FARRELL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN WARTIME Our senior high school has made some adjustments so as to contribute as quickly as possible to the war effort. We have kept in mind the continuous growth of youth in addition to our provision for a youth participation in the war effort. Our home guidance program informs youth of the manpower needs of the nation as well as encourages them to choose wisely some phase of the war effort. Already, youth are contributing to the shortages in manpower. A survey shows that fifty per cent of our student body were employed full time and part time, while others were interested in part time employment. There has been a decided increase, this year, in the number of students who are enrolled in algebra, plane geometry, chemistry, and physics, courses which are basic to the war effort. Thirty per cent of our senior boys are enrolled in a war enriched course in physics which will give them a background preparatory for additional spe- cialization. It is from this group that officers will be drawn. Other senior boys are enrolled in advanced science and will receive training in the fundamentals of machines and electricity as outlined by the War Department. A small group of senior boys are taking a pre-fiight training course in aero- nautics. This group is small as the pre-requisites, mathematics, science, and physical fitness are rigid qualifications. This course is made up of topics which can be taught with limited equipment and by a teacher who has a background of science and mathe- matics. Fifty boys are enrolled in a course in cooking. They have shown a keen interest in the course and will have the opportunity to prepare foods in large quantities, learn the technique of the kitchen, plan suitable menus and learn the value of foods. This type of training will qualify these boys for cooks in various branches of the armed forces provided that they have the aptitude and the interest for this kind of work. A physical fitness program for boys covering a study of the Soldicr's Handbook of Basic Field Training, Swedish free exercise drills, instruction in tumbling, light calisthenic drills, military marching, parallel bar drills and exercises, horizontal bar drills, leather horse drills and recreational games such as basketball, soccer, volley ball, table tennis is in operation. Our wartime program has many other general features which apply to all mem- bers of the student body, such as first aid in all health classes, a school lunch program, a continuous campaign to collect scrap, military drill for the Victory Corps and em- phasis on the sale of war stamps. Space does not permit, nor do I have the insight to relate what our school will be doing six months from now to aid the war effort. We shall, however, do our best with the equipment, the teaching staff and the student body to go all out for the war effort. W. R. ANDERSON
