« The 19 4 8 Reflector Alma Mater Hail to the Blue and Gold, Hail ever hail! Thy sons with voices bold Thee ever hail. Our hearts will always be Loyal and true.. Hail ever hail to thee. Our Gold and Blue. The 19 4 8 Reflector Volume Thirty-two PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS Farrell Senior High School .... Farrell, Pennsylvania DEDICATION To Mr. Ralph E. Dresch, Director of Athletics, Teacher of Problems of Democracy, Advisor of the Hi-Y Club, and an Alumnus of our school, we dedicate “The 1948 Reflector” in appreciation and in recognition of his fine friendship, his excellent sportsmanship, and his splendid services to our school and to our community. Dedication MR. RALPH E. DRESCH A Tribute MRS. NAN SCOWDEN In appreciation of her twenty-nine years of successful and loyal service as a teacher and a principal in the Elementary Schools of Farrell, Pennsylvania, the boys and the girls of our schools today and yesterday as well as the teachers and the administration of the Farrell School District wish Mrs. Nan Scowden the best of health and happiness for the balance of her life which we hope will be many years to come. In Memoriam MISS GWENDOLYN BROWN To Miss Gwendolyn Brown, a teacher and a friend, who served faithfully and well thousands of the boys and the girls jn the Farrell Public Schools during the past twenty-two years, we pay honor and respect to her memory—a memory that will live forever in the hearts and the minds of her friends and her former students. Miss Brown passed away on October 18, 1947. To Miss Gwendolyn Brown SHE LIVED A LIFE What was her creed? I do not know her creed, I only know That here below, she walked the common road And lifted many a load, lightened the task, Brightened the day for others toiling on a weary way This, her only meed; I do not know her creed. What was her creed? I never heard her speak Of visions rapturous, of Alpine peak Of doctrine, dogma, new or old; But this I know, she was forever bold To stand alone, to face the challenge of each day, And live the truth, so far as she could see— The truth that evermore makes free. Her creed? I care not what her creed; Enough that never yielded she to greed, But served the children in their daily need; Plucked many a thorn and planted many a flower; Glorified the service of each hour; Had faith in God, herself, and fellow-men;— Perchance she never thought in terms of creed; I only know she lived a life, in deed! —H. We had hardly become accustomed to the maze we found ourselves in when we elected our class officers. Under the guidance of Mr. Stephen Marin, our class advisor, wfe chose Thomas Ballish, president; Roland Tallarico, vice-president, and Gloria Chiodo, secretary. Later on, when we got our bearings, so to speak, we took part in all extra-curricular activities. Our Spring Dance, which we sponsored as the last event in our Freshman year, had all the trimmings of a Junior-Senior Prom. With our first year in Farrell High School rapidly drawing to a close, we looked forward to our Sophomore year. We, the Class of 1948, again entered Farrell High School in September, 1945— one step nearer our goal. We were no longer Freshies, but Sophomores, who were quick to show the Freshmen that we were their upper-classmen. Under the capable leadership of Miss Margaret Roux, our class advisor, we re-elected Thomas Ballish as president, with Clarence Dobrowolski and Mildred Klapack serving as vice-president and secretary, respectively. Again we participated very actively in extra-curricular affairs—the Canteen was one of them. In the spring, we held a joint Freshman-Sophomore dance, and this highly successful affair marked the close of our first two years in high school. Under the direction of Miss Julia Wallace, now Mrs. William Jenkins, we elected Thomas Ballish, president; Francis Petrillo, vice-president, and Mildred Klapack, secretary for our Junior class officers. As attendants to the Senior Harvest Queen, we chose Eleen Zahariou and Serena Tizio to represent our class. The last social affair of our Junior year was the annual Junior-Senior Prom, at which we played hosts to the Seniors. Our sincerest thanks go to Mr. Paul Komar for assisting in the decorations which employed a “Blossom Time” theme, and also to faculty members who helped make the Prom a success, and one which we will look back on with many pheasant memories. Thus, with three successful years behind us, we entered our Senior year in 1947 with Miss Esther Zentz as our class advisor. Under her direction, we elected William Gabella as president, Howard Allen as vice-president, and Gerald Paulson as secretary. Our first social activity was the Homecoming Dance with Eleen Zahariou reigning as Queen and Dolores Haney and Serena Tizio acting as Senior Attendants. Next, we chose “Forever Forward” as our class motto; powder blue and brown as our class colors; and the red rose as our class flower. Finally, we were guests of the Juniors at the Junior-Senior Prom on May 7, 1948. On May 17, we, the Class of 1948, held our class breakfast in the cafeteria, after which we presented our Farewell Program to the student body in the auditorium. After the presentation of the cap and gown by William Gabella to Walter Kaletka, Junior class president, we left for a day of fun at Conneaut Lake for our Class Day activities. We attended Baccalaureate services on May 23. On May 25, we attended our Commencement exercises in traditional cap and gown and prepared to commence into the world— to help write the peace and to help preserve it. The 1947 Football Season With Coach Anthony Paulekas succeeding Coach LeRoy “Hank” Day as grid mentor, the Farrell High School football team left for football camp at the Great Lakes Camp for Boys on August 18. Under the hottest August sun seen in years. Coach Paulekas and his squad prepared for the opening game with Greenville. Coach Paulekas appointed Francis Petrillo, Paul Adams and Thomas Ballish co-captains for the forthcoming season. SEPTEMBER 5 GREENVILLE 6-18 A well conditioned Night Rider Squad opened its 1947 season with an impressive 18-6 triumph over Greenville. Keryan started the show with a forty yard touchdown jaunt, in the first quarter. The second quarter was comparatively quiet. Greenville came to life in the third quarter when a touchdown march was set up by a pass interception. After a series of plays, Greenville scored. Early in the final quarter, Ballish recovered a blocked kick by Nicastro in the Greenville end zone for a touchdown. Farrell again capitalized on another blocked punt for the final tally of the night. The Night Rider forward wall was superb in limiting Greenville to eleven net yards gained by rushing. The 1947 Football Season SEPTEMBER 12 MEADVILLE 7-7 The next Friday evening, the Night Riders went to battle with the Meadville Bull Dogs. In a drenching rain storm, the Night Riders scored shortly before halftime. It was fleet-footed Keryan who skirted left end for 16 yards and a touchdown to climax a 45 yard touchdown drive. On a bad pass from center, A1 Paulekas was forced to run for the extra point instead of kicking. Opening the third quarter, the Bull Dogs scored on a 77-yard touchdown play. Although the statistics were heavily in Farrell’s favor, “fumbleitis” stopped them from scoring any more. SEPTEMBER 19 VANDERGRIFT 12-0 Vandergrift, defending WPIAL champion with a host of veterans, greeted the returning Night Riders, with their first defeat of the current grid campaign. Flashing a deceptive offense coupled with fine passing, Vandergrift scored twice in the first half. The Night Riders were definitely in the game all the way, but they w'ere never able to cross the final marker. The forward wall of Farrell again played magnificently, and the “Vandies” just couldn’t penetrate it. SEPTEMBER 26 ELLWOOD CITY 18-0 Farrell High invaded the Wolverine stadium for their second WPIAL game and ran into a keyed up Ellwood City squad who completely mastered the game throughout. Scoring once in each of the first, second, and third quarters, the W olv erin)es were never in trouble. This was definitely the worst form the Night Riders were to show' all season. Although the Night Riders tried gamely to fight back, they never had the drive enough to score. The game ended with the Night Riders on the Ellwood City 2-yard line. OCTOBER 3 CAMPBELL MEMORIAL 6-7 Determined to show' better form than they did the previous week at Ellwood City, the Night Riders battled and fought Campbell Memorial for three scoreless quarters. During this time, Farrell missed several opportunities by driving deep into Memorial’s territory only to have their attack bog down. Memorial scored first on a 30-yard touchdown run, off tackle, midway through the final canto. Time was running out and everything looked dark when suddenly the Paulekasmen connected for a touchdown on a pass from Keryan to Staul who lateraled to Yazvac who ran the remaining six yards to paydirt. With the crowd tense and w'aiting, Samuel Nicastro calmly booted the extra point, winning the game. OCTOBER 10 NEW CASTLE 6-6 Playing an impressive brand of determined football, the hard charging Night Riders knocked previously undefeated and untied New' Castle from the ranks of the WPIAL AA with a 6-6 deadlock. This eliminated them from title consideration. Before 10,000 fans the 18 point underdogs battled the Red Hurricanes completely off iheir feet. Keryan scored first for Farrell on a fourth dowrn by smashing over from the 3-yard line. New Castle scored on the final play of the game, via a desperate pass. Hailstock and Keryan were the big ground gainers on the attack for Farrell. The stalwart “unsung heroes” of the line stopped the vaunted New Castle running attack cold. The 1947 Football Season OCTOBER 17 BEAVER FALLS 27-13 A brilliant passing attack and heads-up football helped the Beaver Falls “Tigers” hand Farrell their third defeat of the season 27-13. Beaver Falls scored first, but Farrell roared back up the field and scored themselves. Beaver Falls scored again in the second period, but Farrell scored again just before halftime. This left the score at halftime 14-13 in favor of Beaver Falls. In the last half, it was Beaver Falls who pushed over two more touchdowns to bring the final total to 27-13. Keryan scored both Farrell touchdowns. Nicastro connected for one out of two extra points. OCTOBER 24 ROCHESTER 12-12 The valiant Night Riders won for themselves the title of “Leading Spoilers” in the WPIAL by eliminating the Rochester Rams from the ranks of the undefeated and thereby squelching all of Rochester’s hopes for title consideration. Just two weeks ago Farrell had dealt New Castle the same fate. Rochester came to Farrell with plenty of morale, pep, and spirit. However, they came to town on the wrong night, for the Night Riders had been inspired by a loyal and determined student body. Rochester scored first, but on the kickoff that followed, the Night Riders marched up the field and scored with Hailstock going over from the 4. Farrell scored again early in the final quarter on a pass from Hailstock to Keryan. They held this lead until late in the quarter. Rochester then pushed over the final tally, tying the score. NOVEMBER 7 SHARON 0-0 Concluding a successful season, the Night Riders battled the Tigers from neighboring Sharon to a scoreless deadlock. Twice Farrell penetrated deep into Sharon’s territory only to be halted by a stubborn bunch of Tigers. Fan-ell was as close as Vz yard from the final white marker. The closest Sharon was to the Farrell 20. A highly touted Sharon aerial attack was checked so closely that Sharon completed only two passes during the game. The final game of the year brought praise to all of the boys on the Night Rider squad. Thus in the four years of high school for our class, we own the dubious distinction of never losing a football game to Sharon. The crowd and both teams showed extremely fine sportsmanship. 1947 FOOTBALL RECORD September 5 Greenville 6 Farrell 18 September 12 Meadville 7 Farrell 7 September 19 Vandergrift 12 Farrell 0 September 26 October 3 18 Farrell 0 Campbell Memorial 6 Farrell 7 October 10 New Castle Farrell 6 October 17 October 24 Reaver Falls 27 Farrell 13 Rochester 12 Farrell 12 November 7 Sharon 0 Farrell 0 Varsity Football 64 Varsity Football Squad, Senior Players, Football Reserves Varsity Football Squad First Row: George Keryan, Gasper Guerino, Alfonso James, Emanuel Hailstock, Victor DeVito, Frances Petrillo, Paul Adams, Thomas Ballish, Claude Gibson, Samuel Leyshock, Julio Perri, Samuel Nicastro, Gerald Staul, Alfred Paulekas. Earl Carless, Coach Tudor E. Lewis, Assistant Coach Felix Bonadio Basketball Coaches Ford City 53, Farrell 31:—With Tudor Lewis at the helm after a year’s leave of absence, the Farrell hoopsters opened their 1947-48 season. A veteran Ford City aggregation showed no respect for Farrell’s high pre-season rating as they thoroughly trounced the Steelers 53-31 at Ford City. The first quarter showed both teams hitting the cords with rapid frequency to make the score 16-14. A Ford City rally in the second quarter increased the margin to 28-17. The “Glassers” unleashed a barage of points to run the score to 45-26 at the third period. In the final period the action slowed down due to the frequent subbing with Ford City winning 53-31. Jankovich and Hammond had 10 and 9 points respectively to lead the Farrell scoring. Barberton 37, Farrell 46:—This game saw the Lewismen beginning to play the ball they were capable of playing. They completely bewildered the hometown Barberton team by winning easily 46-37. Although the margin of victory wasn’t very much in the scoring column, Farrell showed some fine shooting and ball handling, which was absent in the Ford City clash. Farrell led 11-7 at the first quarter and made 15 more points in the second period to lead 26-21 at halftime. The margin was widened to 33-25 and finally 46-37. Danilov, Hammond, and Jankovich provided the scoring punch with 13, 12, and 11 points respectively. North Huntington 27, Farrell 55:—A smooth functioning attack of the Lewismen enabled them to romp over North Huntington 55-27. Off to a fast start the Steelers were never in trouble. Although the teams w'ere matched evenly in height, the bank-boards were completly controlled by the home boys. “Silent Sam” Jankovich once again came through in great style to lead the scoring with 16 markers. Hammond, Danilov, and Gibson scored 10, 8, and 6 points respectively to finish the bulk of the scoring. The Steelers had a 17-6 lead in the first quarter, and the second team continued the attack in the second quarter running it up to 28-10. With the first team in action in the third period the score was 41-15. Coach Lewis emptied the bench in the final period as Farrell won 55-27. Bradford 27, Farrell 50:—At the expense of Bradford High School, the Steelers rolled on to their third straight’ triumph by a handy score of 50-27. Sam Jankovich again dominated the scoring column as he swished 22 points through the nets. Johnny Hammond ably assisted him with 10 points. This game saw the Steelers start off comparatively slow but gathering momentum as the quarters rolled by. They led 10-6 at the first quarter and scored 10 more in the second while holding the “Owls” to 4. The Steelers scored 10 more in the third quarter to lead 30-16 at that point. The final quarter saw Farrell really open up as they went on to a 50-27 victory. Varsity Basketball New Kensington 29, Farrell 30:—The Lewismen were pressed hard all the way in registering their fourth straight win by a hard-fighting team from New Kensington 30-29. The steelers had a 6-0 lead in the first quarter but New Kensington came roaring back in the second period to knot the count at 15-15 at halftime. Wiith Hammond leading the way, Farrell forged ahead at the end of the third period 22-21. Early in the fourth quarter Farrell actually won the game by sinking 6 straight points. They managed to stave off a closing minute rally by the downstaters to win 30 -29. Hammond’s 12 points were high for Farrell. Har-Brac 26, Farrell 60:—Sam Jankovich and John Hammond combined to pace a blistering offensive attack as the Steelers easily subdued the Har-Brac quintet 60-26. Sam had 21 points and Johnny 17. The Steelers defense was airtight and allowed Har-Brac only 6 field goals. Hammond started the torrid Farrell attack by dumping in 8 straight points as Farrell took a 20-8 lead in the first quarter. The score was increased to 33-16 at the half-way mark. The barrage was continued in the last half with the score 43-20 at the third quarter mark and finally 60-26. Oonora 21, Farrell 60:—A majestic version of the 1947-48 Farrell High “Passers” showed signs of becoming one af the highest scoring quintets in the history of our school as they continued their sizzling pace by humbling Donora 60-21 on the home court. “Jumping Johnny” Hammond again copped high scoring honors with 22 points to lead the Steelers to victory. Three other starters crashed the double digit column in this game. Gus Guerino and Paul Danilov registering 11 points and Sam Janko-ovich 10. An outstanding feature of the game was again a tight zone defense which allowed the “Dragons” only 7 field goals. The score by quarters was 14-6, 29-10, 50-14, and 60-21. Duquesne 25, Farrell 49:—Farrell really hit top form after an amazing 49-25 triumph over highly touted Duquesne High School. Farrell took complete mastery of the game by jumping off to a 8-4 lead in the first quarter. Although the “Dukes” had a decided height advantage, the Steelers led by Paul Danilov were complete masters of the bankboards. At halftime the scoreboard showed Farrell ahead 21-9. The teams battled on even terms in the third period with both teams scoring 9 points to make the score 30-18. With 3 minutes remaining, the score stood 35-23. The final score stood at 51-20. Ambridge 33, Farrell 50:—Getting off to an early lead the Steelers easily trimmed Ambridge High School 50-33. Led by Hammond, who scored 21 points and Jankovich 13, the Steelers raced off to a 17-8 lead at the first quarter. The second period was played on even terms and the score read 26-18 in Farrell’s favor at halftime. Again in the third quarter the team played on even terms with Farrell maintaining their lead at a 36-27 score. In the final period Farrell pulled away from Ambridge and won 50-33. Varsity Basketball Beaver Fall 27, Farrell 45:—Beaver Falls provided the stiffest test of the still young WPIAL for Farrell, but were easily subdued 45-27 to give Farrell an early lead in Section III. Flashing the same consistent form which carried them to 10 consecutive victories, the Lewismen completely outclassed their Beaver Valley opponents. The victory was wrapped up by the impressive sharpshooting of Farrell’s one-two punch Hammond and Jankovich. “Jumping Johnny” had 16 and “Silent Sam” 14. Captain Rudy James turned in his usual remarkable floor game. Farrell drew first blood and were ahead at the first quarter 10-4. Continuing into the second period they ran the score to 22-11. The Steeler's machine gun offense opened up in the third period to increase the margin to 36-19. In a hectic final period Farrell’s second team managed to battle on even terms with the Tigers to end the game with the score standing 45-27. Aliquippa 51, Farrell 39:—In an acid test of Farrell’s power, the hometown lads faltered as Aliquippa defeated them 51-39. With the referees calling them close, Hammond and Danilov had to be benched as early as the second quarter. With the Aliquippa hoopsters seldom missing and getting hotter as the game went on, Farrell was knocked out of the undefeated column in league play. The “Indians” outscored Farrell 10-7 in the first canto. The score at halftime stood at 20-16 Aliquippa. At this point Aliquippa surged ahead to outscore Farrell 13-8 in the third quarter. The downstaters continued the mastery of the floor in the final period, to win by a neat score of 51-39. Captain Rudy James led the Farrell scoring with 10 markers. New Castle 56, Farrell 54:—Lady Luck was absent for the Steelers again in this game as they went down to their second straight loss 56-54 at the hands of Ne-Ca-Hi. After trailing all the way, the underrated New Castle team came through in the final minutes of the game to win. From the opening gun it was evident that a hectic battle was in offering with New Castle repeatedly catching up to Farrell. The Steelers had a 14-11 lead at the first quarter and left the floor at halftime leading 27-24. Both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter to make the score 49-37. The last quarter saw Sharon playing consistent ball to win 42-36. “Jumping Johnny” Hammond scored 16 points to lead the scoring. Midland 28, Farrell 39:—Regaining some of their finesse which enabled them to win 10 straight games, Farrell snapped a three game losing streak at the expense of Midland High 39-28 in a non-league tilt. Sam Jankovich had 12 points while Ham-mand and Danilov registered 11 points each to lead the Steelers. Playing a steady brand of ball the Steelers went ahead 10-8 at the first quarter then 20-11 at the end of the second. The score stood at 29-15 at the end of the third period. The Farrell lads won easily 39-28. Ellwood City 35, Farrell 52:—After a slow start the Steelers began to roll in the second quarter and went on to score a 52-35 triumph over Ellwood City. With the Farrell offensive guns hitting the cord with old time accuracy, the Wolverines were overwhelmed. After a slow start the Steelers and Wolverines battled on just about even terms with Farrell leading 21-17 at halftime. The third quarter saw Farrell lead 38-24 at the end of that period. With the second string in action Farrell coasted on to win 52-35. Hammond paced the offensive attack with 18 points, with Jankovick scoring 11 points; James, 10 points, and Danilov, 10 points. Varsity Basketball Ambridge 26, Farrell 44:—Still surging forward on their comeback trail the Farrell Steelers continued in the thick of the Section III WPIAL title race by easily trimming Ambridge High 44-26 in a slow moving game on the Farrell Court. Farrell’s one-two scoring punch clicking in old form once again was too much for the Bridgers. “Jumping Johnny” had 16 markers and “Dead Eye Sam” had 15 in the course of the evening. The first quarter showed Farrell with a slim 6-3 lead. The Lewismen came to life in the second quarter to score 19 points. The Steelers continued on to win handily 44-26. Beaver Falls 27, Farrell 38:—The Steelers seemed to have shaken the slump which for a while had threatened to knock them entirely out of the Section III with a 38-27 triumph over Beaver Falls. The Steelers unleashed a terrific flury of points in the third quarter which made them look like the Steelers of old. Farrell led 10-8 at the first quarter, 17-13 at the half, 32-17 at the third quarter and 38-27 in the final quarter. Guerino put on a long shot exhibition to lead the scoring with 12 points. Jankovich added 11 points. Aliquippa 39, Farrell 37:—The most exciting game of the season saw Farrell go down to a 39-37 defeat at the hands of the potential Section III champions, Aliquippa. The capacity crowd at the Farrell gym saw the Steelers score 16 points in the final period and come within 2 points of victory. The near story book finish was sparked by “Silent Sam” and Captain Rudy James, who along with the rest of the Steeler quintet played magnificent ball. Aliquippa led 7-5 and 16-12 at the first and second quarters ending. Aliquippa sewed up the game with a 16 point splurge in the third period. The final period, which will never be forgotten by those who witnessed the action, saw the Steelers score 14 points in less than 3 minutes, but Farrell lost 39-37. New Castle 48, Farrell 58:—Revenge was sweet for Coach Tudor Lewis and his stalwarts as they avenged an earlier season loss to New Castle with an impressive 58-48 victory. Flashing their best offensive form since the pre-season games, the Steelers had a comparatively easy night. The offensive attack hit full stride when the Steelers connected for 23 points in the second period. The shining light in the game was Sophomore Joseph DeLise’s 17 points, which tied Sam Jankovich’s for high scoring honors. New Castle led 11-6 at the first quarter. Farrell’s best offensive quarter of the season netted 23 in the second period. The Steelers led 47-31 at the third quarter and finished the game ahead, 58-48. Sharon 28, Farrell 35:—The Farrell High Steelers rang down the curtain on their most successful season since joining the WPIAL by trouncing Sharon 35-27 before a jam packed house at Farrell. This victory avenged an earlier season defeat and placed Farrell in second place in the Section. Farrell never was in real trouble after the first period, which ended with Farrell ahead 6-5. At the half, Farrell led 12-9. Since Sharon couldn’t penetrate the Farrell defense, they resorted to long shots with deadly accuracy, but still Farrell remained on top 21-15 at the end of the third period. Farrell opened the final period with a blaze of points then settled down to win impressively, 35-27. All five starting seniors ended the season and their careers at Farrell in a blaze of glory.
