Our Democracy and Education The theme of the democracies of the world today is: “Preserve the democratic way of life.” The best way to preserve democracy is to provide the means by which our children may be well-educated. An opportunity for education for all our youth is America’s noblest contribution to civilization, and no parent should allow the opportunity for education of his children to pass by—for no man can ever leave a richer legacy to the world than a well-educated family. Our schools teach the significance of democracy, its importance, and the reason for requiring that each citizen take his part in the life and work of our country. As citizens of a democratic society, we must be committed to the theory that education pays, that it is vital to industrial and economic sufficiency, that it is an important factor in personal satisfaction and enjoyment, and that it is basic for democratic citizenship. All capable youth, therefore, must be encouraged to obtain a certain degree of educational proficiency. Education today is more than a study of the classics and ologies. It is fundamentally the teaching of youth and the motivation of their desires for the better things in life, and the aid in developing the skills and abilities to attain, use, and enjoy these better things in life. Here in Farrell Senior High School by a wide selection of courses, we offer the youth of our community the basic education for that adequacy which will enable them to live a full life. The Academic Course is planned for college preparation; the Commercial Course for training accountants, stenographers, bookkeepers and clerks; the Vocational-Industrial Course for developing salable skills and those understandings and attitudes that make a worker an intelligent and productive participant in economic life; the Vocational Beauty Culture Course for a career as a skilled beauty technician; the Vocational Home Economics Course for training for the pursuits and occupations connected with the home; and the General Course for providing a broad civic, scientific, and cultural training for a life of intelligent, active citizenship. To these present courses we will add Driver Education, to make our citizens more efficient and safe drivers of motor vehicles, and Distributive Education to prepare young people to participate in the retail selling phase of our economic life, to broadeo their opportunities for employment, to make them better consumers. In addition to the regular courses of study, a guidance counseling program is offered that functions through the office of the guidance director in collaboration with the testing director, the faculty, and the administration. The purpose of this program is to offer through personal interview's, group and individual tests, and group lectures, a means of discovering something about the abilities, interest and needs of our students, and using the knowledge gained for their benefit. Our aim is to develop an enlightened citizenry, for we believe that the ultimate strength of our democracy lies in the minds of its citizens. ANTHONY J. PINTAR, Principal of Farrell Senior High School
