NNIVERSARY OF ADMIRAL FARRAGUTS BIRTH His wife, Susan, died in 1840, ieaving no chiidren. He was commissioned to the post of command- er in Septemher of 1841. in 1843 he 'marriedvirginia Loyo11 and they had one son. During the Mexican War, Farragut commanded the Saratoga . Farragut advanced hy usual steps through theroutine of the service and in 1841 was promoted to the rank of commander. 1n a few years he was made captain and piaced in charge of Mare Island Navy Yard in San Francisco Bay. At the outbreak of the War of Secession, Farragut's friends in the South urged him to take up the cause of the Confederacy, but he offered his services to the Union cause. At Washington he was soon piaced in command of the Gulf Squadron, with orders to unite with Porter in the capture of New Qrieansr On April 24, Farragut passed the forts under a heavy tire, and with the 1oss of hut one ship, completely defeated the Confederate iieet of fifteen vessels. The city surrendered two days later. The rank of rear admiral was created for him by Congress. He was nicknamed the Old Salamander because he seemed immune to the enemy's tire. In 1864 Farragut took command of a Heet to capture Mohiie. In this hattie he destroyed the enemyys ships and occupied the forts. This engagement marked the end of his active service. In 1867 Farragut made a trip to Europe on a ship placed at his disposal by the government and he was received with acclaim in the ports of many iands. On his return he retired to private iife. Farra- gut died at Portsmouth, New Hampshire on August 14, 1870.
