May this record of our school life bring each one a glimpse of the hopes and ideals which have dominated us through pleasant and rough sailing in our year together, ending in calm joy. THE THEME In planning our yearbook we chose a nautical theme because we felt it a fitting tribute to America's greatest naval commander-Admiral David Glasgow Farragut-for whom our school is named. At ten years of age he went into active service on the frigate Essex whose history was one of the most exciting during the War of 1812. After this heroic initiation into the perils and terrors of war, it seems strange to think of Farragut going quietly to school. His character was one that showed his keen powers of observation, a strong sense of humor, an exuberance and enjoyment of life and an ability to extract the most out of every passing phase of his profession and expe- rience. It is hoped that in choosing Farragut as an underlying spirit in our nautical theme these qualities would serve as an ideal for our students to emulate. Then raise the gangplafnks, hoist the anchors and set the sails in our fleet-Directorship, Leadership, Fellowship and Sportsmanship. These sections illustrate the subjects indicating each division of our book. The theme page suggests the keeping of a log, particularly appropriate to the theme and title of the yearbook. Under Directorship we have our principal and faculty directing and steering our destiny during our high school life with an insight and experience that enables them to see farther than we can. As leaders in the major activities of the school, the graduates appear in the second division-Leadership. With a Heave, Ho, Lads, its a strong pull to shore, come the undergraduates, who with their fine spirit of cooperation and com- radeship made this annual possible-Fellowship. And, finally, the racing sailboats portray Sportsmanship--one trait usually developed through athletics, holding Farragut as one family, encouraging and cheering its teams and clubs on through stormy and calm weather to victory. Ritzma. As pilot of the good ship Farragut, he has guided us through dangerous reefs, always, with his fine democratic spirit, insisting upon action which will be of benefit to all--an equal chance for everyone. The line spirit of cooperation and good will which dominates the Farragut faculty and student body is but the reflection of the human and sympa- thetic understanding of the needs and problems of this school and community possessed by our leader, Mr. Ritzma. There is true affection in the hearts of the graduates for their principal whom they leave with regret for he has steered the course for many of them through Junior and Senior high school. We hope that this dedication will convey to him our gratitude for his loyal and devoted Work in lifti-ng this school to a high standard of achievement. A GRADUATES DREAM Last night as I was sleeping, In a dream it came to me That I was sailing on a ship, A sailing out to sea. The ship was called the Farragut, The teachers were the crewg My classmates were the passengers Upon the ocean blue. I dreamed that I heard someone ask, Where are these youngsters bound, And when at last they reach the port What fame will they have found? The gallant ship went sailing on, Despite great storms at seag It sailed into fair harbors And safe at last were we. When I awoke, the sun shone bright, 'Twas Graduation Day! And as I donned my cap and gown The dream seemed far away. But as I said farewell to friends That dream came back to me, And it seemed to me, as in that dream, We were upon life's sea. I wished that we would safely sail To land at last and flnd That we had weathered all the storms And left failure far behind! -Shirley Elmer. 22 ANNUAL STAFF 193 S - 3 6 Co-Editors Mathias Lieser John E. This 'year the Society held Panel Discussions and several social meetings with speakers from various colleges. One of the interesting topics considered in the Panel Discus- sions was Etiquette of By-Gone Days as Compared with Todayf' The male mem- bers of the Societies had very decided opinions on how the girls of today should dress and act. The pinnacle of success, however, was reached in April, 1936, when, with a personnel of 102 the Band played in the city finals and received a superior rating with three other schools. This made the Band eligible to compete in the finals in Cleveland. This is indeed a remarkable feat in itself and many old established high school bands vie for the honor of competing in the contest. The fact that Farragut is but a new high school and that the Ba-nd started from scratch, adds to its honor. The officers for the current year were: Captain and Director .,......., ..,. During the past year the Ba-nd Dances, Penny Socials, Rummage Sales, Card and Bunco Parties, and a Concert by its members were sources of revenue to carry on the good work of this club. The most noted of its achievements has been the sending of our band to Cleveland to compete in the National Band Contest. GIRL LIFE SAVERS There are now thirty-one girls who are enlisted in the life-saving class and a majority of them have already passed their life-saving examination. The more advanced mem- bers of the class are working on diving and a swimming marathon is in full progress. To those who are skilled enough to receive the stated amount of points, a bronze fish is awarded. During the past year several girls have earned their fish -Gladys Lonk, Helen Long, Evelyn Mulacek, Anne Ferlise, Estelle Adamczyk, and Angela Kraml. THE FANTASY Farragut's first Fantasy, sponsored by the Girls' Gym Department, Was held in April. About 300 students participated in this program which included specialty numbers, folk dances, and character dances. The Fantasy concerned the separation and joyful reunion of two fairy dolls, played by Mildred Formanek and Mildred Kadic. Other soloists were Evelyn Mulacek, Marya Omahen, Bernadine Spravka, Adeline Capitol, and Mary Pretnar. The highlights of the program, however, was the tango danced by six students-Ted Gradisek, Mildred Kadic, Hilary Kujawa, Mildred Formanek, Henry Puharik, and Marya Omahen. The colorful scenery painted by Miss Jacques's advanced art students added to the fairy atmosphere. VOLLEY BALL CHAMPS Not all the honors in athletics go to the boys. The girls of Room 226, a graduate division, were victors in the Captain Basketball, and in the Volley Ball tournaments. In each contest they played fine games, winning in the former by a score of 18-8 and in the latter 29-13. Each girl received a gold basketball for that victory and an F emblem for the Volley Ball. S6 SENIOR BASKETBALL TEAM The Farragut Senior Basketball Team won the city championship when it defeated Kelvyn Park, at Lane Tech, 23 to 21. It also won the University of Chicago Tourna- ment, and easily captured the Central Section. During the Christmas vacation, Farragut entered the U. of C. Tournament, and after playing three games, established themselves with Crane as favorites in the meet, with their superior play. Farragut conquered Crane 31 to 26, receiving a silver basketball trophy and each player a gold medal. As a result, Farragut was picked by the newspapers as the team to beat in the City League, and Farragut lived up to this. They went through their eight-game schedule without a defeat, and easily captured first place in the Central Section. They started by first trouncing Washburne 69 to 30 and beating New Phillips 24 to 18. They then took Tilden, Lindblom, Manley and Harrison, before traveling for an exhibition game with Morton. Farragut closed its regular season by easily defeating Kelly and Old Phillips. Entering the finals, when they won two thrillers from both Englewood and New Phillips in the playoffs, Farragut played before 2,000 people against Kelvyn Park, whom they beat 23 to 21. It was a thrilling game, which saw the Vikings win in the last minute to play and emerge as champs of the city. Farragut had the honor of playing in Elkhart, Indiana, because of winning the Stagg Tournament, and also participated in the State Tournament, where they were de- feated by Joliet's quintet. The team, coached by James Fox, was co-captained by Bill Tresnak and George Pelc. Especially fine playing was done by John Horgan and Lenard Yuknis, forwards, George Pelc, center, and Bill Biros and Bill Tresnak, guards. 57 5 -r R , 1- 5 Q fr Q M A uv 3 V 3 5, X X, v-I-nf wif J C5 H D Junior Basketball Team Football Team Boys, Swimming Team Baseball Team F Club Girl Lifesavers Girls' Leader Class G. The students write and edit the entire Scroll with the advice and assistance of Mrs. Mudra, faculty adviser. Although no major credit is given until the third semester, the students join the Staff for the enjoyment they receive in writing. Cub Reporters attempt to present an accurate account of the latest news of in- terest to the student body. In addition they write feature stories, campus chatter, jokes, and give a true record of the accomplishments of the various clubs and the entire student body. THE STAMP CLUB The Stamp Club meets every other Monday after school in Room 203, with Mrs. Mudra, faculty sponsor. This club has proved immensely interesting to young stamp collectors at Farragut.
