A GRADUATES DREAM Last night as I was sleeping, In a dream it came to me That I was sailing on a ship, A sailing out to sea. The ship was called the Farragut, The teachers were the crewg My classmates were the passengers Upon the ocean blue. I dreamed that I heard someone ask, Where are these youngsters bound, And when at last they reach the port What fame will they have found? The gallant ship went sailing on, Despite great storms at seag It sailed into fair harbors And safe at last were we. When I awoke, the sun shone bright, 'Twas Graduation Day! And as I donned my cap and gown The dream seemed far away. But as I said farewell to friends That dream came back to me, And it seemed to me, as in that dream, We were upon life's sea. I wished that we would safely sail To land at last and flnd That we had weathered all the storms And left failure far behind! -Shirley Elmer. 22
