To the Class of 1944 You, the Class of 1944 of the Farrell High School, have fulfilled an obligation to your home, your school, your community and your country. Our greatest leaders in the fields of education, military science and government have concurred whole- heartedly in their appeal to all young people that the most valuable service they can render their country today is to remain in school until such time as they graduate or are called into the armed forces. The youth of Farrell have heeded that advice- to a most commendable extent, and because you have done so in an area. Where, economic inducements right now are especially tempting, you have merited the acclaim of state and national leaders. And I, too, want to take this opportunity to express to you my congratulations and my appreciation. You, the members of our 1944 graduating class, have rendered that service, and I know that at times you havle done so heroically and beyond the regular call of duty. But as I compliment, I also challenge you. During these past few years there were doubtless many occasions when it would have been easy for you to have cast aside your high school career, to have disca1'ded it as one sheds an outworn garment, to have shirked your obligations, and to have denied your service to your country. You can recall problems, both trifling and large, discouragement in the face of counter attractions, and a general restlessness, but you individually were stronger than any of these. You went on performing your tasks and have now emerged the victor. I am proud of you. I charge you, therefore, to go forth as leaders of your fellow undergraduates, admonishing them likewise, to remain in school and to apply them- selves to the total of their talents, for their own personal growth and for the enrich- ment of the state. None of us is certain what this world will be like when peace comes, but we all know that never in the world's history will the need of leadership have been so great. You and the classmates of your generation will have to assume that leader- ship, and now is the time, and here the place to begin. May' you find joy and happi- ness in a job well done. CARROLL D. KEARNS, Superintendent of Schools. CARROLL D. KEARNS SUPERINTENDENT OF FARRELL SCHOOLS B. A., University of Chicago, B. S., Westminster College, M. M., Chicago Musical College, M. Ed., Urliversity of Pittsburgh W. R. ANDERSON PRINCIPAL FARRELL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL A. B., Grove City College, M. Ed., University of Pittsburgh J To the Class of 1944 This is an occasion in your life which will stand as a momentous one. You have reached a turning point. If you have made the most of your opportunities, you will be well prepared for the new adventure. We do know that a new adventure is before you. Many have gone before you. They have faced the new adventures and have succeeded. Your adventure may be somewhat difficult. It will present greater opportunities, more risks, and a realiza- tion that you can serve your country. - The fact that you have come so far in this adventure indicates that you have persevered. You have that something which urges you forward, which makes you apply your talents, and which helps you to master difficult hurdles. If you continue to persevere, to master and to solve difficult problems, success will be yours, regardless of the road which you may travel. May yours be a successful and happy adventure. W. R. ANDERSON. The Music Department The music program in the Farrell Schools has been organized as a twelve-year progressive sequence, wherein every pupil is provided an opportunity to develop and to express his individual talents, technical skills, and interests, to the fullest measure of personal enrichment and growth. All pupils are taught to recognize and to appreciate the artistry of our musical heritage and all share in the creation and rendition of com- munal music activities. But those who care to participate further, in a more specialized way, are afforded the pos- sibility of doing so by qualifying for placement, from last chair position or obscure vocalist in the most elementary of the large aggregations of band, orchestra, or chorus, to that of instrumental or vocal soloist in the most advanced groups, or as a featured artist in a concert presentation. The choral program in the first three grades centers JAMES W. DUNLOP about the elimination of the non-singing child and unison Director of Music class room singing. Two-part work is begun in the fourth grade and three-part in the sixth. Throughout the elemen- tary grades the teachers strive for tone quality and artistic interpretation as well as technical perfection in performance. Each of the seventh and eighth grades have mixed choruses, while the ninth year offers a girls' chorus. Both boys and girls of' the ninth grade, however, are eligible to qualify for membership in the senior mixed chorus, which is made up of ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth year pupils. A girls' trio, girls' ensemble, mixed quartette and mixed ensemble provide advanced selection. The instrumental program begins with rhythm bands in all of the first and second grades. Tonettes are introduced in the third grade. Individual and class instrumental instruction begins in the fourth grade and continues through the twelfth. A junior orchestra and a senior orchestra enable all pupils who are qualified to par- ticipate instrumentally in an orchestral unit. A junior band, a senior marching band and a senior concert band are organizations toward which every pupil looks with pride and every instrumentalist strives for membership. The senior bands and the smaller choral units are much in demand for com- munity and social service activities and they accept a limited number of these out of school invitations. The band plays regularly for athletic contests and makes a few out of the city appearances. Both the band and the orchestra play throughout the' year for school rallies, seasonal programs, plays, class night, commencement and assembly. All of the music groups take part in the school radio programs. The elementary grades present a music festival each spring and the senior organizations offer an annual spring concert, which occasionally is augmented by a junior choir or an instru- mental group. In addition, it has been the practice to invite a county, a district or a state organization to hold their festival in Farrell and thus enable the entire student body to broaden their cultural experiences by practicing in a concrete way the princi- ples instilled in them throughout their years of music education. Last year, the All- State Band Festival was held in Farrell and this spring the District Chorus Festival was presented here. A Schools and the Wor Effort Schools can and must cooperate with and participate in the War Effort. Since this, and let there be no doubt about it, is a total war, every man, woman, and child must play his part. JOHN HETRA Assistant Principal A. B., Westminster College M. Ed., University of Pittsburgh There are numerous ways in which the schools can contribute to the War Cause directly and indirect- ly. The first and most important duty of the boys and girls in school to this crucial emergency is to remain in school. As great as the need is for manpower to provide the tools of war, both on the farm and in the Iactory, the need for remaining in school is very important. Our school leaders have ac- cepted the challenge of this urgency and have done everything possible to keep boys and girls in school. Special preparatory courses have been insti- tuted and the existing curriculum has been expanded and stressed for a di- rect usefulness. Particular emphasis has been placed on character, health, mathematics, and the sciences, with- out in any way minimizing or de- emphasizing the other curricular values. The all out objective of such subject planning is not only for im- mediate war usefulness, but for post war preparation of each individual. Well trained students will make for a better and easier reconversion of our economy after peace has been won. Wars must be paid for, and in addition to taxes a very large amount of money must be raised through the sale of War Bonds and Stamps. Students during these campaigns, as in many other things, have played an important part in two ways: First, they have purchased bonds and stamps, second, they have carried the vital message to their homes. As in the bond drives, so, too, in scrap collections, students contributed materially. Boys, representing Victory Corps, Hi-Y, Boy Scouts, and so forth, gave of their time and their services to make the collection of very important and necessary salvage materials such as paper, tin, glass, rags, and metals possible. Some students have given much to the war effort, some contributed less.. However, small or large their contribution, either through physical or academic prep- aration, or through donation of services, and the purchase of bonds and stamps, their reward and usefulness are in proportion to their intentions and capacity to acquire and give. Unwanted as any war is, this emergency has tested the fibre of all students. It has been a laboratory for testing school loyalty, civil pride, home responsibility, and above all one's loyalty and patriotism for his country and the flag. It has not been necessary to bring the war to the schools, the schools, the boys and girls, the teachers and the administration went out to meet the war through an all out preparation and generous contribution of services. The schools are happy that the Challenge has been met. The Schools are proud of the very substantial response of their boys and girls. Vocational Industrial Training The year 1943-1944 brought to Farrell High School a much needed addition to the curriculum. Through the tireless efforts of our Superintendent, Mr. Carroll D. Kearns, equipment was secured and a program was set-up to enable the boys of this school to prepare themselves to take skilled jobs in industry after graduation. The boys taking this work spend one half their school time in the shops, receiving trade informa- tion and instruction in methods and technique-s of the operations of work in their particular shop. During this time, they are under the guidance of a teacher who has been selected be- cause of outstanding proficiency in his field. The remainder of the boys' time in school is devoted to the pur- suit of studies which are necessary to the success in the shop. These studies, as much as possible, relate to the shop which the students are taking. Such subjects as: Related Mathematics, Related Science, Re- lated Drawing, English, Civics and In- dustrial History are emphasized for the boys taking the course. A large part of the tools and equipment used in the shops has been secured from the State and Federal HAROLD J- PECK Government. This equipment is the Vocational Director same type and size as that used by industry so that the student will be able to take his place in industry with a minimum of re-training after graduation. In order to give the students coming to high school an opportunity to become acquainted with shop work, a General Shop is in operation at the Junior High School Building. Boys in the seventh and the eighth grades are required to take work in this shop. A Wood Shop has been installed in the high school for boys who do not wish to spend the majority of their time in a shop. The instructors in shop work are as follows: Mr. W. W. Wise, Electric Appili- ance Shopg Mr. E. E. McClearn, Machine Shop, Mr. H. G. Read, Sheet Metal Shopg Mr. A. M. Kilbert, Wood Shopg and Mr. August Miller, General Shop. Defense classes have been held in the shops and classrooms since last spring. Many men and women have taken advantage of free instruction in these courses. These classes are taught by Mr. Leon Avril, Mr. Adam Stey, and Mr. A. M. Tohir. The Vocational-Industrial Program is under the direction of Mr. H. J. Peck, formerly of Midland, Pennsylvania. Mr. Peck is a graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Tech- nology in Engineering and received his Masters Degree in Education from the Univer- sity of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In addition to several years in industry, Mr. Peck has spent ten years in Vocational Education in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, and Mid- land, Pennsylvania. 'Ol ,u-5 Faculty MRS. That day has come, for it is now the year 1944 and we have just graduated, bringing to a close the most memorable years of our life. We were an active group in our Freshman year, for we participated in all events that were open to us. There were assemblies, paper drives to purchase our movie projector, football and basketball games, the Recognition Day Program, and the annual Prom. We also published for the first time the successful Ink Spot. Under the supervision of Miss Edna Short, now a captain in the Women's Army Corps, we organized and elected our class officers. Richard Trombacco was elected president, James Russo, vice presidentg and Noreen Komar, secretary. The grand climax was our commencement pageant, Youth Stands Watch, which was written by members of our class. When the school year 1941-42 came, we were officially proclaimed Sophomores. No longer were we the gay and carefree students of the junior high school-we were now the shy underclassmen of the senior high school, determined more than ever to make a place for ourselves in this glorious institution. We soon became accustomed to the various adjustments, to the new pattern of schooling, and our own choice of curriculum. We were issued lockers of our own. New and graver responsibilities were placed upon our shoulders. With the loyalty of our own fellow classmen and the personal assurance of the Juniors and the Seniors, we followed all rules explicitly. Miss Anne Gojdics served as our class advisor. Joseph Pratt was our class president, Russell Williams, vice president, and Gwendolyn Esaias, secretary. During the 1942-43 school year, we were Juniors! This proved to be a more eventful and exciting year. With the able cooperation of our class advisor, Miss Julia S. Wallace, and our class officers: James Kaikis, James Ru-sso, and June Shaffer, we enjoyed more activities and joined more organizations. We welcomed the All- State Band to our school and honored them with a tour of the building and a get- acquainted party. Our pep sessions became livelier with the increasing accomplish- ments of our football and basketball teams which were awarded high honors. At the close of the Junior year, we were rushed into a bevy of activities. We very proudly feted the Seniors at the annual Junior-Senior Prom and made their last social event a memorable one. At the Farewell Assembly, our class president ac- cepted the cap and gown from the Senior Class President, Robert Trombacco. We vowed at that time to uphold forever the ideals of our school. Our honor students formed the Honor Guard and the Honor Arch at the Baccalaureate and the Commence- ment exercises, in tribute to the departing Seniors. At last 1943-44, the long awaited Senior Year! How eagerly we had approached this year and yet, as the days went by, our thoughts of leaving became more regret- ful. The cloud of war figured prominently, as never before, this year affecting not only the student body but also the members of our faculty. A whirlpool of activities sprang up-the Homecoming Dance, the Mid-Year Prom honoring those boys leaving for service before the second semester, war loan drives, scrap drives, assemblies, and the District Chorus. Our wrestling team and our high school band held the limelight this year. Miss Esther Zentz was our class advisor. James Kaikis, Jerry Tallarico, and June Shaffer served as our class officers, president, vice president, and secretary. respectively. Our Senior year was soon drawing to an end. On May 22, 1944, we received our yearbook, The Reflector, which set a new record in sales never reached previously. lNe were then fetcd by the Junior Class at the annual Prom. On Class Day, we impressively bade farewell to our beloved Alma Mater. Solemnly attired in our Caps and Gowns, symbolic of the graduating class, we attended the Baccalaureate services on May 21, 1944 and the Commencement Exercises on May 23, 1944. We proudly accepted our diplomas with due honor and went forth in the world prepared to serve our Country. LEWIS ANTHONY PAULEKAS RALPH E. DRESCH Secretary-Treasurer Football Coaches ANTHONY PAULEKAS LEE ROY P. DAY VAUGHN WAGNER Assistant Football Head Coach of Football Assistant Football Coach Director of Athletics Coach 1943 Football Season Under the guidance of Coach Day, the Farrell Night Riders started their pre- season training period of ten days at the Great Lakes Camp for Boys on Lake Erie, Pennsylvania. This was the first football camp in the history of Farrell. From the standpoint of sanitation, beauty, and facilities, the camp is rated as the finest on Lake Erie. Entertainment for the boys consisted of special movies, boating, swim- ming, and music provided by Francis Patt. Practice games were also played with Strong Vincent High of Erie and other nearby teams. The camp proved to be a great morale builder and in the following years will become an annual event. With green and inexperienced players and only a few veterans, Coach Day and his assist- ants tackled the tough 1943 schedule. SEPTEMBER 10, 1943 GREENVILLE SCORE 26-0 Under the brilliant captaincy of Louis Zickar, the Night Riders made an impres- sive showing in the opening game against Greenville. Held scoreless in the first stanza, the Blue and Gold tallied twice in the second quarter and once in the third and the fourth quarters. Greenville's only break came when Denniston and Boliver brought the leather to Farrell's 29. With only this threat, Farrell came through with flying colors with a score of 26-O. SEPTEMBER 17, 1943 ELLWOOD CITY , SCORE 7-0 Farrell's second game against a strong and rugged Ellwood City eleven ended in a close victory for the Night Riders. The only score of the game came in the fourth period when Zickar tossed a high pass to Ronald Prezioso who brought it down on the Ellwood City fifteen yard line. Safetyman Tatmilas caught Prezioso just as he heaved the pigskin to Russell Phillips who carried it to the two yard line. Captain Zickar plunged through right tackle to tally the only score and C'heek's boot added one point to make the score 7-0. This victory was a second straight for Farrell and it was the first defeat of the season suffered by Ellwood City. SEPTEMBER 24. 1943 MEADVILLE SCORE 35-0 On a wet and slippery field at the Meadville Stadium, the Night Riders continued their powerful drives to score over Meadville High Bulldogs, 35-0. Taking the open- ing kickoff, Farrell marched eighty yards for their first touchdown, added another and a safety in the second, and pushed over two more in the third quarter, winding up with a final tally in the last period. Touchdowns were credited to Zickar, Owens, and Christello with the linesmen playing a beautiful game. The Night Riders rolled to their third victory and the third game in which they kept their opponents scoreless. l943 Football Season OCTOBER 1, 1943 SIHARPSVILLE SCORE 12-0 Farrell went into the lead in the inter-valley high school football series by de- feating the Sharpsville eleven, 12-0 at their own stadium. This victory marked up the fourth straight for the Night Riders. Big Chief Owens scored the first six- pointer in the second period. A brilliant forty yard dash by Patsy Christello in the third quarter decided the ball game. Sharpsville's opportunity came when Jennings recovered a fumble on Farrell's 22, but no ground was gained and Farrell took over. The entire Farrell line functioned well with Prezioso, Christello, and Owens consistent ground gainers. OCTOBER 8, 1943 NEW CASTLE SCORE 7-20 Before a crowd of 11,000 fans at the Taggert Stadium, the Red Hurricane downed the Blue and Gold to win 20-7. Farrell's only touchdown came when Paglia intercepted a pass and plunged over for a surprising six pointer in the third quarter. New Castle's victorious scores were made in the first and third cantos. Coach Hank Day's boys put up a hard fight even after the New Castle boys took the lead. Far- rell's outstanding strategical play brought them the same number of first downs as the Hurricanes possessed and more yardage gain by passing and rushing. OCTOBER 16, 1943 AKRON-KENM-ORE SCORE 13-0 Farrell Night Riders unleashed a powerful attack to roll over Akron-Kenmore, 13-0, and climbed back on the victory road before a rain-drenched crowd. James Smith. a hard driving, shifty fullback, spearheaded the Night Rider attack. He tal- lied the opening touchdown on a two yard plunge, culminating an eighty yard march, and it was his running that placed the ball in position to score the second six pointer, a minute before the game ended. It was Christello who plunged over for the last goal. Cheeks added a point to the score by a good placement. OCTOBER 22, 1943 OIL CITY SCORE 32-0 Farrell Hlgh,S grid team performed faultlessly to defeat a highly touted Oil City eleven 32-0. The victory proved to be a costly one as Captain Louis Zickar, back- field star, was injured on the first play of the game and remained out of action the remainder of the season. The game was Farrell's Homecoming tilt, but it was mar- red by rain. James Smith made the first tally midway of the first quarter. Cheeks missed the extra point try. Prezioso opened the second canto with a plunge over from the 195 Cheeks converted. Boatner in the same period went over on a reverse and Cheeks made the extra point. Christello in the third canto went over from the 16. Cheeks missed the try. Then in the last quarter, Smith ran seventy yards for the final touchdown. Christello failed for the extra point. OCTOBER 29, 1943 SHARON SCORE 7-13 Before a record crowd of 12,000 fans, the raging, clawing Sharon Tigers rose to defeat the great Night Riders 7-13 at the Sharon Stadium. A new, tricky eight man defense line set the stage for the Farrell loss. Gargano recovered a fumble on the Night Rider 33. Fullback James Smith spearheaded thefxttack, and the Night Riders marched seventy-seven yards to score. Then Smith carried the ball in suc- cessive plays to the Sharon twenty-five, from there he went over to tally in the first quarter. Cheek's placement split the uprights. Sharon then tallied in the second quarter and tied the score. They then went to the front in the third quarter. The remainder of the game was a see-saw affair. The Night Riders seriously felt the loss of their Captain Louis Zickar injured the week before. Samuel Miletta was act- ing captain. With only Tizio and Geuss of 'last year's first stringers in the starting lineup, the Steelers were slow in warming to their task. Geuss and Speizer were high scorers for this first victory. Coach Tudor Lewis tried out all of the boys on the squad while he was planning and building a fast combina- tion. Oil City 23, Farrell 21:-In a rip-roaring battle, Oil City's veteran quintet handed Farrell High a 23-21 defeat. Callahan, filling in for Geuss at for- ward, kept the ball rolling fast. With three minutes to play Kaletka arched in a long fielder and added a foul to make it 20-18. A foul and goal for the Oilers set them ahead 23-18. Tizio then put in three fouls to make the final score 23-21. Calla- han's three field-ers gave him scoring honors for COACH TUDOR LEWIS Farrell. Beaver Falls 37, Farrell 39:-In a sensational neck and neck battle witnessed by approximately 1,000 fans at the Farrell High gymnasium, the Steelers downed a mighty Beaver Falls five 39-37. The last quarter was particularly thrilling with the lead see-sawing until the last second. Beaver Falls was ahead 32-31 until Tizio in- tercepted a pass and dropped in an easy two-pointer to put the Steelers ahead 33-32. Although Beaver Falls tallied a goal seconds later, the Steelers quickly tallied two field goals, Geuss hitting from under the hoop and Kaletka from the center to take a 37-34 lead with a minute remaining. Beaver Falls caged a field goal to cut the mar- gin to 37-36, but again Geuss dribbled in for an easy set-up shot and Beaver Falls added a lone foul shot to make the final score 39-37. Jackie Geuss was spearhead of the Steeler offensive with 9 field goals and two fouls for 20 points. Woodrow Wilson 36, Farrell 26:-Farrell, fresh from an impressive win over Beaver Falls, battled dramatically with the Youngstown Woodrow Wilson High for the first three periods but their offense simply collapsed in the fourth quarter for a loss of 36 to 26. The lead see-sawed back and forth during the first three cantos until the fast and furious playing of the Youngstowners in the fourth quarter brought them a neat victory. Speizer and Cheeks with six points apiece were high for the Blue and Gold. New Castle 26, Farrell 33:-The Steelers handed the New Castle Hurricanes their first defeat, a 33-26 taking on the Farrell High court. The Steelers started out in a businesslike method and it was soon evident that New Castle was in for a tough evening. The score at the end of the first canto was 9-11 and at the half ses- sion 20-15 with Farrell on top. Geuss led the Farrell scorers with 12 points and was followed up by Tizio with 9. Greenville 25, Farrell 27:-A field goal by Jack Geuss in the last three seconds of play gave Farrell High a 27-25 victory over a smooth Greenville High quintet. Just as the clock showed a minute to go, Greenville registered a goal to make the score 25-23. With 30 seconds to go, Kaletka fired from deep court and it was 25-25. It was then that Geuss dribbled to the right of the basket and let it fire to make the final score 27-25. Cheeks carried off scoring honors with 10 points and Geuss next with 8. Warren 33, Farrell 22:-In their game with Warren, Ohio, the Steelers suffered their third defeat by a score of 33-22. Despite the fact that Warren had the great advantage of height, Farrell kept on plugging their way into the fourth canto, but it was to no avail. Tizio and Kaletka shared honors for high scores with five points apiece. Varsity Basketball Grove City 32, Farrell 27:-Driving hard in the last two sessions of play, Grove City High school defeated Farrell High 32-27 at the Eagle Court. Farrell enjoyed its best scoring offensive in the first quarter play and outscored Grove City from the field, tallying 13 doubledeckers to the Eagles' 12. Five players scored with Philip Tizio leading with 10 points. Hickory 11, Farrell 26:-Farrell High Steelers hit the victory trail again by handing Hickory High Hornets a decisive 26-11 trimming on the Hickory High Court. Coach Lewis emptied his bench in the fourth quarter and still the Steelers continued to show their superiority. Callahan, Tizio, and La Camera notched the fielders for Farrell. Sharpsville 33, Farrell 23:-Sharpsville High Blue Devils pulled the surprise of the season in handing the Farrell High Steelers a 33-23 defeat on the Farrell High Court before a crowd of 2,000 The score was a tie 4-4 at the close of the first canto and 13-7 at the half session. The visitors continued their terrific pace until the final whistle. Tizio led the Steelers with four buckets. Rayen 20, Farrell 42:-In a slow contest Farrell Cagers handed Rayen High of Youngstown a decisive 42-20 defeat on the Farrell High court. Using a quick break- ing offensive which completely upset the man for man defense of the visitors. the Steelers, after a slow start, piled in the field goals. Before the game was over, Coach Lewis used every man on the squad. Tizio, Geuss and Callahan set the pace for the Steelers with 13, 10 and 9 points, respectively. South 40, Farrell 27:-The Steelers suffered their sixth loss at the hands of South High school, 40-27 at the Youngstown South Field House. The Steelers stayed in the contest and pressed South throughout the first half of play. However, in the second half, South turned on the power to win. Geuss was high with nine points, while Tizio followed with eight. Sharon 37, Farrell 20:-In the Sharon-Farrell game at the Sharon High gym, before a capacity crowd of 1,300 fans, the powerful Sharon Tigers handed Farrell their seventh defeat. Sharon penetrated the Farrell defense for close-range buckets which gave them a lead of 21-11 at the half. They stretched this margin to 24-11 in the third period. The Steelers fought back Valiantly but ended on the short end of the score which was 37-20. Cheeks topped Farrell with six, while Flickinger and Butchko led the Tigers scoring with nine points each. The contest was a real battle with both teams playing excellent and smooth ball. Mereer 19, Farrell 42-Playing a fast game of ball, the Steelers won their seventh victory by handing Mercer a 42-19 lacing. Farrell's promising ability to hit the hoop from deep court set them at a great advantage. At the end of the third quarter, Coach Tudor Lewis was enabled to use every man on the squad. Eleven players scored with Boatner and Callahan leading with three baskets each. Hickory 15, Farrell 35-In their second victory over the Hickory Hornets, the Farrell High Steelers led all the way for a score of 35-15. Although Coach Tudor Lewis used many substitutes, the Hickory boys could make little headway. Herbert Speizer led the point making parade with four field goals and four fouls for a total of twelve points. Sharpsville 32, Farrell 21--Farrell High Cagers were handed their second defeat from Sharpsville this season on the Sharpsville High floor by a score of 32-21. Al- though the Steelers were trailing early in the second quarter, Coach Tudor Dewis substituted a team composed of underclassmen who are expected to carry the colors of the Blue and Gold next season. Both clubs played strong defensive games. Far- rell's scoring was divided, but Cannone and Cheeks led the parade with four points apiece. Varsity Basketball Bradford 15, Farrell 27-A highly rated Bradford quintet came to Farrell with the hope of adding the Steelers to their list of victories, but the accurate shooting and fine defense of the Steelers brought defeat to the Bradford cagers, by a 27-15 score. While 'Farrell led most of the way, it was not until the third quarter that the Steelers acquired a lead. Boatner held scoring honors with ten points while Speizer 'followed with eight. Mercer 22, Farrell 19-Scoring the biggest upset recorded during the current cage campaign, Mercer High defeated Farrell, 22-19 before a capacity crowd at the Mustang gym. The contest was a battle all the way with Mercer holding the Steelers to two foul conversions in the final quarter to triumph. LaCamera topped the scor- ing with five points. Greenville 24, Farrell 29-In their second game with Greenville, the Steelers won an easier victory compared to the first tilt. The score was 5-4 at the close of the first period and the lead see-sawed until Farrell assumed an 8-7 margin and from there on stayed in front of the Trojans until the final whistle. The final score was 29-24 with nineteen points made by Captain Phil Tizio. Bradford 46, Farrell 25-On February 19, Farrell suffered another defeat at the hands of Bradford at Bradford. Farrell had previously defeated Bradford on their own court. At the end of the first canto, the Steelers had the lead of 11-9, but at the half-way mark, Bradford hit the lead with 28 points to our 15 points. Bradford continued its fine playing and held the lead until the final whistle when the score was 46-25. Captain Tizio led the scoring parade with thirteen points. Sharon 34, Farrell 23-In a thrilling cage tilt, the powerful Sharon Tigers defeated a fighting Farrell High Quintet 34-23. Coach Tudor Lewis used a little strategy to break the Sharon progress by playing Tizio and Boatner in back court when the Tigers took the offensive. But Flickinger made up this set back by tallying four goals in the first period to bring the score to Sharon's lead of 12-6. The Steelers narrowed the Tiger's lead to 18-14 before the teams left the floor at intermission. Sharon opened the scoring in the third period and continued to tally until the period ended by a score of 27-19. The Steelers fought until the final Whistle when the score was 34-23. The victory was the second of the year for the Tigers over the Steelers. Philip Tizio held scoring honors with 15 points. Grove City 35, Farrell 34--Ending the season for both teams, Grove City handed Farrell a 35-34 defeat on the Farrell High floor, in as dramatic a finish as has been se-en on any district court this season. Many thrills were packed into the last thnee minutes of play. Tizio was double-fouled, making one and taking the other out of bounds. Boatner flipped in a field goal and Tizio also tossed in a two pointer to make the score 35-34 just as the clock turned red. Play was desperate in the final minute. When the final bell rang, both teams were fighting frantically for possession of the ball. Boatner was high scorer for the Steelers with fifteen points. This was the last game in which the five varsity seniors represented their Alma Mater. Junior Tri-Hi-Y During its first year at Farrell High School, the Junior Tri-Hi-Y organization has proved worthy of praise. The members of this organization have attempted to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and the community high standards of Christian character, through united service, Christian fellowship, and self improve- ment. One of the main projects undertaken this year was the sponsoring of the Junior Red Cross Drive which en1'olled each home room in this building as a member. This campaign proved to be a great success. The members of the Tri-Hi-Y participated actively in sports, mainly basketball, and later took part in a tournament. Programs which proved to be instructive as well as entertaining were given at each meeting. All activities and campaigns were met with splendid cooperation by each and every member. The officers of the Junior Tri-Hi-Y are Phyllis Williams, presidentg Virginia Monteson, vice presidentg Nancy Metz, secretary, and Lois Steibly, treasurer. Miss Helen Grimes is the advisor. Junior Hi-Y Club To create, maintain, and extend, throughout the school and the community, high standards of Christian character is the purpose of the Junior Hi-Y Club. After Mr. George Dvoryak was granted a leave of absence, Mr. Steve Marin was selected as advisor of the club. He assumed his duties during the first semester. The following officers were elected: Raymond Bechtold, presidentg Robert Moder, vice president: David Vermeire, secretary, William Anderson, treasurer. In the past, the club has been a great asset to the war effort. The members have conducted many house to house campaigns soliciting paper, glass, tin, and other scrap materials. They have collected many vital materials and made large contributions to the American Red Cross and the Farrell Civilian Defense. A benefit moving picture was sponsored by the club and the entire proceeds was turned over to the Civilian De- fense for air raid equipment. This year, the members have aided as collectors in the citywide scrap metal, pa- per, and glass collection-campaigns. It has also been a policy with the members to promote the sale of war bonds and stamps, and to buy them themselves. Le Cercle Francais Vive La France was adopted as the motto of Le Cercle Francais for the dura- tion of World War II. During this crucial period in the history of the French nation, the club members have endeavored not only to preserve a keen interest in things French, but also to stimulate a renewed interest in France and in the study of the lan- guage of diplomacy. Some programs stressed the fact that France has given to the world some of its most noted scientists and several of its greatest scientific discoveries. OFFICE ASSISTANTS Twenty-two girls in this school devote one period or more a day to office work. These girls range from sophomores to seniors. The girls serve as assistants to Miss Angeline Bonadic-, secretary to the principal, who instructs them in the fundamentals of office practice and gives them essential practical experience. There are usually two or three assistants on duty during each classroom period. They type forms, letters, and tests. These tests are duplicated by the girls on both the mimeograph and the ditto machines. The girls serve all those who come to the office and also receive telephone calls and messages. The office assistants are not an organized social club but are a group of girls who seek practical learning which will aid them when they seek business positions. During the second semester, Florence Bialko and Margaret Perrine served as assistant secretaries to the principal. The Night Rider Staff First Row: Miss Mary J.
