J te guidance program Guidance is not to be thought of as something apart from the regular educational program or something to be super-imposed upon it. Guidance is conceived to be individualized education. That is, it is assumed that the personality of every individual child is important and worth developing, not only for his own good but also for that of the state of which he is a citizen. Furthermore, he must understand and appreciate the significance of his own personality and his own powers. Guidance is the process of giving intelligent attention to a person according to his individual needs, interests and aptitudes. It aims to give the individual such help as will enable him to develop into a fully adjusted personality and a successful economic unit. As applied to our secondary school, guidance is thought of as an organized service designed to give systematic aid to pupils in making adjustments to various tvpes of problems which they must meet—educational, vocational, health, moral. social, civic, and personal. We endeavor to help the pupil to know himself as an individual and as a member of society; to enable him to correct certain of his shortcomings that interfere with progress; to know about vocations and professions so that he may intelligently choose and ANGELO M. GRANDE Guidance Co-ordinator A. B., Grove City College M. A., University of Alabama Bucknell University prepare for a life career; and to assist him in the constant discovery and development of abiding creative and recreational interests. These objectives are achieved through a better understanding among the school, the home and the community; through adequate and specific data of the individual pupil secured through a system of cumulative records and reports; through a comprehensive and effective system of counseling and guidance; and through a follow-up of the pupil after he leaves school. The services of competent counselors are always available. Everv staff member has some responsibility for guidance and does much to meet some of the pupils’ needs. As an aid in the guidance task, measurements and tests of various types, standardized or others, are administered and used with full knowledge of their values and limitations. In summary, the primary purpose of the Guidance Program is to provide services aimed at improving the development and adjustment of individual pupils educationally, vocationally, socially and economically thereby meeting their special needs, not otherwise provided for in the curriculum.
