From a vast lifeless looking court, the gymnasium turned into a buzzing, thriving little metropolis of students seeking ex-eicise and relaxation during school hours. The activity started when the boys took possession of the hardwoods the first period, and then every odd session during the day, while the girls filled in the even gaps. The program planned for the boys in gymnastics is a well rounded routine scheduled according to the seasons. It began as the school year opened with outdoor work such as calisthenics and “touchy” tootball. As cold weather forced the participants indoors, basketball, apparatus work such as exercises on the horizontal bars, parallel bars, and the horses, and rope climbing were the events concentrated on. Regular weekly tests were given to tne hoys to help them keep on their toes in every respect. An interesting diversion of this class work was a foul shooting contest among everyone taking physical education. The contest which is based on a competitive system was set about to determine the boy with the most accurate shooting eye. The girls' physical education program is devoted to sessions of volleyball, basketball, calisthenics, and various other recreational diversions of physical participation. From these classes have emerged basketball teams representing each of the senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman groups who competed in the inter-class tournament. An exhibition of the fundamental events that have been achieved in gymnasium classes during the 1944-1945 school term was presented the third and the fourth days of May under the supervision of Mrs. Helen Rebel and Mr. Joseph Tommins, physical education instructors. Military marching drills and apparatus work made up part of the display of form, while interesting features were the girls’ tap dance and the boys' “Men in Silver.” The value of our physical education department was truly shown in this exhibition. Rose Facko SENIORS Class History With our four years of high school at an end, we, the Class of 1945, can look back on them with mnrp fond memories than any other class. First the year when we were freshmen. Ah! that was the year. We were the upperclassmen and we held the upper hand. W’e published and distributed our newspaper the Inkspot, which incidentally was named by one of the members of our class, John Harakal. Then we had our radio station JRHS over which we gave special programs and announcements. We had special assemblies, movies and puppet shows. To end this happy year, we held our annual prom and presented our commencement pageant. Upon receipt of our diplomas, we were ready to enter senior high school. Next was our Sophomore year. It was difficult at first to be underclassmen, but with endurance and determination we made it a successful year. Under our class advisor, Mr. Angelo Grande, we elected our class officers, Norman Cheeks, president, Raymond Zickar, vice president, and Rose Facko, secretary. We took advantage of all the opportunities the school had to off or. We participated in its social and sport events. Through the aid of our class advisor and officers, we had a party. During the 1943-1944 school year, we were Juniors. We made this another successful year. First w'ith the guidance of our class advisor, Miss Julia S. Wallace, we elected our officers: president, Bernard Wachter, vice president, Robert Sherwood, and secretary, Rose Facko. Then our series of events started. As our Junior year was drawing to a close, we were rushed into a number of activities: the Homecoming Dance, the Gym Exhbibition with the crowning of Laura Jean Johnston as May Queen, and the annual Junior-Senior prom at which time we decorated the gym making it have the atmosphere of a night club. We did our utmost to make the seniors’ last social event their most memorable one. At the Farewell Assembly, our class was presented with the cap and gown by the Senior Class President James Kaikis. At that time we pledged always to uphold the ideals and the traditions of our school. I Then the year of years—our Senior Year. Wc started right in with the aid and guidance of our class advisor. Miss Esther Zentz, to elect our class officers, colors, flower, and motto. We elected Bernard Wachter, president, William Amos, vice president, and Rose Facko, secretary. Our class colors are navy blue and white, our flower is the white gardenia, and our motto is “Forward, our watchword; our goal, perfection.” This year, we were offered more subjects. We were behind our football, basketball, and wrestling teams with full and earnest appreciation. We started our social events by having a Junior-Senior dance which we called the Harvest Dance. Then we had a series of cage dances which took place after our basketball games played at home. Arrangements for these dances were made by the Hi-Y boys. Another feature of these dances was the canteen held under the stage in the lunchroom, and for each dance members of a particular group or club were in charge. Music for these dances was provided by the old reliable juke box. Another social event was a Senior Party which was strictly for seniors. Besides social activities, we were active in the 6th War Loan, we purchased bonds and stamps, and we took part in salvage campaigns. We published The 1945 Reflector. During the year, many of our Senior boys left to serve our country in the various branches of the armed services. Steve Kacerski, who enlisted in the Navy, was the first member of our class to leave for the service. With the curtain drawing to a close oui senior year, we attended our last social event, the Junior-Senior Prom. On Class Day we bade farewell to our beloved Alma Mater, teachers, and classmates. Dressed in our Caps and Gowns, we attended the services on May 20, 1945, and the Commencement Exercises on May 22, 1945. Now the curtain is fully drawn on our high school days, and we leave our school with due respect and honor, only to look back upon it with greater appreciation than ever before. With us, we take the treasured memories that we will never forget. Class of 1945 Class Officers BERNARD WACHTER Academic Course. Class President. Prom Committee. Hand. Hi-Y. I-atin Club. DAY Head Coach of Football Director of Athletics SEPTEMBER 8 ERIE ACADEMY 12-7 Showing an aggressive group of determined participants, the Farrell High Night Riders started their 1944 Season with a fine showing against Erie Academy although the final whistle blew with Farrell on the wrong end of a 12-7 score. The contest was very close with the Night Riders’ sixteen first downs to the visitors’ eight, but due to fumbles and errors, they were unable to make the best of their opportunities. The locals took the initiative in the opening quarter and tallied after an extended drive, putting them in the lead 7-0. Coming hack in the second canto, the Erie team retaliated with a long run into the six point markers. The tide of the battle now leaned toward the visitors as they marched down the field to complete their twelve point total for the evening. A Farrell fumble and intercepted pass in the second half of the game aided in the downfall of the Night Riders and threatened to build the Erie score up, but the lakeside boys lacked the power to go over. SEPTEMBER 15 ELLWOOD CITY 39-7 When the Night Riders invaded the Ellwood City Stadium, they found themselves against a team entirely different from the one they had defeated a year before. The opposition had changed to the T formation. Power plus deception netted the Ellwood City Eleven a total of 37 points. The Farrell team, having difficulty in cracking the forward wall of the pre-season favorites, took to the air, and a pass into the end zone' found a receiver in William Basilone, who tallied for the lone score. Our first WPIAL defeat had been handed to us with the count of 39-7. Ellwood City, undefeated in regular season play, was eliminated only by Donora in the Season Championship Game at the Pitt Stadium for the top WPIAL Honors. SEPTEMBER 22 MEADVILLE 7-33 Exhibiting a more flashy type of football, the Night Riders displayed their offensive power and rode the inflated pigskin to the payoff stripe on five occasions. During the course of the game, the foot of Captain Cheeks came through with three conversions. Unleashing an all out attack, the Farrell boys were hard to stop in plunges, sweeps, and passes. Mcadvillc, who refused to be trampled on, scored on a pass that cut our lead to 33-7. Since it was the first victory of the season, it set optimists dreaming. SEPTEMBER 30 SHARPSVILLE 6-26 A T Formation that did not click resulted in the downfall of a strong Sharps ville team, when the highly touted Night Riders led by Ronnie Prezioso charged their way to a 26-6 win. Good backing plus broken field running put Farrell in the lead 12-0 as the mid period gun went off. During the next stanza, the Night Riders out-scored the Sharpsville Eleven 14-6. Passes paved the way for the Farrell counters, while our valley opponents netted their six points as a result of a drive sparked by Frankie Erme in the fourth quarter. As the game progressed, the Blue Devils threatened our goal only to be stopped on the one foot line as the game ended. Sharpsville won the District Ten, Class A Championship and were defeated only by Farrell and Sharon during the season. The 1944 Football Season OCTOBER 6 ERIE STRONG VINCENT 13-27 Since both teams played wide open football with long runs and completed passes, the Farrell-Strong Vincent game proved to be exciting and hard fought. With a score in the first period, the Night Riders started to jump to an early lead. A second counter came two plays after Callahan intercepted a pass and carried it to our own twrenty-five. Strong Vincent’s team played rugged ball throughout the game, and on two occasions, the Erie team found themselves on pay dirt. The Night Riders came back with their two additional touchdowns as a result of long runs by Prezioso and Smith, and passes by the combination, to make the final score 27-13. OCTOBER 13 NEW CASTLE 7-14 With Ronnie Prezioso spearheading the oITensive, the Farrell High team smashed a 14-7 win over the New Castle Hurricanes. The Night Riders dominated the play of the first half during which time they earned two touchdowns and two conversions. The first few minutes of play found Farrell on a drive that was to take them sixty-two yards to a seven point marker. In the second quarter, they again went over the goal as a result of a pass. When the half began, the Red Hurricanes threatened the Farrell score as their hot breath beamed on the ever nearing uprights. New Castle was successful in crossing the goal only once after an intercepted Farrell pas3 was returned from the Night Rider eighteen to their own forty-eight where they started their drive to pay dirt. During the remainder of the game, Farrell prevented New Castle from reaching the zero mark, The score remained 14-7. OCTOBER 20 YOUNGSTOWN SOUTH 13-0 On a rainy, cold night, a smooth clicking team from Youngstown South tallied Farrell’s third defeat by a score of 13-0. Unable to make yardage on the ground, the Night Riders took to the air but in vain. Both teams threatened the goal, but they could not quite cross the last chalk mark. Due to injuries, Prezioso failed to enter the game. Gargano remained on the bench until Jack Monaco, substitute quarterback, broke his ankle then Gargano entered the line up. The South line was powerful although they failed to do much damage because of the difficulty of gaining ground. The teams attempted to play football with the weather playing havoc on both sides. OCTOBER 27 SHARON 0-6 Reaching the climax of the season, and of many of the players’ careers in high school football, the Night Riders rode on the Sharon field with all the spirit and agres-siveness possible in a high school team. In an equally important game to Sharon, a battle royal prevailed throughout the entire game. The first and only touchdown came in the first period after an extensive drive down when Maurice Phillips took the pigskin across the bitterly defended goal line. From this time on, the affair was a spectacle of clean hard-fought football. Good punting by Sharon kept Farrell in their own territory most of the time. A Farrell fumble on their near goal aroused fans, who with their hearts in their throats, watched Farrell recover a Sharon fumble after one play. Sharon’s T had been stopped. It was a well-rounded fighting team that carried away a victory from Sharon by a score of 6-0. The Shenango Valley Championship was won by a truly deserving team. The defeat for Sharon was their first of the season and took them from the perch of the favorites. The 1944 Football Season NOVEMBER 3 BRADDOCK 19-7 The Farrell High Eleven suffered an honorable defeat at the hands of a heavy Braddock team. Rolling up twice as many first downs as their down state opponents, the home town boys saw their downfall in passes as two intercepted aeriels resulted in two touchdowns for the Braddock Bulldogs. Long punts set up the scores in the first quarter, kept Farrell in their own territory and made it possible for the 13-0 score at the half. In the second half, a sustained drive with plays bombarding the Braddock line netted a touchdown for the Night Riders. Going into the fourth quarter, Farrell controlled the ball with twenty yards to go for a score. A penalty set them back and Braddock took over, carrying the pigskin down the field for their third touchdown. The contest was a trying one for the Night Riders because they were pitted against a team averaging 217 pounds in weight, the heaviest opponents of the year. Although a forty-five yard pass by Smith to Phillips was completed, it failed to bring results. The final score was Braddock 19, Farrell 7. NOVEMBER 10 ROCHESTER 7-7 With a spurt of enthusiasm, the Night Riders took the offensive during the first quarter of the Rochester game. After an exchange of possessing the ball, the Farrell team hit the line until a fifty-two yard run by Smith resulted in a touchdown. The conversion was made by rushing. The conditions were reversed in the second canto when the Rochester Rams tied the score, 7-7. The Night Riders threatened twice during the remainder of the game, but they could not quite reach their destination. A heart-breaking moment for Farrell fans came when a touchdown was ruled out as a result of the backfield being in motion. Although it was a hard fought game, neither team could reach their peak of offensive power because of a soggy field. This was the last game of the season. Football Season Seeking new fields to conquer, the Farrell team enrolled in the WPIAL. Under the guidance of Coach Day and the leadership of Captain Norman Cheeks, the Night Riders gained recognition in the fact that they scored five hundred percent in their first season of league competition, winning and losing two games and tying one. During the season that was to follow, the team’s lack of confidence turned to agres-siveness and their immaturity turned to determination as they upheld the honor of Farrell High School not only in the extent of games won and lost, but in a sense of the spirit in which the sport was taken. Football Camp Many prospective athletes and the few returning lettermen enjoyed the second annual football camp at the Great Lakes Camp for boys. The players were under the supervision of Coach Day, Assistant Coaches Paulekas, Snyder, Bonadio, and Manager of Athletics Dresch. After arriving at the Lake Erie Resort, the boys were stationed at their quarters and then the long, hard practice schedule was started. Although the work was gruelling, the food was good, and there were many facilities for relaxation and refreshment. Nearby movies and music also contributed to the squads’ entertainment. The time was soon up and the newly organized teams ended their stay at the camp where they received much experience playing against the local Erie teams. Ending the developing period, the teams returned to their own gridiron with a better understanding of football, a truer realization of physical conditioning, and a sense of comradship that would prove to be priceless in later life. Many of the participants will soon be wearing the colors of the varsity, while almost all of them were conditioned for a long career of football for their Alma Mater. As our school is becoming more and more sport conscious, a good deal of interest has been shown in reserve competition. October 12—At Campbell, Ohio October 18—Sharon ............ October 27—At Greenville .... November 1—Sharpsville ....... Varsity Basketball Oil City 24, Farrell 29:—The opening tilt for the Farrell Steelers found them with a battle on their hands as they defeated an Oil City quintet in an overtime period. The Oilers held the initiative and lead during the first three quarters, but the Steelers came back from an 18-11 score to run up their counters 18 markers in a quarter and three extra minutes. The Farrellites exhibited impressive defensive piay while the late offensive was a sight to behold. Sixteen points were turned in by three Farrell substitutes, Cannone, Basilone, and Dyll. Meadville 26, Farrell 45:—James Smith paced a smooth looking Farrell team with twenty-four counters as they won their game against Meadville. The Steelers had little trouble, using thirteen players during the course of the game. The score by quarters was 16-5, 28-17, 42-24, 45-26. Rayen 22, Farrell 36:—A powerful onslaught by the Steelers against Rayen High School of Youngstown, Ohio, gave them an early lead and built up their score to a comfortable margin. Seven substitutes gained experience while they were used extensively during the final session. Smith of Farrell took scoring honors with seven goals, and Taba-chino was high for Rayen with seven points. Warren 20, Farrell 40:—As the result of a fast game, the Warren. Ohio five found themselves on the wrong end of a 40-20 score, before they had an opportunity to settle down. Points were steadily poured in by the Steeler outfit who used their reserve strength freely. Eighteen points were credited to Smith. Callahan made an impression on the fans as he netted a few spectacular shots, adding ten points to the Farrell score. Akron Kenmorc 27, Farrell 34:—The Farrell High Gymnasium was the stage for a close, hard fought battle when a strong Akron Kenmore outfit traveled here for their tilt with the locals. The zone defenses of both teams were effective, but the Farrellites soon got the range and ran up the score to 8-2 in the first period. Akron trailed throughout the game but came very close during the final stages until Callahan came through to pull his teammates from the danger zone. Hess of Akron Kenmore menaced the Steelers with a one hand shot that netted him six goals. COACH TUDOR LEWIS Bradford 30, Farrell 34:—Playing without the services of their Coach Tudor Lewis, the Steelers set back Bradford High School 34-30. During the first half of play, the players throve on intercepted passes which enabled them to outscore the Owls 22-13. Because the latter part of the game was somewhat tougher, scoring became closer. With Callahan sparking the play, the boys came through with their sixth straight win of the season. Coach Snyder directed the boys in the game. New Brighton 21, Farrell 39:—The first WP1AL game played by the Pioneer Farrell team was a decisive victory over New Brighton. Getting hot at the opening whistle, the Steelers remained that way throughout the game to almost double their opponents’ score. Callahan succeeded in ringing the bell from the floor a half dozen times, while the best part of the scoring was almost equally divided by the first team. New Castle 20, Farrell 22:—As Jimmie Smith hit the net in the last ten seconds of the game, Farrell edged out New Castle 22-20. Defensive play was close since both teams had trouble finding their mark on the small floor. The scoring was close throughout the game, with many shots under the basket missing their objective. The win was the Steelers’ eighth, two of them being WPIAL contests. Varsity Basketball Ambridge 22, Farrell 47:—The atmosphere was tense as a pair of undefeated teams in two league starts met at the Farrell court. The Ambridge five lived up to expectations during the first few minutes of the contest but were completely subdued by the Steelers as the hand moved around the clock. A well balanced attack was used by Farrell, with fast breaks, a prominent factor in the scoring. Hammond’s play under the hoop netted him eleven points, during the course of the evening, for high scoring honors. Ellwood City 26, Farrell 39:—Our encounter at EUwood City exemplifies the rugged type of play used by the Ellwood quintet. After adjusting themeselves to the court, the Steelers held a decided edge over their rivals, although the game was the type that could have gone either way. The Steelers were forced to battle their way to the end of the fourth stanza despite the earmarks of the score 39 to 26. Aliquippa 24, Farrell 35:—Coach Lewis’s Steelers marked up their fifth straight WPIAL opponent when they trounced Aliquippa 35 to 24. The game, played on the downstate hardwoods, proved to be one sided during the first half with Farrell running up a 25 to 8 score. From the middle of the third period to the end of the game, the locals, sporting their second team, were unable to chalk up a mark, while the boys from Aliquippa ran their score up to 24. Smith and Hammond led the individual scoring with eleven and ten points, respectively. Beaver Falls 25, Farrell 26:—The Beaver Falls Tigers strove doggedly to carry off a victory, but they were turned back by the undiminished spirit of the Farrell team, band, students and fans. The battle, on the local hardwood, w’as witnessed by a capacity crowd who saw Farrell trail throughout the game only to nose out the rugged Beaver Falls five in the last fifty seconds by one point. Frankie Cannone was the sparkplug that kept the Blue and Gold fighting while Smith and LaCamera zipped eleven and eight points, respectively. Sharon 42, Farrell 31:—In the traditional Farrell-Sharon game, Sharon ruled the roost as they decisioned the Steelers in their owrn coop to the tune of 42 to 31 score. The Tigers were decidedly on, as they poured in fifteen goals and twelve fouls, against Farrell’s thirteen goals and five free throws. The opening canto was begun close—the second proving likewise, until Sharon gradually pulled away in score, throughout the game. Nemetz and Butchko paved the way for the Orange and Black win, while Smith and Hammond paced the scoring for Farrell. Youngstown South 26, Farrell 28:—A man to man type of defense by the South team held the Farrell offensive in check and kept the Blue and Gold on the lower end of the score for the majority of the game. A spurt of fight and enthusiasm enabled the Steelers to surpass the Youngstow’n City League favorites and edge them out by two points. The final stages of the game had the fans on their feet and the wdnner was kept in doubt, until the last second. The battle was not a league game, but intense playing prevailed throughout. New Brighton 29, Farrell 35:—Exhibiting a spirited brand of basketball, the Farrell five, behind in points and floor play, smashed through with six points during the last three minutes of loop play, extended the playing period and added six more points to overcome the New Brighton quintet 35-29. The game was close although the initiative wras carried by the New’ Brighton boys during the majority of the tilt. The Steelers came through with the chips dow’n as their few followers, at the opponents’ gym, cheered them on to their fourteenth victory of the season. Smith carried aw’ay ten points, while the local boys made their shots count during the last stages of the game and the overtime session. Varsity Basketball New Castle 39, Farrell 40:—A fighting team from Farrell, who refused to accept defeat from a determined Ne-Ca-Hi quintet came out in front after an exciting overtime period. Trailing throughout the name, the local quintet came back in typical Steeler style to tie up the ball game and extend the playing time an extra three minutes, when LaCamera’s field goal put another game in our victory basket. The Farrell-ites were given trouble by a push shot used successfully by the New Castle opponents. Cannone’s aggressive playing was oustanding, while Smith received scoring honors, and Norman Cheeks was given credit for a very timely foul which evened the score 38 to 38, before the final whistle of the contest. Ambridge 36, Farrell 39:—Traveling to Ambridge, the Steelers captured their sixteenth run in seventeen starts, as they downed a spirited Rubenstein outfit. The downstate five led after the first period, but were set back as the Steelers outrode them 18 to 10 before the half time was completed. Throughout the remainder of the encounter, Farrell held a lead but could not feel completely smug, as the ever improving Ambridge aggregation strove to take the decision. Jimmy Smith, aided by a strong support by his teammates, racked up twenty points for a grand total of the evening. A 39 to 36 score is symbolic of the type of basketball played. Ellwood City 22, Farrell 38:—Adding another marker on their victory list, the Farrell High Steelers strengthened their lead on the top notch position in the league, by subduing Ellwood City 38-22. Starting close, the breach in the scoring broadened as the Lewis five got their sea legs. The visitors had trouble finding the hoop and many “sure shots” did not travel via the net. Dougherty was a tower of strength for the Ellwoodcrs, marking up fourteen points, while Hammond and Smith shared two dozen, equally. Aliquippa 29, Farrell 45:—The first place Farrell High Steelers turned back the Aliquippa Caters by a 45 to 29 margin after a close first half. The play of the first two quarters was slow, and the Farrellites were outscored 16 to 14. The rest period turned the Steelers up a notch, and it was a different team that overwhelmed the downstate opponents by a flurry of thirty-one points to the visitors’ thirteen during the last stanzas. The Lewismen had turned in their eighteenth win of the season. Be ver Falls 48, Farrell 45:—Before three thousand fans in the Beaver Falls gym, the Tigers edged out a 48-45 victory over the Farrell Steelers. The game seemed to go beserk, and countless fouls were called on both sides. The Beaver Falls quintet carried a lead that was made possible by accurate foul shooting and the close up shots put in by Williford and Kennedy, throughout the contest. The final canto was a scene of unparalleled excitement, when the Steelers, behind 45-33, in the last three minutes added a spurt of spirit that came within two points of upsetting the Tigers. The final whistle cut the spree short and James was called out on the floor to shoot a foul which he put in, making the 48-45 score. The defeat for Farrell deadlocked them with Beaver Falls and Sharon for the Section III title. The Steelers outscored the Beaver Falls five from the floor by a ratio of 16-13 goals, while they were outscored on fouls 22-14. Hammond was high for Farrell with all the players contributing to the score. Sharon 46, Farrell 32:—With cool deliberate play, the Sharon High Tigers succeeded in subduing a fighting quintet from Farrell before a capacity crowd on the city hardwoods. With Nemetz of Sharon setting up the plays, Koss, Yarzab and Butchko tallied thirty-nine of the Tiger points on fast cutting shots. Our rivals to the North kept the top spot during the contest although the Steelers got “hot” during the third quarter, when Cannone, Smith and LaCamera added quick successions of fouls and goals to trim the Tiger lead to four points. The Orange and Black then continued with their starting pace and the end of the fourth quarter saw them ahead 46-32. The Farrell scoring went Cannone 8, Callahan and Smith 7, LaCamera 6, and Hammond 4. The defeat for the Lewismen eliminated them from the trio of the leading teams in the Section III title race and concluded their cage session.
