The family Coat of Arms is the shield with the golden charger ' s shoe and nail emblazoned thereon. It originated with Don Pedre Farragut who was a knight with King James I of Aragon and who helped drive the Moors from Majorca and from Valencia. The eagle carrying the shield is taken from the sternpiece of the USS HARTFORD, which was Admiral Farragut ' s flagship carrying him to victory during all of his battles. The four gold stars represent the four ships which have thus far borne his name. Admiral Farragut is remembered for the famous quote at the bottom of the crest, which was spoken by him in the heat of battle at Mobile Bay during the Civil War. I SHIP ' S HISTORY The fourth ship to bear the name FARRAGUT, USS FARRAGUT (DDG-37) is the first of a modern class of missile destroyers. FARRAGUT was constructed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Quincy, Massachusetts, and was commissioned on 10 December 1960. After her first deployment to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, she was the first ship on the scene of Astronaut Scott Carpenter ' s splashdown in April 1962. FARRAGUT has made numerous deployments with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediter- ranean, including cruises in February 1964, May 1965, June 1966, February 1972, September 1975, January 1977, and July 1979. The ship made trips to Northern Europe in May 1967 and September 1975 and participated in the UNITAS XIII cruise to South America in 1973. FARRAGUT possesses the most up to date anti-air capability in the Navy ' s arsenal. Her main AAW armament is the TERRIER surface-to-air missile system. Her anti-surface armament consists of the HARPOON surface-to-surface missile system and a 5 54 rapid-fire gun. Anti-submarine capability consists of an ASROC launcher and two triple torpedo tubes. The weapons systems can be controlled individually or by means of the Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS), a computerized means of weapons direction and control. FARRAGUT participated in the Bicentennial Celebration in July 1976, joining hundreds of other sail and power vessels in a parade up New York Harbour. She served as host ship for the America ' s Cup Races in Newport, Rhode Island in September 1977. In May 1980, the ship took part in the celebration of Boston, Massachusetts 350th Birthday. FARRAGUT ' s most recent deployment includes service in the Mediterranean from March 1986 through September 1986. The deployment included patrol duty and gun ship duties off the coast of Libya during the tense days of March through April 1986. The ship ' s company was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for its service in the Mediterranean.
