To the Class of 1944 You, the Class of 1944 of the Farrell High School, have fulfilled an obligation to your home, your school, your community and your country. Our greatest leaders in the fields of education, military science and government have concurred whole- heartedly in their appeal to all young people that the most valuable service they can render their country today is to remain in school until such time as they graduate or are called into the armed forces. The youth of Farrell have heeded that advice- to a most commendable extent, and because you have done so in an area. Where, economic inducements right now are especially tempting, you have merited the acclaim of state and national leaders. And I, too, want to take this opportunity to express to you my congratulations and my appreciation. You, the members of our 1944 graduating class, have rendered that service, and I know that at times you havle done so heroically and beyond the regular call of duty. But as I compliment, I also challenge you. During these past few years there were doubtless many occasions when it would have been easy for you to have cast aside your high school career, to have disca1'ded it as one sheds an outworn garment, to have shirked your obligations, and to have denied your service to your country. You can recall problems, both trifling and large, discouragement in the face of counter attractions, and a general restlessness, but you individually were stronger than any of these. You went on performing your tasks and have now emerged the victor. I am proud of you. I charge you, therefore, to go forth as leaders of your fellow undergraduates, admonishing them likewise, to remain in school and to apply them- selves to the total of their talents, for their own personal growth and for the enrich- ment of the state. None of us is certain what this world will be like when peace comes, but we all know that never in the world's history will the need of leadership have been so great. You and the classmates of your generation will have to assume that leader- ship, and now is the time, and here the place to begin. May' you find joy and happi- ness in a job well done. CARROLL D. KEARNS, Superintendent of Schools.
