Farragut's first Latin Club, the S. P. F.-Senatus Populusque Farragutensis, was formed for the mutual joy and benefit of its Latin scholars. The classical note was introduced by the selection of a Roman pin and secret pass- word by which members of the club are able to identify each other. Furthermore, those who were nrst in organizing this club are regarded as charter members. Officers for the semester are: Cmzsul . . . .... Elinor Kusman Quaesior . . . , . . , Violet Pantlik Praetor... ,. .,....Leona Fiala Aecfiles . , . . .Vernon Haase, Joh-n Trepina 4 STAMP CLUB Although the Stamp Club is one of the newer clubs at Farragut, it has a membership of approximately forty. Its purpose is to further the interest in stamp collecting. The Stamp Club is novel in that each member looks up a certain stamp and discusses it thoroughly at every meeting, which is on Mondays after school in Room 212. Officers for this semester are: i President . . . ..,., . . Vernon Haase Vice President. , . ...... George Hruska Secretary Gladys johnson Treasurer . . .Nathaniel Hirschtick 19 ACTIVITIES ' ' STUDENT COUNCIL -- - ' One of the main student forces at Farragut is the Student Council. This influential bodyconsists of one representative, usually an honor student, from each division room. The most important business completed by the council this semester was the assem- bling of the Traffic Code and the Assembly Hall Code. It also assisted in the publication of the Farragut Log by promoting sales. In union there is strength is tfie old proverb depicted on the Council pins by means of an old Roman design. ' ' The oilicers are as follows: , President ,,....... .... ' .Evelyn Kozeny l Vice President .... .,...... J ohn. Trepina Secretary , . ,... , . .Blanche Budlovsky Treasurer . . , ..,.....,.,....,... .,..... J ohn Jezek CONCERT BAND When Farragut's Concert Band was organized two years ago, it was a comparatively small band having an enrollment of only thirty-five. Since then the membership has jumped to sixty-six. Next year Mr. Joseph Grill hopes to hit near the ninety mark. During the twd years that the Band participated in the City High School Band Contest it won first place in the Group II division. Later it had the honor of competing with large ninety-piece bands. The Band plays in all community affairs, at concerts every year, and at assemblies, parades and football games. BOYS' GLEE CLUB While the Boys' Glee Club is in session, enchanting melodies rise to a Crescendo and then softly die away in liquid tones. Early in September, 1934, when the club was established, the talent that gathered was very promising and with a little practice the boys were able to stand up against the keenest competition. On January 16, 1935, the boys participated in the City High School Contest at Orchestra Hall Where they were rated very highly. At a later date they sang in concert with the Boys' Chorus at Harrison. The officers of the club are: President ..,.,,... ..... C harles Behounek Vice President ..,.. .,.... R obert Hajek Secretary .....,. ,,.. J erry Chrastek Treasurer . . . .......,,......,...... ..... J ohn Sikora GIRLS' LEADER CLUB The Girls' Leader Club is composed of students who volunteer their services to help the Girls' Physical Education teachers during class periods. A Leader is distinguished by the orange uniform she wears, her excellency in Physical Education and her ability to handle a large group of girls on the gym floor. Besides doing her regular work, such as taking attendance and marking proficiency tests, a Leader also referees girls' basketball and volleyball games. SCROLL STAFF News, feature stories, and clicking typewriters form a suitable background for the industrious cub reporters who comprise the Farragut Scroll Staff. When it was decided to have a school paper early in February, 1934, this group quickly offered its services. Although no major credit is given in Journalism until the third semester, these students joined the Journalism classes for the fun of writing. J About seventy per cent of the pupils on the Scroll Staff are leaving because of grad- uation. - 20 THE PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION Not all high schools are as fortunate as Farragut in having a Parent-Teachers' Asso- ciation that is sincerely interested in the welfare of the school. During the past year the Association has had various activities to raise money for band uniformsg namely, the Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale, its annual play, Money Talks, and its Fathers' Night Program at which Judge Bicek of the Juvenile Court was the guest speaker. On March 29, the Chicago High School Spring Conference of Districts 23 and 24 was held at Farragut and over three hundred mothers and fathers attended. The P. T. A. meets the third Thursday of every month inviting the faculty to tea after school, thus providing an opportunity for the parents and teachers to become better acquainted. Quoting J. P. Munro, the P. T. A. has this purpose: It is our business to see to it, therefore, that the atmosphere and the education or educative influences of this vast present-day city of civilization are the very best, the very most efficient, the very most uplifting to boys and girls that it is possible for them to be. Each member devotes one study period a day in creating a fine library atmosphere and in attending to minor details which Miss Agnes Vetter, librarian, is too busy to take care of herself. Jack Layer was captain of the team. Especially Hne playing was done by Peter Smick- las, center, George Wido and Edward Kubes, forwards, and Ted Gradisek and Jack Layer, guards. CONCERT ORCHESTRA Last year the Farragut Concert Orchestra won Hrst place in the Group II division of the City High School Orchestra Contest. Beginning with thirty-Hvc members two years ago, the Orchestra has steadily in-- creased its size until it now numbers hfty-four members. Slavibor Dvorak was chosen concertmeister for this semester. The Orchestra plays at graduation, various community functions and assemblies. SENIOR GIRLS' GLEE CLUB Lovely soprano and alto voices blend harmoniously as the Farragut Girls' Glee Club meets. Organized in September, 1934, the club now his a membership of 150, fifty-two being in the Junior Girls' Glee Club. The girls having a little more experience in reading scales were placed in this group and the others equally anxious to sing, formed the Girls' Junior Division. In January, 1935, the club took part in the city High School Contest at Orchestra Hall and intends to participate again next year. The oflicers are: President' , . . . . . . . , . , .....
