two touchdowns, while Scarmack accounted for the other two. Three out of Johnson's four attempted placements were good. To avert a shut-out, Altoona tallied in the last quarter mak- ing the score 27-6. Farrell 0 Sharon 26 By defeating the Paulekasmen 26-0, the Sharon High Tigers closed their most successful season in many years. Although the Night Riders went to the Sharon twenty yard line on several occasions, they were unable to score. Farrell fans watched as McHugh, Woods and Shephard scored to give the Night Riders their fourth setback, as against five wins. Playing their final game for Farrell were nine senior members: Fred Jones, Fred DeBonis, John Myers, William Allen, Edwin Ondich, Paul Flint, Joseph Scarmack, Fred Sok, and William Johnson, who were trained by Coach Anthony Paulekas and Assistant Coaches John Popadak, John Gennock, and Joseph Tommins. Paul Flint was elected honorary captain of the team by members of the squad. The 1952 Football Record September At Erie Academy ..... ......, 0 Farrell ....... ....,.... Coach Edward McCluskey Warren-25 Farrell-50 The Farrell High School state champions opened their 1952- 1953 cage season with a victory over the Warren Harding High School Panthers. Unable to get started, the Steelers found themselves on the short end of an 8-6 first-quarter score. It wasn't until the second quarter that the McCluskeymen started rolling. The 20-14 halftime score showed Farrell in the lead, and by the end of the contest the Steelers had doubled their opponents' score 50-25. Farrell's tremendous defensive game limited the Ohio cagers to one field goal and one foul conversion in the last quarter. Ursuline-37 Farrell-46 By defeating Youngstown Ursuline 46-37, the Steelers copped their second victory of the season in an easy fashion. Coach McCluskey made frequent substitutions throughout the game. Farrell's defensive play was again tops as the Steelers held Ursuline without a 'Field goal in the first period and per- mitted them only one two-pointer in the third quarter. Paul Flint was high-scorer for the evening with thirteen points, while Anthony DeCello and Wilbert Shannon each garnered eleven markers. Washington-40 Farrell-42 ln Washington, the Steelers faced a revengeful team. In last year's WPIAL play-offs Farrell defeated the Presidents end- ing Washington's twenty-three game winning streak. Out- fought in the first three quarters, the Steelers trailed by two points at the end of each period. Two counsecutive set shots by Flint, a jump shot from the foul line by Kemp and Strizzi's two free throws gave Farrell the necessary points. The game ended with Farrell leading 42-40. Youngstown South-46 Farrell-55 For the third time in the season, Farrell triumphed over an Ohio squad. The Steelers' 17-8 first-quarter lead was never relinquished, nor did the local team face any real danger for the duration of the game. Although South out-scored Farrell 16-9 in the last session, the visitors were unable to overcome the lead. Flint was again high-scorer for the victorious Steel- ers with twelve points. Akrcn Ellet-52 Farrell-62 Once again Farrell faced a victory-minded opponent, the 15-15 deadlock at the end of the initial period was proof of that. Out-scoring the Ohio quintet 16-10 in the second ses- sion, the Steelers held a 31-25 halftime lead. Akron's third quarter rally, which narrowed the margin to five points, was cut short by Farrell's fine defensive play. Westinghouse-48 Farrell-58 ln the opening round of the first annual Lion's Invitational Tournament, the Steelers faced a Westinghouse five, seeking revenge for their loss to Farrell in last year's Western Regional finals. After a nip-and-tuck first half, Farrell pulled away to win by ten points. DeCello with twenty-one counters and Flint with eighteen were the main-stays in the Steeler attack. Swoyerville-45 Farrell-70 Rolling over Swoyerville in the final round of the Lions' Tourney, the McCluskeymen captured first place honors. After a 13-8 lead in the initial period, Farrell was never in danger. Charles Kemp netted twenty points to lead Farrell, Flint was second high with nineteen markers. Besides the gold trophy awarded to the championship squad, Flint and DeCello each received an award as the most valuable players of the series. Punxsutawney-38 Farrell-59 Winding up their exhibition campaign, Farrell easily de- feated Punxsutawney 59-38. The Steelers' tight defense held the visitors to only two field goals in the first half, one in each of the first two sessions. Donald Talbert, one of the reserves who saw action, led the home team with thirteen points on six two-pointers and one foul conversion. New Castle-44 Farrell--70 Farrell showed signs of again being the top club in the section when they defeated New Castle's Red Hurricanes in the league opener. In the second half Farrell broke the game wide open by garnering thirty-three points and permitting their op- ponents only seventeen. Kemp's outstanding play and expert shooting accounted for twenty-one points. Ellwood City-30 Farrell-61 Registering their tenth straight victory, Farrell won 61-30 over the Ellwood City Wolverines. Farrell took an early 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, and at halftime they had stretched their margin to twenty points, leading 34-14. Out- standing defensive play by the Steelers prevailed throughout the contest. Ellwood City's only field goals in the first half came in the first five minutes of play. Netting seventeen mark- ers, Anthony DeCello led the Steelers. Paul Flint, who played an excellent board game, was second high with thirteen points. Varsity Basketball Rochester-43 Farrell-94 The 1952-1953 Steelers will go down in the record books as the highest scoring Blue and Gold quintet in history. Farrell started its offensive drive in the second quarter scoring twenty- four points to lead 42-21 at halftime. Throughout the last half the Farrell High mentor used only iuniors and sophomores, who scored a total of 52 points. Robert Goda paced Farrell with sixteen points, as six Steelers broke into the double-figure scoring column. Ambridge-47 Farrell-60 After a hectic first quarter, Farrell defeated Ambridge 60-47. Paul Flint split the hoops with eight field goals and five foul conversions, and Charles Kemp displayed outstanding board worls as the Steelers captured their third league battle. Russell DeCarmine, who was inserted into the lineup in the sce- ond session, gave Farrell its added sparls. leaver Falls-53 Fa rrell-63 Overcoming a six point deficit in the second period, the McCluslseymen defeated a stubborn Tiger quintet 63-53. After trailing 15-12 at the end of the initial quarter, Farrell had a 29-25 halftime lead. ln the final period both squads scored twenty-one points. DeCello was high for the Farrell squad with sixteen counters. Allquippa-42 Fa rrell-65 'lightening their hold on first place in Section Ill, the Steel- ers downed a taller Aliquippo five 65-42. An early margin of twelve points enabled Farrell to win with ease. Outstanding offensive play netted the local team twenty-two field goals. High scorers for Farrell were Flint and Kemp with twenty-one and nineteen points respectively. Sharon--45 Farrell-44 Farrells' initial loss of the season to Sharon, 45-44, placed the Steelers in a first place deadlock with the Laycoclcmen. The set-back ended a fourteen-game winning streak. Sharon lumped to an early 'l6-11 lead, but the fighting Steelers out- scored Sharon 17-11 in the second quarter to hold a 28-27 lead at halftime. The Bengals' third quarter offensive drive put them ahead to stay. A last quarter rally by Farrell failed as the Steelers lost the one-point decision. Paul Flint was high with sixteen markers. New Castle-73 Farrell-62 Dropping their second straight game, the Steelers fell into second place leaving Sharon in sole possession of the top spot in the league. Farrell's loss actually came at the foul line as they matched New Castle High School's field goals but con- verted only twenty fouls to their opponents' thirty-one. Flint was again high scorer. Ellweod City-27 ' Farrell-61 Limiting Ellwood City to only eleven goals, Farrell dis- played fine offensive form by dropping the Wolverines 61-27. Coach McCluslsey's decision to use next year's squad proved favorable, for they scored twenty-two points in the last quar- ter. High man was Robert Goda with fourteen points. Ha r-Brock-40 Farrell-75 ln a non-league tilt, Farrell displayed their early-season form by defeating Har-Brack 75-40. While holding the Tigers to nine two-pointers, the Steelers scored twenty-nine field goals. Kemp and McCoy, with twenty-three and fifteen points respectively, were the high-scorers for Farrell. Ambridge-65 Farrell-82 Until the Steelers invaded Ambridge's court, the Bridger's had been undefeated on their home court for the 1952-1953 season. The Steelers clinched the game as early as the second quarter, leading 47-29 at half-time. Anthony DeCello peppered the nets with eight field goals and seven fouls for a total of twenty-three points. Kemp, with twenty-one counters to his credit, was close behind DeCello. Beaver Falls--42 Farrell-66 By downing Beaver Falls, the Steelers lrept alive their hopes of capturing the Section Ill crown for the fourth straight sea- son. Rangy Donald Talbert netted all of Farrell's four field- ers in the second period as he paced the Steelers to their 66-42 win with seventeen points. DeCello accounted for thir- teen markers. Aliquippa-55 Fa rrell--50 Avenging previous defeats, the Aliquippa Indians set back Farrell 55-50 in a heartbreaking battle. Although the McClus- lceymen led at the end of the first period 18-8, they couldn't sink many field goals in either of the next two quarters. With thirty seconds remaining, Farrell drew within two points of the Quips, but they couldn't gain the necessary points to move ahead. Sharon-40 Fa rrell-47 Although the section title had already been decided, the Sharon-Farrell game was all that it should be. With seconds remaining in the first period DeCello netted a field goal to break a 14-14 deadlocls and put Farrell ahead for good. De- Cello scored eighteen points, while Flint and Don Talbert netted eleven and ten points respectively. The victory marked the Steelers' fifty-fourth straight win on their home court. Playing their final game for Farrell were four senior boys- Anthony DeCello, Russell DeCarmine, Paul Flint and Wilbert Shannon. The 1952-1953 Farrell High School basketball team, with these boys, completed a successful season with nineteen victories and three defeats. Mrs. Virginia Pirrung, journalism instructor, was advisor and Miss Anne Gaidics, assistant advisor. At this time Miss Olga Gaidics began her services as fac- ulty business manager. Published bi-weekly, The Night Rider was eighteen inches in length and twelve inches in wdith. Shirley Rosenberg was the first executive editor. Students who have been editors-in-chief of The Night Rider are Neal Russo, Betty Rose Broderick, Annette Chiel, Harold Rosenblum, Jeanne Sanger, Victor Danilov, Juno Shaffer, Betty Rothenberg, Lydia Zahariou, William An- derson, Howard Rasenberg, Elaine Lobl, Julentha Frank, Martha Bruce, Phyllis Kirshenbaum, Cath- erine Brown, and Betty Edney. Today, the dimensions and policy of pub- lishing bi-weekly are identical to those of the first issue. However, a stream-lined make-up was adapted this year, including the elimination of column rules and the use of a new head-line style. Mrs. Mary J. Nestich is the advisor, Miss Alice Griffith, literary advisor, and Miss Olga Gojdics continues as business manager. Volunteers from the entire student body work as reporters, typists, artists and photog- raphers. All iournalism students are eligible for editorial positions. Social events, clubs, classes, dramatics, vo- cational departments, and other faculty and stu- dent activities are given recognition an pages one and four of each issue. Page two is called the feature page. Items concerning fashions, sa- ciety and holidays, and poems and art work of the students are included on this page. Recently, a new character, named Madame Zulu, was in- troduced to make predictions. The sports page serves in relating the vari- ous athletic events: football, basketball, track, lzaseball, and notes on the participants. The Night Rider is a Farrell tradition which will live through the years as a part of Farrell Senior High School and Farrell. i The Night Rider Stall 10 4 s 9. v 'wr , ,J.- 'O ff -I9 s ?. of f - in Mrs. Mary J.
