THE THEME In planning our yearbook we chose a nautical theme because we felt it a fitting tribute to America's greatest naval commander-Admiral David Glasgow Farragut-for whom our school is named. At ten years of age he went into active service on the frigate Essex whose history was one of the most exciting during the War of 1812. After this heroic initiation into the perils and terrors of war, it seems strange to think of Farragut going quietly to school. His character was one that showed his keen powers of observation, a strong sense of humor, an exuberance and enjoyment of life and an ability to extract the most out of every passing phase of his profession and expe- rience. It is hoped that in choosing Farragut as an underlying spirit in our nautical theme these qualities would serve as an ideal for our students to emulate. Then raise the gangplafnks, hoist the anchors and set the sails in our fleet-Directorship, Leadership, Fellowship and Sportsmanship. These sections illustrate the subjects indicating each division of our book. The theme page suggests the keeping of a log, particularly appropriate to the theme and title of the yearbook. Under Directorship we have our principal and faculty directing and steering our destiny during our high school life with an insight and experience that enables them to see farther than we can. As leaders in the major activities of the school, the graduates appear in the second division-Leadership. With a Heave, Ho, Lads, its a strong pull to shore, come the undergraduates, who with their fine spirit of cooperation and com- radeship made this annual possible-Fellowship. And, finally, the racing sailboats portray Sportsmanship--one trait usually developed through athletics, holding Farragut as one family, encouraging and cheering its teams and clubs on through stormy and calm weather to victory.

DEDICATIO In sincere appreciation of his earnest efforts to help students and teachers to weather successfully the perils on the sea of educatio-n during the last three troubled years, we gratefully dedicate this second edition of our Log, to our principal, Mr. Peter B. Ritzma. As pilot of the good ship Farragut, he has guided us through dangerous reefs, always, with his fine democratic spirit, insisting upon action which will be of benefit to all--an equal chance for everyone. The line spirit of cooperation and good will which dominates the Farragut faculty and student body is but the reflection of the human and sympa- thetic understanding of the needs and problems of this school and community possessed by our leader, Mr. Ritzma. There is true affection in the hearts of the graduates for their principal whom they leave with regret for he has steered the course for many of them through Junior and Senior high school. We hope that this dedication will convey to him our gratitude for his loyal and devoted Work in lifti-ng this school to a high standard of achievement. THE SENIOR CLASSES OF 1936. 5
