BOOFIDA COMMANDING OFFICER Commander BOORDA entered the Navy as a Seaman Recruit in February 1956. Advancing to Petty Officer First Class he served in a number of aviation activities including Attack Squadron 144 and Airborne Early Warning Squadron ELEVEN. Commissioned an Ensign in 1962, CDR BOORDA served on USS PORTERFIELD QDD-6821, attended U'.S. Naval Destroyer School, and was Weapons Officer on USS JOHN R. CRAIG QDD-8851. He next was assigned as COMMANDING OFFICER, USS PARROT QMSC-1971. A tour as an instructor at Naval Destroyer School was followed by duty under instruction at the Naval War College lCommand and Staff Coursey and the University of Rhode Island. Upon completion of the course he served as Executive Officer, USS BROOK QDEG-U. A short tour at the University of Oklahoma was followed by assignment as Lieutenant Commander Assignment Officer in the Bureau of Naval Personnel and later as Assistant for Surface Captain Assignment. Commander Boorda has received the Navy Commenda- tion Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal 423, and various other campaign awards resulting from Vietnamese service. Serving as the Commanding Officer of the FARRAGUT from August 1975 through June 1977, CDR Boorda was instrumental in the transformation of the FARRAGUT from a good fighting ship to an excellent warship second to none. Commander Boorda is presently serving as Special Assistant to the Principal Deputy for the Assistant Secretary of the Navy! CHANGE OF COMMAND On June 30, 1977 in Valencia, Spain, the Command of the USS FARRAGUT left the hands of Commander Jeremy Michael Boorda and became the new responsibility of Commander Sanford N. Mock. All hands were present as well as CDR Boorda's wife Bettie. Dignitaries from the city of Valencia and Spanish military officials were guests of the Command. ' A Spanish Military brass band played both the Spanish and American National Anthems, followed by the Invocation, given by LCDR Philip Branan. As in all facets of life, responsibilities are continually changing hands and in the United States Navy the Captain of a warship is the major force behind it's performance.
